7 Ways To Ruin A Technological Revolution
Google Tech Talks December 18, 2006 ABSTRACT If you wanted to undermine the technological revolution of the last 30 years, using the law, how would you do it? How would you undercut the virtuous cycle that results from access to an open network, force technological innovation into stagnation, diminish competition, create monopolies over the basic building blocks of knowledge? How many of those things are we doing now? James Boyle is William Neal Reynolds Professor of Law at Duke Law School, the founder of the Center for the Study of the Public Domain, and a Board Member of Creative Commons. He is also a columnist for the Financial Times New Technology Policy Forum. His most recent books were...

David Graeber: On Bureaucratic Technologies & the Future as Dream-Time / 01.19.2012 @ SVA
The twentieth century produced a very clear sense of what the future was to be, but we now seem unable to imagine any sort of redemptive future. How did this happen? One reason is the replacement of what might be called poetic technologies with bureaucratic technologies. Another is the terminal perturbations of capitalism, which is increasingly unable to envision any future at all. David Graeber likes to say that he had three goals for 2011: to promote his new book, Debt: The First 5000 Years (Melville House), learn to drive, and launch a worldwide revolution. He's done well on the first, failed the second, and the third may be on the way, in the form of the Occupy Wall Street movement that Graeber helped initiate. He teaches anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London, and is also the author of Towards an Anthropological Theory of Value, Lost People: Magic and the Legacy of Slavery in Madagascar, Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology, and Direct Action: An Ethnography, among other books. David Graeber gave this talk in the School of Visual Arts theater on 19 January 2012 at 7. "Shedding Some Light" on Lighting Technologies
When it comes to lighting technology, there's a new Sheriff in town. It comes in the form of high power, energy efficient, durable, and digitally-regulated LEDs. This technology has revolutionized portable lighting technologies and will continue to do so. Really even talking about this lighting creates a snapshot in time and ephemeral data point as the mentioned lights, like the excellent Fenix L2D Q5, will eventually be eclipsed. But rest assured that even at this current technological point, these lights can revolutionize your systems. Whether you're a cop, civilian sheepdog, soldier, professional or private pilot, prepared homeowner, mountain biker, or medical professional, I think a reliable and bright light is paramount to your system. Today's LED flashlights, like the L2D 2AA version shown, has impressive brightness levels, multi-mode technology, incredible versatility, and offer all of this in compact and lightweight 3.2 ounce form factors. As mentioned in the vid, expect such a light to effectively replace a lantern, headlamp, bike light, traffic wand, and pen light. They can do it all those tasks at a reasonably cost and do so reliably year after year. Not one to adopt technology just for its current "coolness," magazine or forum popularity, an item has to prove itself as "system changing" for it to be attractive to me. When we "shed some light" on the new LED lighting products, they indeed do just that.

Ray Kurzweil on Singularity 1 on 1
www.singularityweblog.com Ray Kurzweil's impact on my life in general but especially on what I have been doing for the past 3 or 4 years is hard to exaggerate. It is a simple fact that, if I haven't read his seminal book The Singularity is Near, I would be neither blogging nor podcasting about exponential technologies, not to mention going to Singularity University. And so it was with great excitement and some trepidation that I went to interview Dr. Kurzweil in his office in Boston. Part of my trepidation came from some technical concerns: I wish I could buy a better camera. I wish I could hire a team of audio and video professionals so that I can focus on the interview itself. I wish I did a better job with the set up. I wish I had noticed that Ray's lavalier mic has slipped out of its holder... The list is exponential. Still, if there is one thing that I've learned since I started podcasting is that we do get better. But it takes time. Meanwhile, my consolation is that eventually I will have to do another interview with Ray Kurweil just so I get it right that time. For now, however, I hope that the content will make up for the technical deficiencies. During our conversation with Dr. Kurzweil we cover a wide variety of topics such as: how and why at age 5 Ray decided to become an inventor; his unique background of being born to Jewish parents but brought up in a Unitarian Church; his early interest in issues such as religious tolerance, poverty, social inequality and ...

"Technological Threat" animation short 1988 Academy Award nominee
My friend Brian Jennings made this animation short with Bill Kroyer in 1988. They were nominated for best animation short. Unfortunately the award went to Pixar for Tin Toy. I like how technological threat contrasts the replacement with the work force by having the Dweeds replace the wolves at their desks. Much like how 3D computer animation took over old fashioned hand drawn 2D animation.

Star Wars: The Holiday Special Part VI
The Star Wars Holiday Special is a 1978 TV movie set in the Star Wars galaxy. The main storyline of the film transpires on the Wookiee home planet of Kashyyyk. Chewbacca and Han Solo visit the planet to celebrate the Wookiee holiday Life Day with his family, which includes his wife Malla, his son Lumpy and his father Itchy. As Chewbacca and Han are known Rebel agents, they are pursued by the Galactic Empire, who in the process invade Chewbacca's household. The plot is strung together by a series of musical numbers, celebrity appearances, and other variety-show acts, including songs and comedy routines by such 1970s celebrities as Jefferson Starship, Diahann Carroll, Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and Beatrice Arthur. Star Wars creator George Lucas's involvement in the special's production was limited, and he was unhappy with the final product. As a result, it has never been re-aired in the US or been officially released on home video, but has been widely bootlegged by fans. The Holiday Special is important for being the first film-length Star Wars story to appear following the release of the original Star Wars, for featuring cameos by all of that film's major cast, and for introducing the character Boba Fett. Cast Mark Hamill .... Luke Skywalker Harrison Ford .... Han Solo Carrie Fisher .... Princess Leia Anthony Daniels .... C-3PO Peter Mayhew .... Chewbacca James Earl Jones ....
