Sampling Greenland: The Dark Snow Project
Project website darksnowproject.org Over the past decade, the Greenland ice sheet has been getting darker, and less reflective, absorbing more solar energy. This past summer a record breaking melt extended over the entire surface area of the ice sheet. Greenland expert Jason Box has been studying and publishing about this phenomenon, and has become concerned about the possible role of increasing wildfires worldwide, and increased darkening of the ice sheets. The only way to nail the science is to go to the top of the ice sheet and take samples - Dr Box, along with Bill Mckibben, and videographer Peter Sinclair, are kicking off the Dark Snow project to raise funds for for such an expedition, the first crowd-sourced scientific expedition to the arctic. Time Lapse Of Ice Sheet Melt In Greenland (1)
Despite the current and rapid melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet, it remains far from certain just when we will have reached a point when scientists will be able to predict its disappearance. Recent research conducted by the University of Copenhagen in conjunction with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Danish National Survey and Cadastre (KMS) and Aarhus University in collaboration with an international team of scientists reports that this is not the first time in recent history that the ice sheet has been in retreat and then stabilised again. The researchers' results have just been published in Science, the renowned American scientific journal. See the whole story here: ow.ly Credit: Gordon Hamilton, University of Maine

Polar Ice-Melt Causes Sea-Level Rise, Satellites Find | Video
Sifting data from 11 satellites, experts have determined that nearly a 1/2 inch (11mm) of sea level rise can be attributed to melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica since 1992 . This accounts for 20% of sea level rise during that period.

Day 1: Mission to Nome
After seven months supporting science missions in the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean, the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Healy began their long trip home to Seattle in late 2011. Their plan was to return home in time for the holiday season, but fate had something different in mind. An early storm disrupted a fuel delivery ship to the isolated town of Nome, Alaska, earlier that year. That followed by the Bering Sea freezing over earlier than normal, a potential fuel shortage was created. The crew of the cutter Healy was asked to return north, and this time to escort a fuel tanker through the rapidly thickening ice sheet. Healy headed to Nome, followed by the Russian tanker vessel Renda, assisting in the delivery of approximately 1.3 million gallons of fuel in late January. The important mission averted the potential energy crisis, and after breaking over 300 miles back out of the ice sheet both the Healy and Renda crews returned home. State of the Planet's Oceans Melting Greenland Ice Sheets Contribute to Global Sea Level Rise.mp4
On the Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier -- one of Greenland's largest ice fields -- scientists measure the movement of the ice sheet as it transports frozen water to the ocean. They discover that the speed of the glacier's march to the sea has tripled in just ten years. Alarm bells sound because at the current melt rate, within a few decades rising seas will have a profound effect on the low-lying countries of the world. Once considered an inexhaustible source of food, the oceans are now in danger of being significantly depleted. Matt Damon hosts "The State of the Planet's Oceans" as award-winning filmmakers Hal and Marilyn Weiner investigate the health and sustainability of the world's oceans and the issues affecting marine preserves, fisheries, and coastal ecosystems worldwide. * Learn more at: www.pbs.org -- OR -- www.screenscope.com The Greenland Ice Sheet in a Changing Climate http

Antarctic: Grand Canyon-sized rift 'speeding ice melt'
A rift in the Antarctic rock as deep as the Grand Canyon is increasing ice melt from the continent, researchers say. A UK team found the Ferrigno rift using ice-penetrating radar, and showed it to be about 1.5km (1 mile) deep. Antarctica is home to a geological rift system where new crust is being formed, meaning the eastern and western halves of the continent are slowly separating. The team writes in Nature journal that the canyon is bringing more warm sea water to the ice sheet, hastening melt. The Ferrigno rift lies close to the Pine Island Glacier where Nasa scientists found a giant crack last year; but the newly discovered feature is not thought to be influencing the "Pig", as it is known. The rift lies beneath the Ferrigno Ice Stream on a stretch of coast so remote that it has only been visited once previously. Continue reading the main story " Start Quote The geology and the present rate of ice loss are intricately linked" Prof David Vaughan BAS The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) project revisited the area two years ago in the person of Aberdeen University glaciologist Robert Bingham. The plan was to make ground observations that could link to the satellite data showing unexpectedly pronounced ice loss from the area. The team towed ice-penetrating radar kit behind a snowmobile, traversing a total of about 2500km (1500 miles). "What we found is that lying beneath the ice there is a large valley, parts of which are approximately a mile deeper than the surrounding ...

euronews science - British Antarctic team to search for new life in sub-glacial lake
www.euronews.com British scientists are due to begin drilling the ice sheet of Antarctica to reach a previously hidden lake. They hope a deep probe of Lake Ellsworth will reveal new forms of life kilometres beneath the ice. The team is attempting to cut through 3.2 kilometres of ice to the lake which has been cut off from the world for up to 500000 years. The 12-man team will melt a 36 centimetre-wide borehole using a specialised hot-water drill. By pumping 90000 litres of water through a continuous, 3.5 kilometre hose, the team is hoping to break through to the sub-glacial lake. Once through the ice, samples will be taken from the sludge on the lake bed, which could have been cut off from Earth's predominant evolutionary processes for millions of years. The scientist's team coordinator Chris Hill told Euronews: "What we actually find in the lake will be very interesting. We could find any number of orders of microbial life and that will be very interesting in itself. To find out how those microbes are surviving in such an extreme environment." The lake bed sediments have the potential to paint a picture of the history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in a way never seen before. The microbes that scientists will find could also hold clues as to the nature of the planet's past climate. And scientists add that if life can withstand even the deepest, darkest and most isolated conditions for thousands and thousands of years, then it has the ability to exist anywhere -- and by ...

CHASING ICE Trailer | TIFF New Release 2012
tiff.net This engrossing documentary follows National Geographic photojournalist James Balog as he struggles to bring dramatic visual evidence of climate change in the Arctic to the attention of the world. Following an eye-opening 2005 visit to Iceland, National Geographic photographer James Balog initiated an expedition called the Extreme Ice Survey, traversing the Arctic with a band of young adventurers and deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world's receding ice sheet. As the climate change debate polarizes America and natural disasters around the world intensify exponentially, Balog finds himself at the centre of a maelstrom and near the end of his tether as he struggles to make the world see what he has seen with his own (camera) eye. Chasing Ice is an engrossing chronicle of one man's quest to deliver crucial evidence, and hope, to our carbon-powered planet.

Greenland Ice Sheet Mass Changes (2003-2009) [720p]
The mass changes of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) are computed from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) inter-satellite range-rate observations for the period April 5, 2003 - July 25, 2009. The mass of the GIS has been computed at 10-day intervals and 200km spatial resolution from a regional high-resolution mascon solution (Luthcke and others, 2008 and 2006). The animation shows the change in mass referenced from April 5, 2003. The spatial variation in surface mass is shown in centimeters equivalent height of water. The time variation of the GIS mass is shown in the xy plot insert with units of Gigatons. credit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio source: svs.gsfc.nasa.gov
