Japanese Americans Sent to Concentration Camps
This is a short about the internment of American citizens of Japanese descent by the government during World War II. It's both sad and ironic that the defeated Germans were convicted of crimes against humanity during the Nuremberg show trials for their internment of Jews during that very same war. The Japanese Camps in California World War II West Coast Camps for Japanese-Americans By Mark Weber In the months following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, many expected an immediate attack against the West Coast. Fear gripped the country and a wave of hysterical antipathy against the Japanese engulfed the Pacific Coast. The FBI quickly began rounding up any and all "suspicious" Japanese for internment. None was ever charged with any crime. Almost all were simply Japanese community leaders, Buddhist or Shinto priests, newspaper editors, language or Judo instructors, or labor organizers. The Japanese community leadership was liquidated in one quick operation. Men were taken away without notice. Most families knew nothing about why their men had suddenly disappeared, to where they were taken, or when they would be released. Some arrestees were soon let free, but most were secretly shipped to internment camps around the country. Some families learned what had happened to their men only several years later. The action also included the freezing of bank accounts, seizure of contraband, drastic limitation on travel, curfew and other severely restrictive measures. But this FBI ...

Being Japanese-American in Japan #7: "Why do you look like a Japanese?"
This is a question I most frequently get from young grade-schoolers, particularly if they haven't had much contact with other foreigners. Plus they often have a very limited view of the world outside their borders, which is understandable given their youth.

Lessons Learned: Japanese-American Internment During WWII
On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which began the process of interning Japanese-Americans due to the alleged threat they posed while the United States was at war with Japan. During the next four years, more than 100000 Japanese-Americans, most of them US citizens, would be removed from their homes, primarily along the Pacific coast, and relocated to inland camps. James M. Lindsay, CFR's senior vice president and director of studies, says the decision to intern many Japanese-Americans during the war demonstrates the difficulty of striking a balance between civil liberties and national security. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, he argues, the United States was again faced with difficult decisions over limits to civil liberties. Americans learned from the mistakes of World War II, he says, and the experiences of Japanese-American internees should serve as a reminder of the danger of allowing national security to trump civil liberty. This video is part of Lessons Learned, a series exploring historical events and examining their meaning in the context of foreign relations today: www.youtube.com For more information on Japanese-American Internment During WWII and other topics visit James M. The Constitution and the Camps - Due Process and the Japanese-American Internment by Matthew Shimura
This is a moving documentary that won CSPAN's 2012 Student Documentary Competition in which 9th student Matthew Shimura from Punahou School in Honolulu, HI detailed the plight of his grandfather and other Japanese citizens during World War II when the US government decided to suspend the constitutional rights of US citizens and declared Japanese Americans as C4 "enemy aliens" without due process. While many don't know it, it was not only Japanese citizens that were rounded up by the United States. Instead of hundreds of thousands of US citizens including Germans, Italians and political dissidents were also rounded up and hauled off to the concentration camps. Even worse is tens of thousands of American citizens who had their citizenship suspended, including women and children against which there was no evidence for the "enemy alien" designation, were held in the camps for years after the war had ended. Matthew warns that Americans need to fully understand the gravity of these events which are still clouded in mystery so we can be better prepared and possible try to prevent the government from even again deciding to suspend the inalienable rights the constitution is SUPPOSED to guarantee to us. Perhaps even more spine-tingling is recollections from Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye's who recalls how he was serving in the US military during the war and did not even have any knowledge that Americans were being rounded up into concentration camps because the news was censored by ...

1942-45 American-Japanese Relocation & the 442nd NEW FOOTAGE!
www.unknownww2incolor.tk http In March 1942, Lieutenant General John L. DeWitt, head of the Western Defense Command, issued the first of 108 military proclamations that resulted in the forced removal of more than 110000 people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast from their homes and to internment or relocation camps. In February 1, 1943, the US Government reversed its decision on Japanese Americans serving in the armed forces, and approved the formation of a Japanese American combat unit. A few days later, the government required that all internees answer loyalty questionnaires, which was used to register the Nisei (the first generation of Japanese origin to be born abroad) for the draft. Question 27 of the loyalty questionnaire asked males eligible to register for the draft, "Are you willing to serve in the armed forces of the United States on combat duty, wherever ordered?" while question 28 asked all internees, "Will you swear unqualified allegiance to the United States of America and faithfully defend the United States from any or all attack by foreign or domestic forces, and forswear any form of allegiance or obedience to the Japanese emperor, or any other foreign government, power or organization?" The 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, was an Asian American unit composed of mostly Japanese Americans who fought in Europe during the Second World War. The families of many of its soldiers were subject to internment. The 442nd was a self ...

I also discuss the fact that while my outward appearance is Japanese, on the inside, I am and always will be a foreigner in this country.
