Last night, 1st December marked the first Saturday night of summer. For many partygoers, summer marks the start of fun and celebrations with their friends and family. What many don't realise or know about is the alcohol and drug fuelled violence that fills the streets of the central business district every weekend. Last night was a fairly ordinary night for police and paramedics with the occasional brawl, drug overdose and assault. With emergency service resources stretched to the limit caring for young men and women who simply overdo it, it seems the safety messages NSW police attempt to get across "Play safe, stay safe" is simply being ignored. Every year and every summer it seems the cycle repeats itself. Too much alcohol, no self-control and a night which ends with a friend or loved one connected to life support. Last night had no fatal assaults, however one male was seriously injured after being struck in the head at Central Railway Station. Another young female was covered in blood after a brawl in Cockle Bay wharf. Although the scars from the assaults may heal, psychological damage may be long lasting. Parents should be aware that these types of incidents happen every weekend almost on cue and Dr Gordian Fulde, head of St Vincent's hospital emergency has made many pleas to youngsters and their parents to take care in the city.
