Augustus: The Orphan Who Became Rome’s Most Powerful Emperor!
From a teenage orphan to the most powerful ruler in history, this is the incredible story of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. In 44 BCE, the assassination of Julius Caesar left Rome in chaos. But hidden within Caesar’s will was a shocking revelation—his adopted heir was not a battle-hardened general, but an 18-year-old named Octavian. This fast-paced documentary takes you through Augustus’ rise to power, from his cunning political maneuvers to the brutal Battle of Actium, where he crushed Antony and Cleopatra. Witness how he transformed a crumbling republic into the mighty Roman Empire, rul...

With no military experience and surrounded by enemies, Octavian played a brilliant game of strategy, forming alliances, outmaneuvering rivals like Mark Antony, and ultimately seizing control of Rome.
This fast-paced documentary takes you through Augustus’ rise to power, from his cunning political maneuvers to the brutal Battle of Actium, where he crushed Antony and Cleopatra. Witness how he transformed a crumbling republic into the mighty Roman Empire, ruling for over 40 years and ushering in the Pax Romana, a golden age of peace and prosperity.
But his reign wasn’t without struggle—betrayals, conspiracies, and personal heartbreak tested him at every turn. What made Augustus the greatest ruler in Roman history? How did he shape the world for centuries to come? Watch now to uncover the legend of Augustus, the man who built an empire that would last forever.

"Rubicon" and "Dynasty: Rise and Fall of the House of Caesar" by Tom Holland were both also very helpful here, and I highly-recommend them. I promise I wasn't lazy, I checked the work of Barry Strauss, which led me to the excellent "speech" "recorded" by Cassius Dio and Tacitus' interesting little remark about Octavia.
The Fall of the Roman Republic has always captured my imagination. I suppose it's the "characters". Cicero, Caesar, Antony, Sextus Pompey, Pompey Magnus, Crassus, Claudius Pulcher, and Octavian are all exceedingly-fascinating historical figures, and the way in which Greco-Roman historians wrote is very dramatic and fun to retell! I do not love Rome because I love marble, nor monuments, nor extensive borders on maps, but because I love a good story written well.
But I have moved away from the Roman Republic.
I don't want to say this is the last time I'll cover the subject, as I have one half-finished script which would be a proper send-off. If you ever see a video entitled, "The Last Act of Cicero", then you'll know I'm done. Out of all those characters, he is the one which has most captured my imagination. There is something about decent men in indecent times which makes my heart ache.
After my "last" Game of the Year I am hesitant to make further promises about the future of this channel. The whole "Egypt" project has been more of an obligation than a joy to make, but it has given me enough money to indulge in my less-profitable projects. All the same, I hope I delivered a sufficiently-enjoyable and thought-provoking product.
I always have a "big" video cooking. I can't wait to share it with you. I can, at the very least, promise that you'll see it before the end of the year.

Which celebrities are named after historical figures? In this video from History Calling we look at famous people with the same name from throughout history, some of whom you’ll have heard of and some not. Which famous father and son duo does Brad Pitt share his name with for instance? Who is the other Anne Hathaway and what links her to William Shakespeare? What is the original Tom Holland known for? What name do both a modern singer and a famed Roman general have and why do you have to be careful when you mention Steve McQueen that you clarify who you mean? All will be revealed in this video in which we’ll also look at the actress and the Tudor Queen with the same name, the Harry Potter/Home Alone director and the famous explorer both called Christopher Columbus and the TV personality (and ex-husband of Sandra Bullock) named after famous American outlaw, Jesse James.
Not all the celebs in this video were born with their famous monikers and I’ll also reveal which celebrities have changed their names to match their historical counterparts and which ones have altered their names so that they don’t match other famous figures. I hope you enjoy hearing about these famous name twins!

The Elizabeth Tower is the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London, England.[1] It contains the Great Clock, a striking clock with five bells.[2] The tower is nicknamed "Big Ben", a name which was originally applied only to the largest bell of the clock.[3] The tower was officially called the Clock Tower until 2012, when it was renamed to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.

The Gothic Revival tower was designed by Augustus Pugin in the Perpendicular style, and was completed in 1859. It is built of Anston limestone and is elaborately decorated with carvings related to the four nations of the United Kingdom, the Tudor dynasty, and a Latin inscription to Queen Victoria, in whose reign the palace was built.[4] The tower stands 96 metres (316 ft) tall, and the climb from ground level to the belfry is 334 steps. Its base is square, measuring 12 metres (40 ft) on each side. The dials of the clock are 6.9 metres (22.5 ft) in diameter.
The clock uses its original mechanism, and was the largest and most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world upon its completion.[5] It was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and George Airy, the Astronomer Royal, and constructed by Edward John Dent and Frederick Dent. It is known for its reliability, and can be adjusted by adding or removing pre-decimal pennies from the pendulum. The Great Bell was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and weighs 13.5 long tons (13.7 tonnes; 15.1 short tons).[6] Its nickname may be derived from Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw its installation, or heavyweight boxing champion Benjamin Caunt. There are four quarter bells, which chime on the quarter hours.
Big Ben is a British cultural icon. It is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and parliamentary democracy,[7] and it is often used in the establishing shot of films set in London.[8] The clock tower has been part of a Grade I listed building since 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.[9] The clock and tower were renovated between 2017 and 2021, during which the bells remained silent with few exceptions.[10]
