Ocean Circulation: south polar north atlantic
Ocean circulation can be envisaged simply as a system of conveyer belts for large-scale oceanic currents. These are driven by changes in the density of the water mass. The density changes when sunshine, precipitation and evaporation change the temperature and salinity of the water. In addition wind and the tidal forces play important roles. The Thermohaline Circulation - The Great Ocean Conveyor Belt
The oceans are mostly composed of warm salty water near the surface over cold, less salty water in the ocean depths. These two regions don't mix except in certain special areas. The ocean currents, the movement of the ocean in the surface layer, are driven mostly by the wind. In certain areas near the polar oceans, the colder surface water also gets saltier due to evaporation or sea ice formation. In these regions, the surface water becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths. This pumping of surface water into the deep ocean forces the deep water to move horizontally until it can find an area on the world where it can rise back to the surface and close the current loop. This usually occurs in the equatorial ocean, mostly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This very large, slow current is called the thermohaline circulation because it is caused by temperature and salinity (haline) variations. This animation shows one of the major regions where this pumping occurs, the North Atlantic Ocean around Greenland, Iceland, and the North Sea. The surface ocean current brings new water to this region from the South Atlantic via the Gulf Stream and the water returns to the South Atlantic via the North Atlantic Deep Water current. The continual influx of warm water into the North Atlantic polar ocean keeps the regions around Iceland and southern Greenland mostly free of sea ice year round. The animation also shows another feature of the global ocean circulation: the Antarctic ...

Atlantic currents have seen 'drastic' changes: study (Carbon Scam Alert)
Scientists have found evidence of a "drastic" shift since the 1970s in north Atlantic Ocean currents that usually influence weather in the northern hemisphere, Swiss researchers said on Tuesday. The team of biochemists and oceanographers from Switzerland, Canada and the United States detected changes in deep sea Atlantic corals that indicated the declining influence of the cold northern Labrador Current. They said in the US National Academy of Science journal PNAS that the change "since the early 1970s is largely unique in the context of the last approximately 1800 years," and raised the prospect of a direct link with global warming. The Labrador Current interacts with the warmer Gulfstream from the south. They in turn have a complex interaction with a climate pattern, the North Atlantic Oscillation, which has a dominant impact on weather in Europe and North America. Entire Story: www.rawstory.com "The researchers suspect there is a direct connection between the changes in oceanic currents in the North Atlantic and global warming caused by human activities," said EAWAG in a statement.

Secretary General - Opening remarks to North Atlantic Council meeting
Opening remarks by Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen at the Meeting of the North Atlantic Council meeting in Foreign Ministers Session Ministers, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good afternoon and welcome to this meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers. As we meet, the situation along NATO's south-eastern border and the repeated violations of Turkish sovereignty raise grave concern. Turkey has requested the deployment of Patriot missiles to augment its air defence to deter against any threat, to defend its population and territory, and to contribute to the de-escalation of the crisis along the Alliance's border. We stand with Turkey in the spirit of strong solidarity. And we stand ready to take the necessary steps for the defence of Turkey. Meeting the security challenges of the 21st century requires continued Alliance solidarity. It requires continued political, military and economic investment in defence despite the current economic crisis. And it requires close relations with our partners.

GOM...Louisiana...Extermination...A Cataclysm in 3 Acts (2 of 3)
The following is a presentation of the events surrounding the GOM devastation and ensuing Gulf states destruction. For the sake of continuity, this will be presented in 3 videos -- or acts....(1) disaster -- (2) the year following the disaster and (3) post, or current status and the underlying intent of the disaster. Each of these segments stand alone on their own merit, but it is important for you to view them in order so you grasp the full scope of this diabolical plan. Snow in the middle of Australian Summer! Is this the dawn of a new ice Age?
www.independentamerican.org The latest satellite data establishes that the North Atlantic Current (also called the North Atlantic Drift) no longer exists and along with it the Norway Current. These two warm water currents are actually part of the same system that has several names depending on where in the Atlantic Ocean it is. The entire system is a key part of the planet's heat regulatory system; it is what keeps Ireland and the United Kingdom mostly ice free and the Scandinavia countries from being too cold; it is what keeps the entire world from another Ice Age. This Thermohaline Circulation System is now dead in places and dying in others. This 'river' of warm water that moves through the Atlantic Ocean is called, in various places, the South Atlantic Current, the North Brazil Current, the Caribbean Current, the Yucatan Current, the Loop Current, the Florida Current, the Gulf Stream, the North Atlantic Current (or North Atlantic Drift) and the Norway Current.

Grímsey
The beautiful Grímsey, Iceland. Grímsey is a small island (5.3 square kilometres) in the country of Iceland, 40 kilometres off the north coast of the main island of Iceland. The Arctic Circle runs through the island, while the entirety of mainland Iceland lies south of the Arctic Circle. Grímsey is the northernmost inhabited Icelandic territory: the islet of Kolbeinsey lies further north, but is uninhabited. The closest land is the island of Flatey, in Skjálfandi bay, 39 kilometres to the south. There are steep cliffs everywhere except on the southern shoreline. Despite the northerly latitude, the climate is generally mild, because of the North Atlantic Current, which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico. Though treeless, the island's vegetation cover is rich, consisting of marshland, grass, and moss, and the island is home to many thousands of birds, especially puffins and arctic terns. Grímsey is a popular tourist destination for visitors who wish to experience the Arctic Circle. The island is served by regular ferry and aircraft passenger services from the mainland. The church on Grímsey was built from driftwood in 1867 and renovated in 1956. The island has acquired a long-standing reputation for being a bastion of chess-playing. On learning this, the American scholar and keen chess player Willard Fiske took a protective interest in Grímsey in the 1870s, sending supplies, supporting the economy and leaving money in his will, though he never once visited. Hurricane Sandy - waves in Fort Lauderdale
Hurricane Sandy is still south of Cuba but in Fort Lauderdale we're getting some winds, some rain and powerful surf and rip currents (video taken near Atlantic Blvd in Pompano Beach, just north of Fort Lauderdale). These waves are about the size you'd see in the north Atlantic - not here and they expect them to be HUGE tomorrow night (Thursday). I'll see if I can get some video then.
