Turkish minorities back constitutional change
Turkey goes to the polls on Sunday in a vote that will not only provide the country with a new government, but also a new constitution. Turkey is a country of some 74 million, 94 per cent of them Muslims, the rest are Turks of Jewish and Syrian origin, as well as a small Greek community. The largest minority grouping is the Turkish-Armenian community with a population of about 60000 mostly living in and around Istanbul. ... www.euronews.net

Interview with Abduhalim Dede, a Greek citizen and journalist from the Turkish minority in Greece
08.03.2009 In 1997, Abduhalim Dede, a Greek citizen and journalist from the Turkish minority was given a six-month suspended sentence for defamation of an ultra-nationalist activist from Thrace. He was charged in connection with an article published in Thraces Turkish minority newspaper Trakianin Sesi which dealt with a so-called parallel state, a veiled reference to a Mafia or police state in the sensitive zone of Komotini. Another common issue, provoking harassment of the journalists who do not share the dominant views on national matters is the subject of minorities in Greece. The dominant view in Greece supports the idea of an ethnically Greek State - homogenous in ethnicity and religion. The journalists who dare refer to the existence of ethnic minorities in the Greek State are confronted with suspicion and defamation. On 22 December 1998, in Skopje during an official visit to the Republic of Macedonia, the then Foreign Minister of Greece said that people who claim there is a Macedonian minority in Greece are pervert intellectuals and pervert journalists. On 11 January, on Antenna TV, he again denied the existence of a Macedonian minority adding that he forbids any discussion about it. Journalists who are members of the Turkish minority, which is officially recognized only as a Muslim minority, are subjected to serious harassment. On 10 October 1998, Lutfu Karakas of the Turkish Hurriyet Press Agency, a Turkish citizen, and Mucahit Dukkanci, a Greek citizen ...

Turkish Islamist Terrorist Incites Syrians to Slaughter Syria's Religious Minorities
This video footage shows a Turkish national inside Syria standing in front of a crowd while making a speech in broken formal Arabic. His rhetoric contains many religious references. He openly vows to slaughter non-Muslims in Syria, which includes Alawites and Shiites (Shias) whom these Sunni Wahhabi extremists consider as non-Muslim. He mentions that Christians and Jews specifically must be killed, and that their journey inside Syria will lead them to Jerusalem. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan must be proud of this guy, for the Turkish borders were intentionally opened to help the infiltration of such people into Syria.

- Fakhteh Zaman (Turkish-Azerbaijani Human Rights Director, Defence of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners in Iran (ADAPP)) - Heba El-Shazli (Regional Program Director for The Middle East) - Roya Boroumand (Executive Director Boroumand Foundation) Amnesty International - Public Statement - June 2006 Authorities should exercise restraint in policing Babek Castle gathering and address human rights violations against Iranian Azeri Turks As the annual Babek Castle cultural gathering of Iranian Azeri Turks approaches on 30 June 2006, Amnesty International is urging the Iranian authorities to exercise restraint while policing the gathering. In addition, it is calling on the authorities urgently to address increasing human rights violations being committed by Iranian security forces and others against members of Irans Azeri Turkish minority (who sometimes refer to themselves as Iranian Azerbaijanis) The largest ethnic minority in Iran, the Azeri Turkish community is believed to number between 25-30 percent of the total population and is found mainly in the north-west. Mostly Shia Muslims, like the majority of the population, they are not subject to as much discrimination as minorities of other religions, and are well-integrated into the economy. In recent years, however, they have increasingly called for greater cultural and linguistic rights, such as the right to be taught in Turkish and to celebrate Azerbaijani culture and history at events such as at the annual Babek Castle ...

UN-report: Greece must withdraw from dispute over existence of Macedonian minority
05.03.2009 An UN independent expert on minority issues urged Greece to focus on protecting the rights to self-identification and freedom of expression of the minorities. The UN independent expert Gay McDougall released a report after paying a visit to Greece on September 8-16, 2008. The principal recommendation included in the report reads that "Greece should withdraw from the dispute over whether there is a Macedonian or a Turkish minority on its territory and focus on protecting the rights to self-identification, freedom of expression and freedom of association of those communities." The report, which was conveyed Thursday by the party of Macedonians in Greece "Rainbow", adds that the rights of these communities to minority protections must be honored in accordance with the Declaration on Minorities and the core international human rights treaties. McDougall notes that in the 1920s and 30s, laws required the replacement of non-Greek names of towns, villages, rivers and mountains with Greek names. The family names of the Macedonian-speaking population were also required to be changed to Greek names. Community representatives note that traditional names continue to be in common usage and call for reinstatement and the official usage of a dual nomenclature. McDougall also noted the talks with Macedonians in Florina/ Lerin who have no right of assembly, though their organisation won in the 1980s a court decision in the International Court of Justice. "Greece is required to ...

Greece rejects UN report on ethnic minorities
07.03.2009 Greece claims it respects the rights of minorities, thus rejecting an UN report that urged the country not to debate on the existence of Macedonian or Turkish minority but to protect them. "Our positions are crystal clear and founded on absolute respect for human rights, a principle that applies to minorities and constitutes an accomplishment of the modern Greek Republic," Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Koumoutsakos said in a statement regarding the Report of the Independent UN Expert on Minority Issues. "In our country, every Greek citizen has the inalienable individual right to self determination, while the States active concern with the strengthening and the protection of human rights is continuous and effective," foreign ministry's spokesman is quoted by Makfax news agency. "This policy is founded on our firm conviction that the mechanisms for protection and strengthening of human rights should ultimately contribute to the harmonic coexistence of a countrys citizens. Therefore these mechanisms should not be transformed, directly or indirectly, into an opportunity or alibi for some that consciously attempt to exploit them for their own purposes on the level of interstate relations." "Also, they should not become a tool in the hands of some who, for their own ends, seek the cultivation of division and a climate of tension within a society, Koumoutsakos said. Greece will present its positions in detail next Tuesday, at the Human Rights Council in Geneva ...

Racism and Intolerance in Bulgaria2
World is watching... Ethnic clashes in Bulgaria leave five injured 26 september 2011 Five people, including three police officers, have been hurt in clashes between Bulgarians and members of the Roma community. The fighting broke out in the village of Kanunitsa 160Km south of the capital Sofia. Tensions in Bulgaria's Plovdiv The tensions in the Roma-populated districts in Bulgaria's Plovdiv have subsided Sunday night after a rumor has been exposed as false, according to local media. Reports say, the tension in the Roma quarters in Plovdiv was generated by two Roma clans that are close to Rashkov by spreading the rumor that a local Roma man was murdered in downtown Plovdiv, and that activists of the nationalist party VMRO were preparing to set a local mosque on fire. Bulgaria is racist and intolerant nation. A 19 year old man, who was killed by Roma boss was a criminal too. He had dirty dealings with Roma boss. That is why he ordered to kill him. Racist Bulgarians used this incident to justify their thirst? for Romani blood and apart from attacking Roma boss, they are also trying to attack innocent Roma, who have nothing to do with this incident. Shame on you Bulgarians. World is watching... Racism in Europe Bulgaria Racism in Bulgaria has been geared towards the Romani people who are perceived to be of different racial and ethnic background. However, not all Bulgarians are racist towards the Roma, and it varies with an individual's upbringing, education, area where they ...

23/03/2007 Australian first Kurdish Film Festival - Part 1
special thanks to Dr. kamal / twana nwri /devrim cilik / Faiq aziz / institute for kurdish study in Australia. twana nwri Kurdish Cinema: In Search of Cultural Identity By Dr Muhammad Kamal. Senior Lecturer, Asia Institute, University of Melbourne The Kurds make the largest ethnic community in the Middle East without a state of their own. Their history is a chain of unsuccessful uprisings for independence. It tells about genocide, forcible assimilation, deportation and life in exile. After the defeat of the Ottomans in 1918, the British forces occupied almost all of present day Middle East. Woodrow Wilson in his Fourteen Point Program for World Peace (point 12) stated that non-Turkish minorities of the Ottoman Empire should be 'assured of an absolute unmolested opportunity of autonomous development.' The Treaty of Sevres signed in August 1920 gave a great hope to the Kurds and brought them closer to statehood. But the peace conference at Lausanne in November 1922, which was finalized in treaty in July 1923 disappointed the Kurdish delegation. The defeated Turkey secured a position to impose demands on the conference and categorically rejected the recognition of the national rights of the Kurds. The Allies satisfied with their own gains were happy to please Turkey for two reasons; first, Mustafa Kamal who emerged as a leader advocated the idea of westernizing Turkey and second the Allies wanted from Turkey to block the influence of Soviet Marxism in the region. In March ...
