the Low Countries a historical atlas in motion
The developement of the Low or Benelux countries from 1543 to the present depicted in a moving historical atlas. Green stands for the Habsburg Netherlands (later reduced to the Southern Netherlands) and modern Belgium. Orange stands for the rebelious Union of Utrecht that developed into the Dutch Republic or United Provinces, later the Batavian Republic (1795-1805), the Kingdom of Holland (1805-1810), the Sovereign Principality of the United Netherlands (1813-1815) that in 1815 became the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The red borderline is the border of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (until 1806) and later the border of the German Confederation (1815-1866).

Dutch nobles handed in the Supplication of the Nobles (Smeekschrift der Edelen). After this the prosecutions were halted. The Protestants started with Hedge-Preaches (Hagenpreken) what followed by the Iconoclastic Fury (Beeldenstorm). Phillips II sent Duke Alva (known as Iron Alva) to restore order. Many people fled the Low Countries. One of them was William of...

Countries below the sea level || Benelux Nations ||Low Countries || Video 1
Low Countries, also called Benelux countries, coastal region of northwestern Europe, consisting of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. These are together known as the Benelux countries, from the initial letters of their names. The Low Countries are bordered by Germany to the east and France to the south. In 1947 the three nations formed the Benelux Customs Union, which broadened over the years into what a 1960 treaty confirmed as the Benelux Economic Union.

This was known as the Spanish Fury (Spaanse Furie). With the Pacification of Ghent (Pacificatie van Gent) were the Dutch provinces (Catholic or Protestant) united themselves against Spanish aggression. What followed was the Act of Abjuration (Plakkaat van Verlatinghe). In 1588 the Dutch Republic (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden) was established.
