Sinking Sundarbans - Climate voices from India
www.greenpeace.org At the mouth of the Ganges River lies the Sundarbans - 20000 square kilometres of Unesco protected Mangrove forest stretching between India and Bangladesh. It is home to 500 endangered Bengali tigers, countless crocodiles and around 4.3 million people. Experiencing sea-level rise faster than any other place on Earth, these fragile islands are disappearing quickly. In last 20 years four islands have been submerged leaving 6000 families displaced. It is estimated that 30000 people will lose their homes by 2020 as 15 percent of the Sundarbans habitable land will be gone. Increased frequency and strength of tropical storms and higher tides are making the people of the Sundarbans victims of climate change. This is their story. Photographs by Peter Caton. Discover The World Biggest Mangrove Forest Sundarban. Part 01
The Sundarbans (Bengali: সুন্দরবন, Shundorbôn) is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world. The name Sundarban can be literally translated as "beautiful jungle" or "beautiful forest" in the Bengali language (Shundor, "beautiful" and bon, "forest" or "jungle"). The name may have been derived from the Sundari trees that are found in Sundarbans in large numbers. Alternatively, it has been proposed that the name is a corruption of Samudraban (Bengali: সমুদ্রবন Shomudrobôn "Sea Forest") or Chandra-bandhe (name of a primitive tribe). But the generally accepted view is the one associated with Sundari trees.[1] The forest lies in the vast delta on the Bay of Bengal formed by the super confluence of the Padma, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers across Saiyan southern Bangladesh. The seasonally-flooded Sundarbans freshwater swamp forests lie inland from the mangrove forests on the coastal fringe. The forest covers 10000 sq.km. of which about 6000 are in Bangladesh. It became inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997. The Sundarbans is estimated to be about 4110 km², of which about 1700 km² is occupied by waterbodies in the forms of river, canals and creeks of width varying from a few meters to several kilometers. The Sundarbans is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests. The interconnected network of waterways makes almost every corner of the forest ...

World's Largest Mangrove Forest : Sundarban
Sundarban is well known & famous for its Royal Bengal Tiger, but most of the people forget or don't even know that it's the world's largest mangrove forest, and not only that, the world's climate condition & its balance depends a lot upon this nature made mangrove forest. The lives over here, be it the wildlife or the human establishment, have been at continous threat, be it "Laila" the cyclone originated from Bay Of Bengal or the Tsunami. When I reached the forest, it was the full moon on 19th March 2011 commonly called as "the Supermoon" by the local people, and the water level almost washed the river banks (had risen about one & half feet more than usual). Although the necessary measures are being taken to preserve this largest nature made mangrove forest by "WWF" & other organisations, but general awarness & understanding & a true love in nature are mostly required.

Swamp Tigers from Sundarbans, Part 1/6
The Tiger (Panthera tigris), a member of the Felidae family, is the largest of the four „big cats" in the genus Panthera. Native to much of eastern and southern Asia, the tiger is an apex predator and an obligate carnivore. Reaching up to 3.3 metres (11 ft) in total length, weighing up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds), and having canines up to 4 inches long, the larger tiger subspecies are comparable in size to the biggest extinct felids. Aside from their great bulk and power, their most recognisable feature is a pattern of dark vertical stripes that overlays near-white to reddish-orange fur, with lighter underparts. The most numerous tiger subspecies is the Bengal tiger while the largest is the Siberian tiger. thanks to rc2wwe2010 allowing me to upload this documentary.
