Rudraprayag district, (Hindi: रुद्र प्रयाग जिला) is a district of Uttarakhand state of northern India. The district occupies an area of 2439 km². Rudraprayag town is the administrative headquarters of the district.

The district is bounded by Uttarkashi District on the north, Chamoli District on the east, Pauri Garhwal District on the south, and Tehri Garhwal District on the south.

Rudraprayag District was established on 16th September1997. The district was carved out from the following areas of three adjoining districts.

1- Whole of Augustmuni & Ukhimath block and part of Pokhri & Karnprayag block from Chamoli District.

2- Part of Jakholi and Kirtinagar block from Tehri District.

3- Part of Khirsu block from Pauri District.

Internationally Known Shri Kedarnath Temple is at North, Madmaheshwar at east, Nagrasu at southern east and Shrinagar at extreme south. The holy Mandakini originated from Kedarnath is the main river of the district.

As of 2011 it is the least populous district of Uttarakhand (out of 13).^[1]

According to the 2011 census Rudraprayag district has a population of 236,857,^[2] roughly equal to the nation of Vanuatu.^[3] This gives it a ranking of 585th in India (out of a total of 640).^[2] The district has a population density of 119 inhabitants per square kilometre (310 /sq mi) .^[2] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 4.14 %.^[2] Rudraprayag has a sex ratio of 1120 females for every 1000 males,^[2] and a literacy rate of 82.09 %.^[2]

As of 2001^[update] Indian census, the Rudraprayag district had a population of 227,439. Hindus 225,773, Muslims 1,406 (.61%), religion not stated 90.^[4]

Rudraprayag (Devanagari: रुद्र प्रयाग) is a town and a municipality in Rudraprayag district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Rudraprayag is one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of Alaknanda River, the point of confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. Alaknanda then proceeds towards Devaprayag where it joins with Bhagirathi river to form the river Ganges. Kedarnath, a Hindu holy town is located 86 km from Rudraprayag.

Rudraprayag is also known for its infamous man-eating leopard (Leopard of Rudraprayag) which is reputed to have killed over 125 people , hunted by Jimm Corbett.

Rudraprayag is located at 30°17′N 78°59′E / 30.28°N 78.98°E / 30.28; 78.98.^[1] It has an average elevation of 895 metres (2,936 feet).

As of 2001^[update] India census,^[2] Rudra Prayag had a population of 2242. Males constitute 63% of the population and females 37%. Rudra Prayag has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 68%. In Rudra Prayag, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Air[link]

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun 183 km (114 mi) away.

Railway[link]

The nearest railway station is at Rishikesh. However, Rishikesh is a small railway station not connected by fast trains. Haridwar railway junction, 24 km farther from Rishikesh, has train connections to most of the major cities in India and is, therefore, the railhead for Rudraprayag.

Road[link]

Rudraprayag lies on national highway NH58 that connects Delhi with Badrinath and Mana Pass in Uttarakhand near Indo-Tibet border. Therefore all the buses and vehicles that carry pilgrims from New Delhi to Badrinath via Haridwar and Rishikesh in pilgrim season of summer months pass through Rudraprayag on the way to Joshimath and further north. Rishikesh is the major starting point for road journey to Rudraprayag and regular buses operate from Rishikesh bus station to Rudraprayag. The road distance from Rishikesh to Rudraprayag is 141 km (88 mi) via Devprayag and Srinagar.

Temples[link]

Rudranath Temple Rudraprayag is named after Lord Shiva and temple of lord Rudranath is situated at the confluence of Alaknand and Mandakini. According to mythology Narda Muni worshiped god Shiva here to learn music from him. The god then teach Music in his form of Rudra (Lord of Music) to Narad Muni. There is rock where it is said that Narad did his worship now this rock is know as Narad Shila.

Chamunda Devi Temple Chamunda Devi temple is also situated at confluence of the holy rivers ( Alaknada & Mandakini), Chamunda as wife of Lord Rudra is worshiped there.

Koteshwar Koti means crore (10 Million) and Ishwar means god. This is again a temple of Lord shiva made in Natural caves.

Shree Tungeshwar Mahadev Ji, Phalasi (फलासी) Near Chopta This temple is there for centuries. Folklore has it that Pandavas came here for penance. On way from Chopta there were many small temples on way to Tunganath Temple, the remains of some are still there.On the Temple wall there are many terracota style seals and Shiva Parvati figurines. A very ancient temple held in very high esteem by many villages, right in the midst of amazing n spellbounding natural beauty.

Kartik Swami The Kartik Swami temple is dedicated to lord Kartikeya - son of Lord Shiva. It can be reached by a 3 km trek from Kanak Chauri village, which is located on the Rudraprayag-Pokhri route, 38 km from Rudraprayag. You can have a magnificent views of the snow-clad Himalayan range from the Kartik Swami temple.^[3]

Deepak Tiwari is an Indian reporter, Principal Correspondent of The Week magazine. He lives in Bhopal, where he covers the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. However, he has also covered news stories by visiting countries like United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand outside India. He was born in village Dhana of Sagar district. His schooling was done at St Joseph Convent School and Central School, Sagar. He did his journalism degree with gold medal from Dr HS Gour University, Sagar and his journalistic career in 1993 from All India Radio.

He also worked for Press Trust of India (PTI) New Delhi, MP Chronicle and Free Press news papers in Bhopal.

With The Week magazine he has written number of stories expressing concern over the plight of women and weaker section of society.

His stories have been earthy with a human touch. A feature film Devaki was made in 2004 based on one his story on women being auctioned in tribal society.
