Thomas Feargal "Tom" Hagen is a fictional character in Mario Puzo's novel Godfather and Francis Ford Coppola's films The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. He was portrayed by Robert Duvall in the films.
Hagen is the informally adopted son of Don Vito Corleone, is a qualified lawyer, and the consigliere to the Corleone Mafia family. Mild-mannered and soft-spoken, he serves as the voice of reason within the family. The novel and first film establish that he is of German-Irish ancestry.
Sonny Corleone befriends 11-year-old Tom, who was living on the street after running away from an orphanage. When Sonny brings Tom home and demands he be taken in, the Corleone family allowed him to stay. Hagen considers Vito his true father, though Vito never formally adopts Tom, believing it disrespectful to Hagen's deceased parents. After law school, Hagen wanted to work in the Corleone business. His non-Italian ancestry precludes his formal membership into the Mafia, but after the Don's consigliere, Genco Abbandando, dies, Hagen is given his position. This results in the other New York families derisively calling the Corleones, "The Irish Gang."
Vito Andolini Corleone is a fictional character in Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather and in Francis Ford Coppola's film series based on the novel, where he was portrayed by Marlon Brando in The Godfather and, as a young man, by Robert De Niro in The Godfather Part II.
Premiere Magazine listed Vito Corleone as the greatest film character in history. He was also selected as the 53rd greatest film character by Empire.
Vito Corleone is the head of the Corleone crime family – the most powerful Mafia family in New York City. He is depicted as an orphaned Sicilian immigrant who builds a Mafia empire. Upon his death at the end of the novel, his youngest son, Michael, succeeds him as the head of the Corleone family. Vito has two other sons, Santino ("Sonny") and Frederico ("Fredo" or "Freddie"), as well as a daughter, Connie, all of whom play major roles in the story. He also informally adopts Sonny's friend, Tom Hagen, who becomes the Family's consigliere.
Vito oversees a business founded on gambling, bootlegging, and union corruption, but he is known as a generous man who lives by a strict moral code of loyalty to friends and, above all, family. He is also known as a traditionalist who demands respect commensurate with his status; even his closest friends refer to him as "Godfather" or "Don Corleone" rather than "Vito".

One of my favorite scenes; sadly couldn't find it online. Vince Gilligan made this, AMC owns it, I watched it.
This is a deleted scene from The Godfather sourced from The Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980. This scene takes place after Clemenza, Tessio, Rocco, and Carlo leave the study and before another deleted scene in which Vito takes Michael out to the garden to talk. In this scene, Tom asks Michael why he is being temporarily replaced as consigliere and pleads with him to let him stay on, but Michael coldly refuses.
