WCGO

WCGO (1590 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Talk format. Licensed to Evanston, Illinois, USA, it serves the Chicago area. The station is currently owned by Kovas Communications.

History

The station was launched September 29, 1947, as WNMP, which had a light-classical and beautiful music format, along with broadcasting college sports on Saturday afternoons. State Representative Harry Semrow was one of the early owners. The station changed hands several times, and the call sign was changed to WLTD in the early 1970s.

On April 9, 1979, the station's call sign was changed to WONX.

On April 10, 2009, the previous WCGO on 1600, also owned by Kovas, went silent. On April 13, 2009, the call sign was changed to WCGO. With 1600 now vacant, WCGO on 1590 AM was able to increase daytime power to 10,000 Watts. Nighttime power is 2,500 watts using a four-tower directional antenna array.

WCGO begun producing Talk Radio shows starting on September 2, 2014 including "The Franklin Raff Show" (weekdays 12 noon - 2pm) and "The Geoff Pinkus Show." On July 13, 2015 it moved legendary "Milt Rosenberg" to weekdays 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Radio

Radio is the use of radio waves is to carry information, such as sound, by systematically modulating some property of electromagnetic energy waves transmitted through space, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form.

Radio systems need a transmitter to modulate (change) some property of the energy produced to impress a signal on it, for example using amplitude modulation or angle modulation (which can be frequency modulation or phase modulation). Radio systems also need an antenna to convert electric currents into radio waves, and vice versa. An antenna can be used for both transmitting and receiving. The electrical resonance of tuned circuits in radios allow individual stations to be selected. The electromagnetic wave is intercepted by a tuned receiving antenna. A radio receiver receives its input from an antenna and converts it into a form usable for the consumer, such as sound, pictures, digital data, measurement values, navigational positions, etc. Radio frequencies occupy the range from a 3 kHz to 300 GHz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum.

Local content

In 2009 MTV ranked Coyote Radio as the best internet college station in America and the third best of all stations. The station’s mix of music includes many Southern Californian new musical artists, such as: Noa James, 200 West, New Division, What Hands are For, Dose of Adolescence, The Maxies, Apryle Dalmacio, Soul of the River, 100 Proof, Knock Out, Hammers and Hearts, and George Jauss & the Messenjahs.

Audience

The music of Southern California and the message of CSUSB is carried to a potential audience of 200,000+ cable television viewers via San Bernardino’s channel 3, to the entire campus audience via the CSUSB/Coyote Radio website and to millions of potential other listeners due to Coyote Radio’s listing as an official iTunes-recommended college station. As an iTunes station, CSUSB joins a group of universities permanently featured on the hugely popular site, including Stanford, Penn State, Yale and Columbia University. Unlike many campus stations, Coyote Radio is heard 24 hours a day.
