John Ottman The Usual Suspects
"John astounds me with his seemingly endless ability to do anything. Not only does he constantly surprise me with his genius as a film editor, but he has invariably gone on to flabbergast all of us with his evocative and inspiring music." - Bryan Singer John Ottman's Thoughts_ Suspects was the film to throw tradition on its head, and I've tried to keep it that way ever since. From the way the score was recorded to the minuscule team I worked with, this film was testament to the argument that the cat can be skinned in many different ways to achieve the same goals. The scary part is that all the techniques I was attempting were pretty much uncharted territory. The doomsayers said it would never work. All I knew was that it had to. Two people comprised my music team: Larry Groupé, who was working a full time job as a composer at Network Music (a music library company), and Damon Intrabartolo, a 20 year-old full-time student at the USC School of Music. Larry conducted and did orchestration and Damon did transcription. That was it. Financial constraints forced me into making a little go a long way. The room in which the score was recorded was so small that we couldn't fit the entire orchestra in all at once. So we recorded the score multiple times with each section separately. The first two days we recorded the 38 strings, whose elbows practically rubbed the walls. I was able to foster the technique of "multiple-passing" the strings (which simply meant stacking three separate ...

John Ottman - Valkyrie
John Ottman about Vakyrie: The Valkyrie experience was unforgettable, and in the words of one executive, "the book that could never be written." That, of course, is true of many Hollywood productions, but Valkyrie was, well, one of the more challenging, or, perhaps, challenged. The highs were intrinsically tied to lows - which were certainly a test of fortitude. For me, as if the pressures of editing and scoring a difficult film weren't enough, it all coincided with the pain of a dissolving long-term relationship, career stress (from losing scoring gigs), and if that weren't enough, I also lost the friendship of a long time colleague. I guess if a bunch of "stuff" is going to hit the fan, it might as well splatter all at once. You just have to keep telling yourself what mom always said,... "This too will pass." And it did, but it took awhile. Of course, I can only generally, and very editorially, summarize the beats of the saga. The ultimate destination for the score is the final scene ("Long Live Sacred Germany.") The most weighty exercise was to make the gradual transition from thriller to emotional tragedy, being mindful not to "Hollywood-ize" this historic event. This emotive cue had to feel like a pre-existing piece placed over the scene, ala Adagio for Strings, yet it had to morph with the changing events on screen. Peppered within this cue, as well as other cues in the score, are subtle nods to the end title piece, "They'll Remember You," which is the music ...

John Ottman - ASTRO BOY (2009) - Soundtrack Suite
John Ottman's career has been highlighted by more than its share of heroic superhero-styled scores: the two Fantastic Four films, Superman Returns and X-Men 2. Strangely, despite the high level of action and multiplicity of rich characters found in these productions, Ottman's music for them comes nowhere near the heroic heights he achieves in the 3D anime adaptation Astro Boy, a curious project to result in such an entertaining career highlight for Ottman. Optimistic, Heroic Theme in Astro Boy Centered around an addictively positive, optimistic fanfare for heroic brass and full orchestral accompaniment (introduced magnificently in "Opening Theme" and explored in full concert arrangement in "Theme from Astro Boy"), the score reaches levels of energy which are never tiring, due to their cohesive structure and thematic continuity. The score's attitude of humor is constant and ever-fresh in its innocent charm, and the instrumentation (resoundingly deep in its mix, with choir added sparingly and tastefully) is a swirling concoction of rhythmic, shimmering woodwinds, propulsive timpani, and soaring brass. The enthusiasm with which the score is performed is truly marvelous as well, with action passages rendered with a spark of exuberance which surely must have left the musicians breathless. Lighter Moments and Specialty Sounds in Ottman's Adventurous Score Much of the score is also given over to quieter cues of humorous mickey-mousing, and these passages owe a great deal in ...

John Ottman - Gothika
John Ottman Thoughts about "Gothika" The Major Themes Miranda's theme is the centerpiece of the score that needed to do three things, usually simultaneously: 1.) reflect the tragedy that becomes her life, 2.) offer us hope, and 3.) suggest some insanity may or may not be going on. As a bed, the theme is supported by a confident but longing piano motif. Overlaying this is a string and choir-driven melody offering the meat and hope of her theme. On top of this I incorporated a periodic 3-note woodwind/choir motif suggesting things are a little out of kilter, which I hoped would keep the audience on its toes. -- Sort of the red herring in the score. It would also simply serve as an intriguing sinew for the film, and a way to keep Miranda's presence alive throughout. The last cue of the film (I See Dead Kids) is a very simple resolved version of Miranda's theme where the 3-note motif takes on a friendlier bent, and became one of my favorite cues. Rachael's (the ghost) theme is one of sadness and longing, as she attempts to have Miranda discover how she was murdered. Rather than go sinister every time we feel Rachael, I wanted the score to reflect the tortured history behind her character, and that she was reaching out for help. I subtly wove in a sad moaning girl's voice, as if trying to communicate. The more an audience is pulled into a character, even a ghost, the more they'll be engaged in the film - and ultimately scared more organically. The Prison theme is often used in ...

John Ottman - They'll Remember You
Ottman Valkyrie: (John Ottman) Undoubtedly the most daunting obstacle standing in the path to success for director Bryan Singer's Valkyrie is the knowledge of the vast majority of audiences of how a story about any assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler will resolve. Despite this challenge, Singer created a partially fictional depiction (though faithfully accurate on the major details) of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg's participation in a plot by several Nazi officers in early 1943 and beyond to overthrow Hitler, contain the SS, and save Germany from its inevitable annihilation. By many critical accounts, Singer was successful in not only generating enough tension to secure audience interest, but also in shielding its lead actor, Tom Cruise, from his own reputation. Valkyrie comes at a time when World War II dramas are curiously common in mainstream cinema, and this film, like its contemporary counterparts, has once again hit the mark in its impressively realistic production values. The music for such films also presents composers with generally the same problems, usually forcing them to balance melodramatic considerations with a need for stylistic restraint. Along again for the journey with Singer for this venture is John Ottman, who serves as both composer and editor. When the assignment was announced, two thoughts about Ottman's career immediately crossed the mind. First, he had long speculated in the 1990's, a time when his career was largely defined by horror ...
