Bomber Boys - BBC Documentary.
Brothers Colin and Ewan McGregor follow up their documentary The Battle of Britain with a film exploring Bomber Command, a rarely-told story from the Second World War. The film focuses primarily on the men who fought and died in the skies above occupied Europe, with numerous examples of individual heroism and extraordinary collective spirit, and Colin learns to fly the key aircraft of the campaign: the Lancaster bomber. But this is also the story of a controversy that has lasted almost 70 years. The programme covers six years of wartime operations, and traces the obstacles and challenges that were overcome as the RAF developed and deployed the awesome fighting force that was Bomber Command.

H57RC Bomber Command Memorial March 14, 2012.wmv
In 1997, a Halifax Bomber, LW682, was recovered in Belgium by Halifax 57 Rescue Canada and BAHA. The severely damage aircraft was recovered from a bog and only a few items from the plane remained intact. This Standard video version tells the story of how the aircraft was then melted down into 1600 pounds of ingots and stored for 15 years at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton, Alberta. On May 14, 2012, we recorded this footage about the magnificent Bomber Command Memorial which is presently being built in Green Park, London. This footage will be part of a special documenatary about the project. A Dunrobincastle.com Internet Video

Aussie Lancaster crews swoop into IWM Duxford on eve of Bomber Command unveiling
Wing Commander Ralph Tyrrell MBE visited IWM Duxford on the eve of the unveiling of the £6m memorial to the 55573 airmen of Bomber Command who died during World War II (Its disgraceful that somebody has given this video a dislike, would a patriot like to give a few likes to counteract that dreadful cretin) He was delighted to meet a party of Australian vets who had volunteered to serve with Bomber Command, and in particular the three Aussies he spoke to recorded on film in this brief encounter at a NAAFI canteen. I can only identify the Aussie vet on the left of Ralph who is Arthur Edwin Loudon DFM. He enlisted in the RAAF in January 1943 at the age of 20 and was posted to the UK where he served as a navigator with No12 Squadron at RAF Wickenby, Lincs Arthur flew 30 operations and has too many memories to recount and was awarded the DFM in 1945 for oustanding ability as a navigator on ops. He and his wife, a former WAAF, whom he met while training in the UK, have raised a large family Down Under. The following day Ralph and the party from Down Under attended the ceremony in London's Green Park. Chief of the Air Staff Sir Stephen Dalton said Bomber Command's "service and raw courage" had been recognised. Some 6000 veterans and families of the deceased watched a Lancaster bomber drop thousands of poppies in a flypast. Criticism of large-scale area bombing by the RAF near the end of WWII had stalled plans for a memorial for years. Veterans from Australia, New Zealand, Canada ...

RAF Bomber Command navigator Ralph Tyrell pays tribute beside Lancaster at IWM Duxford
RAF navigator Ralph Tyrrell MBE visited IWM Duxford on the eve of the unveiling of the £6m memorial to the 55573 airmen of Bomber Command who died during the last war. Its disgraceful that somebody has given this video a dislike, would a patriot like to give a few likes to counteract that dreadful cretin? Ralph, a former Flying Officer, was re-united with a Lancaster, the type he few on |fear-filled tours across to Nazi occupied Europe, including the Dresden raid. He for the first time on film, Ralph tells of his missions and pays tribute not only of his fallen collegues, but the unsung heroes who kept their planes flying, the ground crews. Since the war Ralph has been helping Chelmsford's Wings Appeal. At 18 he was a founder member of the city's air cadets and was once president of its Royal Air Forces Association. A Squadron Leader through his long association with the cadets, Ralph made his "last trip" to see the country's second 'airwothy' Lancaster Just Jane, near his wartime base in Lincolnshire two years ago and took a taxi run in her. "I realise I am getting too old for long-distance trips," he said afterwards. But, back in 1945, he made an incredible 80 return flights of 1600 miles over Nazi Germany -- including the 1000-bomber raid on Dresden that February. "When we first arrived at the squadron other flyers said to us, 'You've got six weeks to live,'" he recalled. "I was bomb aimer, lying on a sheet of plywood fitted into a quarter-inch-thick Perspex blister ...

Bomber Command Honoured
The first national memorial dedicated to more than 50000 fallen personnel from World War 2's Bomber Command has being unveiled. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh attended the ceremony in London's Green Park, which culminated in a poppy drop from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Some 55573 airmen were killed during the Second World War bombing raids, close to half the number who served in Bomber Command. In 1940, Winston Churchill said: "The fighters are our salvation but the bombers alone provide the means of victory." But there had never been a national memorial dedicated to them and Churchill barely made reference to Bomber Command in his VE Day address. Bomber Command veteran Dennis Wiltshire's frustration at the lack of recognition for his fallen colleagues is still evident. He said: "I am quite disgusted we have had to wait 70 years for it. I think it is terrible." For him, one thought governed all: it was them or us. "You don't even think about who's down there, you're just looking after yourself," explained Mr Wiltshire. "But since I've come home it's been quite different. I've thought a lot about it. But then on the other hand he came over here and did the same to our families." The lack of recognition or campaign medal for Bomber Command stems from tactics used under the Command of Arthur "Bomber" Harris - cities and its civilians were regular targets. Critics argue the memorial is ostentatious and recognises tactics which resulted in the death of hundreds of ...
