John Howard receives the Order of Merit from The Queen
Former Australian prime minister John Howard has been presented with a rare and exclusive accolade from the Queen, but insists the greatest honour of his public life remains his time in Australia's top job. This report was broadcast by the ABC on 1 June 2012. AAP reports that during a meeting with the monarch at Buckingham Palace Mr Howard, received the insignia of a member of the Order of Merit, a credit for which recipients are hand-picked by the Sovereign for their distinguished service. "It's a very nice honour and I feel particularly touched that I should have received it," Mr Howard told reporters, proudly clutching his medal. "I am touched by the personal compliment but I also see it very much as a mark of the Queen's great affection and esteem for Australia. "What I did, of course, I did as an Australian and as prime minister of the country. It was the greatest privilege anybody can have to be prime minister of Australia and I certainly see it very much as a mark of respect for our country." The Order, of which there can be only 24 living recipients, is also held by Prince Philip, Prince Charles, former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, broadcaster David Attenborough and playwright Tom Stoppard. Mr Howard and ecologist Robert May are the only current Australian members of the Order, while opera singer Joan Sutherland and artist Sidney Nolan are among past recipients. Mr Howard was accompanied by his wife Janette and youngest son Richard for Thursday's ...

Valerie Vili recieves Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit
Their age and experiences are far apart, but Olympic and world shotput champion Valerie Vili and Major Hone Waititi, the only surviving company commander of the 28th Maori Battalion, have one thing in common - both brought honour to their country. Yesterday, their country honoured them as they joined business, sport, medical, arts and community leaders at an investiture ceremony in Auckland. Some of the country's top business, sports, medical, arts and community leaders have been honoured at a ceremony in Auckland. The first batch of up to 77 people to receive the country's top honours were recognised at an investiture ceremony at Government House yesterday. Among them were top businessman Tony Gibbs and actress Mabel Wharekawa-Burt. Vili, made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to athletics, said the day had been one of reflection. "When I first got asked [to accept the award], I was just thinking about doing this in the last 10 years - it's been a massive ride." Being honoured alongside some of the country's top people was another reason to celebrate. "It's pretty amazing to be sitting right next to them. I'm very happy, very honoured. It goes to show how much your country appreciates you." Family and friends joined the 18 people honoured at yesterday's ceremony. Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand paid tribute to each of them, calling for New Zealanders to use their success as an inspiration to do the same. "If we, other New Zealanders, can ...

Art of Photography - Bruno Barbey
Bruno Barbey is a Frenchman born in Morocco. He studied photography and graphic arts at the École des Arts et Métiers in Vevey, Switzerland. Between 1961 and 1964 he photographed the Italians, treating them as protagonists of a small 'theatrical world', with the aim of capturing the spirit of a nation. During the 1960s, he was commissioned by Éditions Rencontre in Lausanne to report from European and African countries. He also contributed regularly to Vogue. Barbey began his relationship with Magnum Photos in 1964, becoming an associate member in 1966, and a full member in 1968, the year he documented the political unrest and student riots in Paris. A decade later, between 1979 and 1981, he photographed Poland at a turning point in its history, publishing his work in the widely acclaimed book Poland. Over four decades Barbey has journeyed across five continents and into numerous military conflicts. Although he rejects the label of 'war photographer', he has covered civil wars in Nigeria, Vietnam, the Middle East, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Kuwait. His work has appeared in most of the world's major magazines. Barbey is known particularly for his free and harmonious use of colour. He has frequently worked in Morocco, the country of his childhood. In 1999 the Petit Palais, Paris, organized a large exhibition of photographs that Barbey had taken in Morocco during the previous three decades. He has received many awards for his work, including the French ...

Major General John Cantwell: Exit Wounds
Major General John Cantwell discusses his book Exit Wounds, a searing story of the realities of Australia's recent wars and the enduring scars they leave on our armed forces, with Professor Amin Saikal. Australia has been at war for the past twenty years and yet there has been no stand-out account from these conflicts. The Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts have constituted major Australian military involvements since the Vietnam War. In the case of Afghanistan, Australia has paid much in blood and treasure. Major General John Cantwell AO DSC retired from the Australian Army in early 2012 after a unique career spanning almost 40 years. Starting as a 17-year-old Private in 1973, he rose through the ranks in a career that included Commanding Officer of the Royal Military College at Duntroon, Commander of a brigade of around 3000 troops, the Deputy Chief of the Army, and Head of the Force Structure Review as part of the 2009 Defence White Paper. He was also Interim Head (and later, Chief of Operations) of the Victoria Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, coordinating all Commonwealth, State and non-government efforts to recover from the deadly Black Saturday fires in 2009. Major-General Cantwell served in three distinct wars: combat duty in Operation Desert Storm in 1991; as the Director of Strategic Operations in the US-led coalition headquarters in Baghdad in 2006; and as the Commander of all Australian forces in Afghanistan and the wider Middle East area of ...
