Athena (Preview Clip)
Jane Powell and Debbie Reynolds head the cast of this underrated MGM musical gem, a true original whose book and score were written specifically for this film, and not adapted from a literary or stage source. A staid society lawyer (Edmund Purdom) and his singing sensation pal (Vic Damone) get corralled by a pair of sibling scions (Powell & Reynolds) from an extended family of fitness fanatics. Found amidst the crew of bodybuilders and gymnasts that make up the clan is a young Steve Reeves, who would soon star in a Herculean string of sword and sandal epics. Overlooked since its original release, the film boasts a gorgeous original score of songs written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane (MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS). Their dazzling score shines as never before in the Warner Archive Collection's new DVD presentation, boasting its first-ever presentation with STEREO AUDIO. SPECIAL FEATURES: 3 Never-Before-Seen Outtake Musical Numbers including "Imagine (Second Reprise)" with Vic Damone and Debbie Reynolds and "Love Can Change the Stars (Duet Reprise)" with Jane Powell and Edmund Purdom, and the COMPETITION dance sequence with Powell, Reynolds and their 'sisters'; Original Theatrical Trailer 16x9 WIDESCREEN, FULL STEREO REMIX.

Loulie Jean Norman sings Vocalise by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane
Here is a rare video I put together of Hugh's dear friend Loulie Jean singing a song from the motion picture Athena-1954 starring Debbie Reynolds, Jane Powell, Vic Damone and Edward Purdom. Loulie Jean grew up with Hugh Martin (Hugh wrote the score to Meet Me in St. Louis for Judy Garland) and became one of the most well known background singers in Hollywood. She passed in 2005 at the age of 92.

Jane Powell - Daughter of the Regiment
Go figure? Linda Christian, wife of Tyrone Power, appeared to have issues with Jane Powell! Jane had the pipes, and handsome Edmund Purdom. All in fun, but tiny Jane's voice really rips it all up! Thank God; she's still singing! Wondering how long it might take for this clip to appear on another YT site! RIP Magnificent Dick Dubois. Mr America 1954. 1933-2007
Richard DuBois was one of the most popular of the bodybuilders, during the golden age of physique photography, the 1950s. He was one of the best built and most handsome men from the era. He was born in the Bronx, New York City, on 4th March 1933, to a poor family. When his father died while Richard was very young, he was sent to a New York City orphanage, as his mother could not support the boy. He left the orphanage at age 16, and took up swimming, boxing, and weight training as a hobby. This quickly developed into more than a hobby, and in 1952 he moved to California to pursue acting and bodybuilding professionally. This he did with an incredible will and determination, and with his handsome face, magnificent physique, and sunny optimism, he seemed destined to have success. Success came in a role in a MGM musical in 1954, 'Athena'. He starred (using his stage name Richard Sabre) with Debbie Reynolds and Steve Reeves. That same year, he won the title of Mr America. He was by this stage one of the most photographed stars of the physique world. His face appeared in advertisements and on billboards across America. Bob Mizer of Physique Pictorial fame declared Richard DuBois to be a most delightful young man to work with, with his "million dollar smile", easy going nature, and enthusiasm for life in general. Richard DuBois was chosen to tour with Mae West, appearing across the nation in her stage show. In 1957, he won the title of Mr USA. Despite his success and fame, he ...

Richard DuBois. Mr America 1954. In memory.
Richard DuBois was one of the best built and most handsome of the physique stars from what is now called the golden age of bodybuilding in America, the 1950s. He was born on March 4th 1933, into a poor family in the Bronx, New York City. While he was still a child, his father died suddenly, and his mother found herself unable to support her son. He was to spend part of his childhood in a New York City orphanage. When he left the orphanage at age 16, he took up boxing and swimming, and began to train with weights. He moved to California in 1952 to pursue bodybuilding and acting. This he did with a devotion that was astounding. He landed a part in the 1954 MGM musical 'Athena', starring (using his stage name Richard Sabre) alongside Debbie Reynolds and Steve Reeves. Richard DuBois won the title of Mr America in 1954. He was now one of the most photographed of the physique stars, and one of the most liked. With his handsome face, impressive build, and sunny disposition, he was destined for greatness. Bob Mizer, of Physique Pictorial fame, found DuBois to be a delightfully enthusiastic young man to work with. Many magazine writers were to refer to the "million dollar smile" that Richard DuBois had. He was chosen by Mae West to tour as one of her on-stage musclemen, and was to spend several months on her tour around the USA. He won the title of Mr USA in 1957. Despite all the success that he was having, DuBois yearned for deeper, spiritual meaning in his life, and eventually ...
