Michael Joseph "Mike" Mignola ( /ˌmɪnˈjoʊlə/; born 16 September 1960) is an American comic book artist and writer who created the comic book series Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics. He has worked for animation projects such as Atlantis: The Lost Empire and the adaptation of his one shot comic book, The Amazing Screw-On Head.

Career[link]

Mignola was born in September 16, 1960 Berkeley, California.^[1] He began his career in 1980 by illustrating spots in the Comic Reader. His first published piece was in the Comic Reader #183, a spot illustration of Red Sonja (pg. 9). His first published front cover was the Comic Reader #196; Dominic Fortune, the Spirit, and Doc Savage in November 1981. In 1982 he graduated from the California College of the Arts with a BFA in Illustration.^[2]

In 1983 he worked on inking at Marvel Comics, working on Daredevil and Power Man & Iron Fist for Marvel Comics, and later worked on titles such as The Incredible Hulk, Alpha Flight and the Rocket Raccoon limited-series.

With writer Jim Starlin, Mignola produced the Cosmic Odyssey miniseries in 1988.^[3]

Mignola drew covers for several Batman stories, including Batman: A Death in the Family^[4] and Dark Knight, Dark City.

Through the early 1990s Mignola worked on covers and backup features for various DC and Marvel comics.

Hellboy[link]

Until 1994 Mignola had illustrated the work of others. In 1994 he illustrated his own work, his first Hellboy story, The Seed of Destruction, scripted by John Byrne, and published by Dark Horse Comics, followed by further stories, with associated merchandise. The Hellboy story Wolves of St. August and most later stories were scripted by Mignola, though other writers and artists have also worked on the character. All major story arcs were drawn by Mike Mignola, but in 2007 artist Duncan Fegredo took over drawing, with Mignola remaining on as writer and cover artist. He also writes the spin-off BPRD with John Arcudi, drawn by Guy Davis with Mignola as cover artist. The 2008 one-shot In the Chapel of Moloch was the first Hellboy comic he provided the script and art for since The Island in 2005.^[5]

Style[link]

Mignola's style was called "German expressionism meets Jack Kirby" by Alan Moore, in an introduction to a collection of Mignola's Hellboy works.^[6] His style has also been likened to an amalgamation of Jack Kirby and Alex Toth.^[7]

Film and television[link]

Mignola worked as an illustrator for Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 movie Bram Stoker's Dracula. He was also the production designer for the Disney feature film, Atlantis: The Lost Empire in 2001, and was a concept artist for 2002's Blade II, also directed by del Toro.

Mignola's design of the 1880s Batman costume from the comic Batman: Gotham by Gaslight appeared in Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Hellboy was made into a feature film in 2004 by director Guillermo del Toro. Mignola was closely involved with the movie's production, and a sequel was released in 2008. Recently, Hellboy has been made into two direct-to-video animated films, Sword of Storms in 2006 and Blood and Iron in 2007.

Mignola's The Amazing Screw-On Head debuted in 2006 on the Sci-Fi Channel, starring the voices of Paul Giamatti and David Hyde Pierce.

Christopher Golden (born July 15, 1967) is an American author of horror, fantasy, and suspense novels for adults, teens, and young readers.

Golden was born and raised in Massachusetts, where he still lives with his family. He is a graduate of Tufts University. As well as novels, Golden has also written comic books and video games and co-written the online animated series Ghosts of Albion with actress/writer/director Amber Benson. He wrote the introduction to the now collectible 200 only copies slipcased edition to Joe Hill's book of short stories titled 20th Century Ghosts.

Dark horse is a term used to describe a little-known person or thing that emerges to prominence, especially in a competition of some sort^[1] or a contestant that seems unlikely to succeed.^[2]

Origin[link]

The term began as horse racing parlance. A dark horse is a race horse that is not known to gamblers and thus is difficult to place betting odds on.

The earliest-known use of the phrase is in Benjamin Disraeli's novel The Young Duke (1831). Disraeli's protagonist, the Duke of St. James, attends a horse race with a surprise finish: "A dark horse which had never been thought of, and which the careless St. James had never even observed in the list, rushed past the grandstand in sweeping triumph."^[3]

Use in the political arena[link]

The term has been used politically in such countries as Peru, Philippines^[4] and United States.

Politically, the term reached America in the nineteenth century when it was first applied to James K. Polk, a relatively unknown Tennessee Democrat who won the Democratic Party's 1844 presidential nomination over a host of better-known candidates. Polk won the nomination on the ninth ballot, and went on to win the presidential election.

Other famous dark horse candidates for the United States presidency include:

• Franklin Pierce, chosen as the Democratic nominee and later elected the 14th president in 1852.
• Abraham Lincoln, chosen as the Republican nominee and elected as the 16th president in 1860.
• Rutherford B. Hayes, elected the 19th president in 1876.
• James A. Garfield, elected the 20th president in 1880.
• Warren G. Harding, elected the 29th president in 1920 after his surprise nomination.
• Jimmy Carter, elected the 39th president in 1976; in the beginning of that same year, Carter was a relative unknown outside his home state of Georgia.

Outside of the United States, the term was also applied to Alberto Fujimori, who rose to the Presidency in Peru and Jejomar Binay, who rose to the Vice Presidency in the Philippines.^{[citation needed]}

Recently Sarah Grainger for the BBC News website, used the term to refer to former army officer Diosdado Cabello, who helped Hugo Chávez to stage a failed coup in 1992, in an article about possible successors for Hugo Chávez.^[5]

Use in film[link]

The term dark horse is also used outside the political context. Surprising or unlikely nominations for such prizes as the Academy Award (awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) are referred to as dark horses.

Use in music[link]

Guitarist and singer-songwriter George Harrison was nicknamed the "dark horse" of The Beatles, as his visibility as a songwriter and vocalist increased later in the Beatles' career, particularly on Abbey Road. Harrison went on to name his solo label Dark Horse Records, and to release both an album and a song named Dark Horse.

The blues band Savoy Brown have been called the "Dark Horse" band before, because of how under-appreciated they were.

The rock bands Crazy Town and Nickelback have albums titled Darkhorse and Dark Horse, respectively.

Scott Allie is an American comics writer and editor, currently the Senior Managing Editor for Dark Horse Comics.

Early life[link]

Scott Allie grew up in Ipswich, Massachusetts.^[1]

Career[link]

Scott Allie is the author of The Devil's Footprints and the editor of the Hellboy, Conan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Serenity comics, as well as the founding editor of Dark Horse's line of horror comics.^[2] He also wrote the Buffy short stories "The Ghosts of Slayers Past" and "Alone" for the Tales of the Slayer collection. In 2008, he started writing the debut comics miniseries of Solomon Kane,^[3] "The Castle of the Devil,"^[4] as well as Exurbia, a twisted urban adventure tale that is a departure from his usual horror writing.^[5]

He recently completed Star Wars: Jedi: The Dark Side and B.P.R.D.: The Dead Remembered, and is currently writing issues of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 9 and several B.P.R.D. one-shots with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
