Making of Holy River Ganga.wmv
The holiest of rivers reverend by all Hindus is Ganga - it emanates from Gaumukh (14 Kms. upstream of Gangotri) where it is known as Bhagirathi. Bhagirathi is named after King Bhagirath who brought down Ganga from the Heavens through penance to appease the souls of his kinsmen. Bhagirathi meanders down through Harsil, Uttarkashi, Chinayalisaur upto Dev Prayag where it merges with Alaknanda to from the Ganga River. The river Alaknanda emanates from Badrinath and is joined by various tributaries at Vishnu Prayag (here Dhauli Ganga meets Alaknanda), Nand Prayag (here Nanakini River from Nanda Devi mountain range joins Alaknanda), Karna Prayag (here Pidar Ganga from Pindari Glacier meets Alaknanda) and Rudraprayag (here the Mandakini River from Kedarnath joins Alaknanda) till the two rivers meet at Dev Prayag where from Ganga emanates. After running through the mountains, Ganga emerges into the plains below for the first time at Haridwar.
