This particular upload is from an older CD. I had this insanely rare 78, but it - along with 11 of my other 78's - was, essentially, destroyed - a grim discovery I made just a few weeks ago. But, I had to include it, as pure, riding swing and abandon rarely gets any better than this. I originally traded half the farm to get this scarce 78 because this version is - by FAR - the best cut Fletcher ever did of "Sugar Foot Stomp". From Rex Stewart's smoking mute solo to John Kirby's room-filling bass riding the band on a wave, it hits you square in the chest. I think in hearing it, you'll agree wholeheartedly. What a ride here!!!!!

Connie's Inn was a popular nightclub located in New York City. It was a segregated club where Whites came to be entertained by Black performers. The club was owned by the brothers Connie and George Immerman and the famous gangster Dutch Schultz was rumored to be a silent partner in the operation. The Fletcher Henderson Orchestra was the most popular African-American band of the 1920s. The smooth, carefully arranged sound of Henderson's orchestra was a huge influence on the Swing style of the next decade. The Orchestra played at the Club Alabam on West 44th Street in New York from 1922 to July of 1924 and then moved to the Roseland Ballroom when Armand J. Piron's Orchestra vacated the job and returned to New Orleans. In 1924 Henderson hired Louis Armstrong to replace Joe Smith on trumpet. Armstrong's thirteen months in the band caused quite a stir among New York Jazz musicians who had never heard anything like him. The orchestra also featured Coleman Hawkins on tenor saxophone, Buster Bailey on clarinet and Don Redman on alto saxophone and also contributing arrangements. The orchestra recorded with dozens of record companies under a number of different names and pseudonyms including Henderson's Dance Orchestra, Henderson's Club Alabam Orchestra, The Dixie Stompers, Henderson's Happy Six Orchestra, Fletcher Henderson and his Sawin' Six, Louisiana Stompers and the Connie's Inn Orchestra. In 1929 the band travelled to Philadelphia to play the music in a musical revue called "Horseshoes". During rehearsals for the show a dispute over White musicians' role in the production fractured the band and half of the orchestra quit. Donald Matthew Redman (July 29,1900 - Nov.30,1964) was an American jazz musician, arranger, and composer. Redman was born in Piedmont, West Virginia. His father was a music teacher, his mother was a singer. Don began playing the trumpet at the age of 3, joined his first band at 6 and by age 12 he was proficient on all wind instruments ranging from trumpet to oboe as well as piano. He studied at Storer's College in Harper's Ferry and at the Boston Conservatory, then joined Billy Page's Broadway Syncopaters in New York City. In 1922 Don Redman joined the Fletcher Henderson orchestra, mostly playing clarinet and saxophones. He soon began assisting in writing arrangements, and Redman did much to formulate the sound that was to become big band Swing. In 1927 Jean Goldkette convinced Redman to join the Detroit, Michigan-based band McKinney's Cotton Pickers as their Musical Director and Leader. He was responsible for their great success and arranged about half of their music . Redman was occasionally featured as their vocalist, displaying his charming, humorous vocal style. He was often known as "Smack" Henderson. His band circa 1925 included Howard Scott, Coleman Hawkins (who started with Henderson in 1923 playing the low tuba parts on bass saxophone and quickly moved to tenor and a leading solo role), Louis Armstrong, Charlie Dixon, Kaiser Marshall, Buster Bailey, Elmer Chambers, Charlie Green, Ralph Escudero and Don Redman. In 1922 he formed his own band, which was resident first at the Club Alabam then at the Roseland, and quickly became known as the best Afro-American band in New York. Wilbur C. Sweatman (Feb.7,1882 - March 9,1961) Usually credited with having the first organized Dance Band (1912). He is now mainly remembered as the composer of Boogie Rag, Old Folks Rag, and Down Home Rag Wilbur was taught piano by his sister (pianist) and was self taught on violin and clarinet. Early in his career, he played in a circus band as well as with "Mahara's Minstrels". in 1902, Sweatman was leading a dance band in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and, in either 1902 or perhaps 1903, made his first recordings on phonograph cylinders. He wrote a number of rags during this period. About 1910, found him working in Chicago, as musical director for various theatres. In 1912, He led the Wilbur C. Sweatman Band at the Pekin Theatre. Chicago, IL. In 1913, Sweatman moved to New York where he became close friends with Scott Joplin. Later, Joplin, in his will, named Sweatman as executor of his estate. In New York, Sweatman enjoyed popularity with both White and Black audiences, and started issuing recordings in 1916 for Emerson Records, then for Pathé. Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901 at New Orleans, Louisiana to "William Armstrong", a laborer in a turpentine factory and "Mary Albert", a part-time prostitute. Louis's father abandoned his mother, Mayann, soon after he was born. Louis spent the first years of his life in his grandmother's home. Eventually, he was returned to his mother and his little sister Beatrice. By age seven, Louis had already begun to work. As a boy, his most memorable working experiences was working for the Karnofsky family, who helped him buy his first cornet. His first formal training in music, however, was not from the Karnofsky family. At age 11 he was arrested for firing a pistol in public on New Year's Eve and was sentenced to the Colored Waifs' Home for Boys. There he learned how to play the cornet and became a member of the facility's band. After being released at age fourteen, he largely supported himself as a musician, playing with pick-up bands and in small clubs with his mentor Joe "King" Oliver. He didn't own an instrument at this time, but continued to listen to bands at clubs like the Funky Butt Hall. Joe was one of a handful of noted musicians in New Orleans along with "Jelly Roll Morton", and "Sidney Bechet". Honeysuckle Rose is a 1928 song composed by Fats Waller, with lyrics written by Andy Razaf. Honeysuckle Rose was introduced as a dance number in the 1929 revue, Load of Coal, at Connies Inn in Harlem by Fats Waller. Honeysuckle Rose and Aint Misbehavin, also written that year for the musical revue Hot Chocolates, would become the two most enduring compositions born of the longtime collaboration of Waller and Razaf.

Wilbur C. Sweatman (Brunswick, Missouri, February 7, 1882 - New York City, March 9, 1961) was an African-American ragtime and dixieland jazz composer, bandleader, and clarinetist. Sweatman started out playing violin, then took up clarinet instead. He toured with circus bands in the late 1890s, and briefly played with the bands of WC Handy and Mahara's Minstrels before organizing his own dance band in Minneapolis, Minnesota by late 1902. It was there that Sweatman made his first recordings on phonograph cylinders in 1903 for a local music store. These included what is reputed to have been the first recorded version of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag"; no copies of these are known to exist today. In 1908, Sweatman moved to Chicago. He became the bandleader at the Grand Theater, and began to attract notice; a 1910 article referred to his nickname, "Sensational Swet." By 1911, he had moved to the vaudeville circuit full-time, developing a successful act of playing three clarinets at once. An Indianapolis account described his performance there: "Though somewhat diminutive in stature, Wilbur C. Sweatman has a style and grace of manner in all of his executions that is at once convincing, and the soulfulness of expression that he blends into his tones is something wonderful. The Boswell parents first settled in Kansas City, where Martha was born in 1905 and Connie in 1907. Helvetia was born in 1911 in Birmingham, Alabama. Connie was involved in an accident that permanently injured her spine. As David McCain tells it, some kids put her in a coaster wagon that went down a hill and hit a telephone pole. Connie was thrown out. At first, she couldn't move at all. These were the days when infantile paralysis was a major threat and through the years it was reported that polio was the cause of Connie's disability. In 1914 the family moved to New Orleans. Father Alfred Boswell, a one time circus performer, was appointed manager of the New Orleans branch of the Fleischman Yeast Company. After Connie's accident, her mother focused on what other family members recall as a natural musical talent. "I couldn't play hopscotch," Connie said in a magazine interview, "so Mom started me on cello." The other girls moved quickly into music as well. All three were trained in the classics by a German music professor in New Orleans, Otto Finck.
