Indigo Dyeing
The pigment in indigo is not water soluble, so it needs to be reduced in a couple very alkaline chemicals to make it dissolve. When you dye with indigo, the vat is a yellow-green, but when you remove your dyed fibre, it turns a lovely blue.
This was meant to be the second video of the evening, but the first didn't come out at all.

Chemistry Experiment: Indigo dye
Dyeing clothes is something humans have done for almost as long as we have been wearing clothes... I this experiment we will show you how to prepare an indigo blue dye that you can use on textiles. Just be prepared that it can get pretty wet and make sure to cover up anything you don't want to turn blue. This dye really sticks!
2011 was the International Year of Chemistry and the Chemistry Calendar was set up to spread the word of how chemistry is all around us. The Chemistry Calendar Experiments are linked to the different themes of the Chemistry Calendar videos to give educators and students ideas of how to work with these videos in the classroom. Enjoy!

Dye Hair Black NATURALLY with Henna & Indigo Powder
Want to get black hair without the chemicals? Fear NOT There is a way!!!
It can be somewhat of a process but if your serious about your hair you wont mind.
Henna is a natural conditioning agent made of plants that have a natural dye. It will give your hair a reddish tint/gloss however if you do a 2-step process with indigo powder you will have black hair as a result.

Henna and Indigo Hair Dye - How I do it!
I have finally found the technique that works for me, which is the 2 step process. First of all I dye my hair with the henna, and then the indigo afterwards.
I no longer want to use the chemical hair dye that you can buy, because I have researched what PPD can do to you, and it's scary!
If you are after a lighter brown result, then I suggest using the one step process where you mix the henna and indigo together and apply it in one go. However that didn't work for me as I wanted a darker result.
I strongly suggest that you visit this forum for advice, it's excellent and there is a ton of information on there: www.hennaforhair.com
I bought my henna and indigo from here: www.suvarna.co.uk
If you have any questions, just leave them in a comment and I will answer as best I can :)

Indigo Tie-Dyeing by Jacquard
Luscious indigo color in an easy to use form! The indigo blue color has played an important role in several cultures throughout history. There are an astounding number of books that are just devoted to this one dye. The famous Blue Men of Morroco are a north African tribe who dress from head to toe in indigo dyed fabric.
Natural indigo takes a considerable amount of effort to get it into a working dye bath. First off, it is not soluble in water. So, you need to reduce it chemically with Sodium Hydrosulfite and lye. It is very involved and can be time consuming.
As an alternative, we have developed a pre-Reduced Indigo. You still need to add Sodium Hydrosulfite, but the lye is replaced by Soda Ash. It only takes about 10 minutes to prepare the dye bath and you get the same unique results as with the regular indigo.
