THIS BASE IS OPEN 24/7. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN A MISSION IS GONNA COME IN. THERE COULD BE A WEATHER DIVERT OR LATE NIGHT MISSION OR D-V COMING IN. SO SOMEBODY HAS TO BE MANNING THE FACILITY. WHEN FLIGHTS ARE DEPARTING YOU ISSUE THEM THEIR CLEARANCES AND DEPART THEM. MAKE SURE THE RUN WAY IS CLEAR AND WHEN THEY ARE COMING IN YOU SEQUENCE AND SEPARATE THEM MAKING SURE THEY DON’T TOUCH EACH OTHER. AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE SOME I WOULDN’T SAY SPLIT SECOND DECISIONS BUT SOME FAST DECISIONS.

Grand Forks, North Dakota
Grand Forks is the third-largest city in the State of North Dakota (after Fargo and Bismarck) and the county seat of Grand Forks County. According to the 2010 census, the city's population was 52,838, while that of the city and surrounding metropolitan area was 98,461. Grand Forks, along with its twin city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, forms the center of the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is often called Greater Grand Forks or The Grand Cities.
Located on the western banks of the Red River of the North in a flat region known as the Red River Valley, the city is prone to flooding and was struck by the devastating Red River Flood of 1997. Originally called Les Grandes Fourches by French fur traders, Grand Forks was founded in 1870 by steamboat captain Alexander Griggs and incorporated on February 22, 1881. Its location at the fork of the Red River and the Red Lake River gives the city its name.
Historically dependent on local agriculture, the city's economy now encompasses higher education, defense, health care, manufacturing, food processing, and scientific research. Grand Forks is served by Grand Forks International Airport and Grand Forks Air Force Base, while the city's University of North Dakota is the oldest institution of higher education in the state. The Alerus Center and Ralph Engelstad Arena host athletic and other events, while the North Dakota Museum of Art and Chester Fritz Auditorium are the city's largest cultural venues.

Air force
An air force, also known in some countries as an air army, is in the broadest sense, the national military organization that primarily conducts aerial warfare. Military airbase
An military airbase (sometimes referred to as a military airfield, military airport, air force station, air force base or short airbase) is an aerodrome used by a military force for the operation of military aircraft.
Airbase facilities
An airbase typically has some facilities similar to a civilian airport—for example air traffic control and firefighting. Some military aerodromes have passenger facilities; for example RAF Brize Norton in England has a terminal used by passengers for the Royal Air Force's flights by TriStar to the Falkland Islands. A number of military airbases also have a civil enclave for commercial passenger flights, e.g. Beijing Nanyuan Airport (China), Ibaraki Airport (Japan), Burlington International Airport (USA).
Some airbases have revetments, hardened aircraft shelters, or even underground hangars, to protect aircraft from enemy attack. Combat aircraft require storage of aircraft ordnance. An airbase may be defended by anti-aircraft weapons and force protection troops.

Grand Forks Air Force Base
Grand Forks Air Force Base (AFB) (IATA: RDR, ICAO: KRDR, FAA LID: RDR) is a United States Air Force installation in northeastern North Dakota, located north of Emerado and 16 miles (26 km) west of Grand Forks. In the 2010 census, the base was counted as a census-designated place with a total population of 2,367, down from 4,832 in 2000.
Opened 59 years ago in early 1957, the base's current host unit is the 319th Air Base Wing (319 ABW) assigned to the Expeditionary Center of the Air Mobility Command (AMC). The 319th Air Base Wing is commanded by Colonel Rodney Lewis and the wing Command Chief Master Sergeant is CMSgt Todd R. Krulcik. Schools on base: Nathan Twining Elementary School During the Cold War, GFAFB was a major installation of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), with B-52 bombers, KC-135 tankers, and Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Grand Forks AFB is the home of the Air Mobility Command's (AMC) 319th Air Base Wing (319 ABW). The 319 ABW is organized into two distinct groups: Mission Support and Medical.

Cancun Timelapse
Christmas 2013 was spent in Cancun, Mèxico with my beautiful wife Miriam and her family. Miriam and I are now back in Grand Forks, North Dakota and already I am anxious to travel once again; back to Cancun or beyond. With sub-zero temperatures forecasted for the Grand Forks area this weekend, it seems the perfect time to reflect on our recent vacation through a series of time-lapse videos taken from the Cancun area and put together with music inspired by last summers blockbuster film, "The Great Gatsby." Jason Schaefer’s passions center on themes of innovation, community, and sustainability. He brings a great deal of enthusiasm coupled with Midwestern pragmatism. Jason currently serves on the boards of the Grand Forks Downtown Development Association and Amazing Grains Food Cooperative.
Jason has always had a strong interest in cities and had the chance to live in some great ones, including Almuñécar, Spain; Missoula, MT; Boston, MA; Washington, DC; Fargo, ND; and, of course, Grand Forks, ND. Last year, he was awarded a McCloy Fellowship to study urban sustainability initiatives while visiting Amsterdam and seven cities across Germany. Christmas 2013 was spent in Cancun, Mèxico with my beautiful wife Miriam and her family. Miriam and I are now back in Grand Forks, North Dakota and already I am anxious to travel once again; back to Cancun or beyond. With sub-zero temperatures forecasted for the Grand Forks area this weekend, it seems the perfect time to reflect on our recent vacation through a series of time-lapse videos taken from the Cancun area and put together with music inspired by last summers blockbuster film, "The Great Gatsby." (The rainbow that appears at the end of the video was a complete surprise to capture. While running the time-lapse, I stepped away from my camera for a bit and when I came back - there it was.)
