Optical Fibres
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com An optical fiber is made up of the core (carrying the light pulses), the cladding (reflecting the light pulses back into the core) and the buffer coating (protecting the core and cladding from moisture, damage, etc). Together, all of this creates a fiber optic which can carry up to 10 million messages at any time using light pulses. Fiber optics is the overlap of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibers. Optical fibers are widely used in fiber-optic communications, which permits transmission over longer distances and at higher bandwidths (data rates) than other forms of communications. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with less loss and are also immune to electromagnetic interference. Fibers are also used for illumination, and are wrapped in bundles so they can be used to carry images, thus allowing viewing in tight spaces. Specially designed fibers are used for a variety of other applications, including sensors and fiber lasers. Light is kept in the core of the optical fiber by total internal reflection. This causes the fiber to act as a waveguide. Fibers which support many propagation paths or transverse modes are called multi-mode fibers (MMF), while those which can only support a single mode are called single-mode fibers (SMF). Multi-mode fibers generally have a larger core diameter, and are used for short-distance communication links and for ...

euronews science - Man's oldest fibre holds bandage breakthrough
www.euronews.com Traditional bandages for protecting and healing wounds may soon be a thing of the past thanks to a team of scientists in Wroclaw University, Poland. They claim they have genetically modified a 'flax' "en.wikipedia.org to produce linen bandages that dramatically improve healing. The team says it has boosted antioxidant compounds in the plants to improve regrowth of skin cells, which can proliferate in the cavity of a wound. Doctors tested the system on 60 patients: 80% of them saw some sort of improvement, while 20% of those healed completely. "Flax has great possibilities. But traditional flax doesn't have that effect. It has to be innovative, created by biotechnological methods, with a specific aim, modified to result in a proper product," said Genetic Biochemist Dr. Jan Szopa-Skorski. For the moment, this treatment has only been approved in Poland for use on the skin, but researchers at the biochemistry laboratory at Wroclaw University have started to investigate whether it has other uses. "It's an innovative product on a world scale, although it's not the only one. At the moment we have begun research on several products based on this plant: an anti-infection oil that could be used in arteriosclerosis treatment and a product for cancer treatment," said Szopa-Skorski. Furthermore scientists are confident that GM flax could create a whole new industrial sector producing profits for farmers and manufacturers. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www ...

International Year of Natural Fibres
www.naturalfibres2009.org - International Year of Natural Fibres Cotton, wool, silk, jute, flax, sisal... Natural fibre industries employ millions of people and contribute to a greener planet The International Year of Natural Fibres will be officially launched on 22 January 2009, at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome. Objectives •raise awareness and stimulate demand for natural fibres; •promote the efficiency and sustainability of the natural fibres industries; •encourage appropriate policy responses from governments to the problems faced by natural fibre industries; •foster an effective and enduring international partnership among the various natural fibres industries. What are Natural Fibres? Natural fibres may be defined as those renewable fibres from plants or animals which can be easily transformed into a yarn for textiles. Animal fibres are largely those which cover mammals such as sheep, goats and rabbits, but include also the cocoon of the silk-worm. Vegetable fibres are derived from the stem, leaf or seed of various plants. Close to 30 million tonnes of natural fibres are produced annually in the world, of which cotton is dominant with 20 million tonnes, wool and jute each around 2 to 3 million tonnes followed by a number of others. What are Natural Fibres used for? Natural fibres form an important component of clothing, upholstery and other textiles for consumers, and many of them also have industrial ...

How to cover parts in carbon fiber (fibre) by skinning or wrapping
In this video we show you how to take an existing part and cover it it real carbon fibre. In the video we use a carbon fibre skinning kit (available from www.carbonmods.co.uk ) which includes all of the materials needed to cover a number of parts in carbon fibre. We call this technique skinning but other name are carbon fibre wrapping, coating and covering. This product and many more are also available from http To talk about your project or see what others are getting up to please join in on the forum www.talkcomposites.com

I made a detailed video on the process of making a carbon fibre windshield. This windshield is for my snowmobile but the same process can be used for any carbon fibre parts or motorcycle windshield etc. Just make sure it isn't a windshield that you have to see through - because you can't see through carbon fibre:)
