The Iceberg Model helps individuals and organizations to expand their perception of a situation to see it within the context of the whole system and not limit themselves to looking at just a single activity or event. It is designed to help people to step back and identify the different patterns that, the event is part of, the possible structures that might be causing it to occur, and finally, the model that is creating those structures.

In this video, we will explore What is a SAMPLE
We will look at what it is, how does it work, why it’s important and I will also share some examples to illustrate it.
The Iceberg Theory is the concept of understanding the world with the realisation that only a small part of the things are visible and there is a lot more going on underneath the surface.
The Iceberg floats in the water with only 10% of it being visible above the water and the remaining 90% invisible under the water.
This principle can be applied everywhere in our life whether it’s learning a new skill or starting your own business - you probably see just the tip of the iceberg.
Everyone sees the winner of the competition, but nobody sees the endless hours of training to achieve those results.
People see someone driving Ferrari and thinks that person was lucky and missing the facts that the same person was working for years to get there.
You already know that everything takes longer to accomplish than you originally planned for. Maybe you thought that it will take you 1 hour to do the homework, but it actually took 2
You thought that writing a business plan will be 1 weeks job but ended up spending a month. The same goes for everything else in life.
Because we tend to see the tip of the iceberg we underestimate the time, energy and resources required to achieve the goals in our life.
So next time you look at something you have to realise that you only see the tip of the iceberg or 10% form everything that’s there.
I hope that you enjoyed this video and I was able to give you a quick overview of what Iceberg Theory is and how it can help you to achieve the results in your life.
If you enjoyed this video I would really appreciate it if you could press the like button as this will help the video reach more people and spread the message.

Hello beautiful people, today I’m going to tell you something that will make you very happy and encourage you to keep learning your new language!
Many students ask me questions like: Teacher, why do I forget new words easily? Or Why can’t I understand a language, but can’t speak it?
If you ever asked yourself this question, today you will get your answer. Let me introduce you to the language Iceberg theory.
Imagine an Iceberg: You can see only about 20% of it because the other 80% is hidden inside the water. The same way is our language vocabulary. At the top of the iceberg are the words we can say easily, but how about the other thousand words we recognize but can’t use?
Let me show you how it works:
At the bottom of the iceberg you have words you can recognize but don’t understand. They look familiar to you but you don’t know their meaning.
Next, you have words you understand when you hear them again in the same place in the same story, because of the context. The context, by the way, are the words that surround the word you are trying to understand. The context helps you clarify the meaning of the word in question.
Next in our brain iceberg we have words we only understand if the context helps us.
Next (SLIDE) we have words that we can almost understand out of context, can you imagine how many words that you have in this category? Lots of words!
Next (SLIDE) we have words we can easily understand out of their context. Notice that I said understand only, you can’t use these words yet. You probably have thousands of words in this category. Are you feeling encouraged? I told you I was going to make you feel happy today!
Next (SLIDE) are words you could remember if you needed them. Notice that there is a huge gap between knowing the meaning of a word you read or listen to and being able to recall them if you need them. Remember that you can’t use these words when you speak. How many words you have in this category?
Next (SLIDE) you have words that you have used one time when you spoke.
Next (SLIDE) YES!!! We are finally on the outside part of the iceberg. Here we have words you can use easily when you speak! So, if you can use 500 words easily, that means you know about 2500 words. If you can easily use 3000 words it means you know about 15000 words. Be encouraged!!!
In the last phase, you have words you have mastered. You know everything about that word and can use it in different sentences.
I belive that you are encouraged but also that you are asking yourself a question.
HOW CAN I MAKE WORDS GO UP?
Easy! Every time you come in contact with a word, it will go up in your iceberg. Remember that words you don’t use, will go down. My mother tongue is Brazilian Portuguese, but because I don’t use it very often, lots of words are low on my iceberg. A sad reality.
Let me give you some tips to make words go up in your iceberg:
Listen, read and use the language as much as you can.
Use power questions all the time: What are power questions? Questions that help you learn other words. Questions like: What’s this? What is this doing? How do you say…?
Speak with native speakers when you can. Ask lots of questions. If you don’t know any native speakers, you can use this cheap application to practice. If you use the code englishwithdan they will give you 15 minutes free to try. You have nothing to lose.
To finish, BE ENCOURAGED, you know many more words than the words you can speak! Isn’t that great! (SLIDE) There are a lot of hard things that come with learning a language, but you know the most important thing about it? YOU CAN DO IT! I BELIEVE IN YOU! I’M PROUD OF YOUR PROGRESS!!!
I hope you enjoyed this video, if you did please show your support by sharing it with others, giving it a like and subscribing to my channel.
I wish you the best on your journey of learning a new language.
