Aberconwy (district)

The Borough of Aberconwy was one of five districts of Gwynedd, north-west Wales, from 1974 to 1996.
It was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, on April 1, 1974 from parts of the administrative counties of Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire.
From Caernarfonshire came the municipal borough of Conwy, the urban districts of Betws-y-Coed, Llandudno, Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr, and Nant Conwy Rural District.
From Denbighshire came the urban district of Llanrwst, and the parishes of Eglwysbach, Llanddoged, Llanrwst Rural, Llansantffraid Glan Conwy and Tir Ifan. The parishes had been part of the rural districts of Aled and Hiraethog.
The district was abolished in 1996, with its area passing to Aberconwy and Colwyn, shortly afterwards renamed Conwy County Borough. However, some council services are still split into Aberconwy and Colwyn districts such as the registration of births, deaths and marriages.
In 2003, the area of the former district was moved from the preserved county of Gwynedd, to Clwyd.

Anglesey
Anglesey /ˈæŋɡəlsi/ (Welsh: Ynys Môn) [ˈənɨs ˈmoːn], is an island and, as Isle of Anglesey, a county off the north west coast of Wales. Two bridges, spanning the Menai Strait, connect it to the mainland: the original Menai Suspension Bridge (carrying the A5), designed by Thomas Telford in 1826; and the more recently rebuilt Britannia Bridge (replacing the original designed by Robert Stephenson), which carries the A55 and the North Wales Coast Railway Line. Historian and author John Davies argues that it was during the tumultuous 10th century that the Norse name for Môn, Anglesey, came into existence; the name was later adopted into English after Anglo-Norman occupiers arrived to conquer the island during the Norman invasions of Gwynedd.
The name Anglesey was later used in the English language as a county name which included Holy Island and other nearby small islands. About half of the inhabitants can speak, read and write Welsh as well as English, and 70% have a knowledge of Welsh. Once the Welsh language was granted equal status in government with the Welsh Language Act of 1993, the representative constituency names for the island were changed to the Welsh name of the island, Ynys Môn (UK Parliament constituency) in the UK parliament, and Ynys Môn (Assembly constituency) in the National Assembly for Wales. With an area of 714 square kilometres (276 sq mi), Anglesey is the largest Welsh island, the sixth largest surrounding the island of Great Britain, and the largest island in the Irish Sea ahead of the Isle of Man.

Berwyn range
The Berwyn range (Welsh: Y Berwyn or Mynydd y Berwyn) is an isolated and sparsely populated area of moorland located in the north-east of Wales, roughly bounded by Llangollen in the north-east, Corwen in the north-west, Bala in the south-west, and Oswestry in the south-east.
The Berwyn range also played its part in causing King Henry II of England to turn back during his invasion of Gwynedd in 1165. Rather than taking the usual route along the northern coastal plain, his army invaded from Oswestry and took a route over the Berwyns. The English invasion faced an alliance of Welsh princes led by King Owain Gwynedd, but there was little fighting - endless days of heavy rain forced the army to retreat.
The area is wild and largely vegetated by heather about one metre thick, with some acidic grassland and bracken. It is not very popular for hill-walking or scrambling since the peaks are lower than those in nearby Snowdonia. However, the topmost peaks are rugged and have a distinctive character well worth exploring. Nearby towns include Llangollen and Corwen, which are popular tourist destinations.

Betws Gwerfil Goch

Betws Gwerfil Goch (Standard Welsh: Betws Gwerful Goch) is a village and community in Denbighshire, Wales. It has a population of 362. Until 1974 it was part of Edeirnion Rural District in Meirionnydd, and was transferred to Glyndŵr District in Clwyd by the Local Government Act 1972. It became part of Denbighshire in 1996.

Bodelwyddan Castle
Bodelwyddan Castle, close to the village of Bodelwyddan, near Rhyl, Denbighshire in Wales, was built around 1460 by the Humphreys family of Anglesey as a manor house. Its most important association was with the Williams-Wynn family, which extended for around 200 years from 1690. It is now a Grade II* Listed Building.
The castle was bought from the Humphreys by Sir William Williams, Speaker in the House of Commons from 1680-1681. The castle which stands today was reconstructed between 1830 and 1852 by Sir John Hay Williams, who employed the architects Joseph Hansom (inventor of the Hansom cab) and Edward Welch to refurbish and extend the house, though the Williams' family fortunes had started to decline since the 1850s, due to the loss of the main source of income for the estate, lead mining. The castle has been described as one of Hansom's most ambitious projects, "being wildly dramatic and owing nothing to its predecessors". At the same time works were carried out to construct an estate wall and formal gardens.

Bodfari is a village in Denbighshire, Wales.
Bodfari is located at approximate grid reference SJ093701. The village lies on the A541 road at the point where the road passes through a gap in the Clwydian Hills, the gap being part of the valley of the River Wheeler (Welsh: Afon Chwiler).
The Offa's Dyke National Trail passes through the village, and for walkers completing the trail south to north, Bodfari is usually the final overnight stop on the 177 mile route.

A small town until the early 19th century, its prominence as a major port for the transport of coal following the arrival of industry in the region contributed to its rise as a major city.

Carmarthenshire
Carmarthenshire (Welsh: Sir Gaerfyrddin or Sir Gâr) is a unitary authority in the south west of Wales and one of thirteen historic counties. It is the third largest in Wales. The three largest towns are Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford. The county town and administrative centre of Carmarthenshire is Carmarthen and the most populous settlement is the area in and around the town of Llanelli.

Carmarthenshire became an administrative county with a county council taking over functions from the Quarter Sessions under the Local Government Act 1888. Under the Local Government Act 1972, the administrative county of Carmarthenshire was abolished on 1 April 1974 and the area of Carmarthenshire became three districts within the new county of Dyfed : Carmarthen, Dinefwr and Llanelli. Under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, Dyfed was abolished on 1 April 1996 and the three districts united to form a unitary authority which had the same boundaries as the original Carmarthenshire. In 2003, following a local campaign, the Clunderwen community council area was transferred to Pembrokeshire.

Carrog

Carrog is a village in Denbighshire, Wales. Formerly referred to as Llansanffraid-Glyn Dyfrdwy, as it lies within the parish of Llansanffraid Glyndyfrdwy, it takes its modern name from the Great Western Railway station on the opposite bank of the River Dee, which in turn took its name (possibly to avoid confusion with the adjacent Glyn Dyfrdwy station and that in Llansanffraid Glan Conwy) from the Carrog estate on that bank.
Carrog Station is now part of the Llangollen Railway and is currently one end of the line, until the extension to Bonwm is opened. One notable resident is Peredur Lynch who graduated from Bangor University to become a literary historian. Carrog has one primary school, Ysgol Carrog which is over 100 years old.

Ceredigion
Ceredigion (Welsh pronunciation: [kɛrɛˈdɪɡjɔn]) is a county and former kingdom in mid-west Wales. As Cardiganshire (Welsh: Sir Aberteifi), it was created in 1282, and was reconstituted as a county under that name in 1996, reverting to Ceredigion a day later. In extent the current county is more or less identical to the historic county.
In pre-Roman, and possibly Roman times, a part of southern Ceredigion was in the territory of the Demetae and possibly part of that of the Ordovices. According to Nennius, a 10th-century Welsh chronicler, Ceredig, son of the Welsh invader Cunedda, settled in the area in the 5th century. It remained a kingdom ruled by his descendants until it expanded and changed its name, first to Seisyllwg in the late 7th century and, after the union of Seisyllwg with the Kingdom of Dyfed, it was incorporated into Deheubarth in the mid 10th century.
In 1282, Edward I of England conquered the principality of Wales and divided the area into counties. The name Cardigan was an Anglicisation of the name for the historic kingdom of Ceredigion. One of thirteen traditional counties in Wales, Cardiganshire was also a vice-county. Cardiganshire was split into the five hundreds (administrative area) of Genau'r-Glyn, Ilar, Moyddyn, Penarth and Troedyraur. The area of the county became a district of Wales under the name Ceredigion in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and, since 1996, has formed the county of Ceredigion.

Cerrigydrudion

Cerrigydrudion (or Cerrig-y-drudion) is a village and its surrounding parish in Conwy County Borough, Wales. Previously it was part of the historic county of Denbighshire (pre 1974) and then Clwyd. The village formerly lay on the A5, but a short by-pass now takes the road along the south-western edge of the village. Prior to the by-pass being built, Cerrig-y-Drudion was the highest point on the A5 between London and Holyhead.
Geographically the area is classed as moorland and less favourable grassland. It is on the outskirts of Mynydd Hiraethog. The oldest feature of the village is the parish church dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. It is believed to have existed in 440 AD. It is also mentioned in the 'Norwich Taxation' of 1254. The village is the largest in the area known as Uwchaled which also includes Llangwm, Pentrefoelas, Pentre-llyn-cymer, Dinmael, Glasfryn, Cefn Brith, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr and Cwm Penanner. Llangwm and Pentrefoelas are stand-alone parishes whilst the remainder fall within the parish of Cerrig-y-drudion. However, there are multiple Nonconformist chapels throughout the area of Uwchaled, located in many of the minor villages and hamlets.

Clwyd
Clwyd (Welsh pronunciation: [ˈklʊɨd]) is a preserved county of Wales, situated in the north-east, bordering England with Cheshire to its east, Shropshire to the south-east, and the Welsh counties of Gwynedd to its immediate west and Powys to the south. It additionally shares a maritime border with the metropolitan county of Merseyside along the River Dee. Between 1974 and 1996, it was a county with a county council, and it was divided into six districts. It is named after the River Clwyd, which runs through the region. It was also a Royal Mail postal county before the postal county scheme was abolished in 1996. Clwyd County Council was based in the county town of Mold.
From the late 1950s, the radical reform of local government in Wales was considered more pressing than that in England, due to the small size of many of the existing authorities, especially the upper tier county councils. The Local Government Commission for Wales set up in 1958 was the first to recommend wholesale amalgamation of the administrative counties outside Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, with extensive boundary changes; however the then Minister of Housing and Local Government Sir Keith Joseph decided not to accept the report, noting that county amalgamations in England had been highly unpopular when proposed.

Clwydian Range
The Clwydian Range (Welsh: Bryniau Clwyd) is a series of hills and mountains in north east Wales that runs from Llandegla in the south to Prestatyn in the north, with the highest point being the popular Moel Famau. The range is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The summits of these hills provide extensive views across north Wales, to the high peaks of Snowdonia, eastwards across the Cheshire Plain, Peak District and towards Manchester and Liverpool to the northeast. The AONB is to be extended to include the Dee Valley around Llangollen and Horseshoe Pass.
The Clwydian Hills are formed from an upstanding block of Silurian age sandstones, mudstones and siltstones. The range's rocks are intensely faulted; the major Vale of Clwyd Fault is responsible for the impressive west-facing scarp of the Clwydian Range. It downthrows the rocks to the west and separates the younger Carboniferous and Permo-Triassic rocks of the Vale of Clwyd from those of the hills.
The range includes a number of hills possessing Iron Age hill forts, including (from the north) Y Foel (Moel Hiraddug), Moel-y-gaer, Penycloddiau, Moel Arthur, a second Moel y Gaer and Foel Fenlli. There are, as with many places in the west of Britain, a number of legends associated with King Arthur surrounding these hills.

Denbighshire
Denbighshire (Welsh: Sir Ddinbych) is a county in north-east Wales. It is named after the historic county of Denbighshire, but has substantially different borders. Denbighshire has the distinction of being the oldest inhabited part of Wales. Pontnewydd (Bontnewydd-Llanelwy) Palaeolithic site has remains of Neanderthals from 225,000 years ago. There are several castles in the region- Denbigh Castle, Rhuddlan Castle, Ruthin Castle, Castell Dinas Bran and Bodelwyddan Castle.
The present principal area was formed on April 1, 1996, under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, from various parts of the county of Clwyd. It included the district of Rhuddlan (which was formed in 1974 entirely from Flintshire), the communities of Trefnant and Cefn Meiriadog from the district of Colwyn (which was entirely Denbighshire) and most of the Glyndŵr district. The part of the Glyndŵr district included the entirety of the former Edeyrnion Rural District, which was part of the administrative county of Merionethshire prior to 1974 – which covered the parishes of Betws Gwerfil Goch, Corwen, Gwyddelwern, Llangar, Llandrillo yn Edeirnion and Llansanffraid.

Derwen
Derwen is a rural village in the south of Denbighshire, Wales. It lies approximately half way between Corwen and Ruthin, in the upper part of Dyffryn Clwyd ond the north side of the River Clwyd, opposite the village of Brynsaithmarchog.

Glyndyfrdwy
Glyndyfrdwy (Welsh pronunciation: [ɡlɨnˈdəvrdʊɨ]), or sometimes Glyn Dyfrdwy, is a village in the modern county of Denbighshire, Wales. It is situated on the A5 road half way between Corwen and Llangollen in the Dee Valley (Afon Dyfrdwy).
Historically, it is renowned for its association with Owain Glyndŵr. Near this village, at his manor of Glyndyfrdwy, Owain Glyndŵr (the Baron of Glyndyfrdwy) proclaimed himself Prince of Wales on 16 September 1400, so beginning his fourteen year rebellion against English rule.
The eroded remains of a 12th century castle motte, known locally at Owain Glyndŵr's Mount, was built to command the route through the Dee Valley. Owain's manor is likely to have been in the square moated area across a nearby field. This would have been defended by a water-filled moat, a palisade and gate.
The site was devastated by Harry of Monmouth, English Prince of Wales, and later to become King Henry V and his forces in 1403.
In the Owain Glyndwr Memorial Hall are artifacts associated with the man himself; a copy of the Pennal Letter to King Charles VI of France, a document ratifying the terms of a 1404 Treaty agreed between Owain and the French in 1405, a letter confirming the appointments of Owain's Chancellor, Gruffydd Young and Owain's brother-in-law, John Hanmer as Ambassadors to the French Court, pictures of the Parliament house in Dolgellau, a portrait drawn from Owain's seal, and a replica of this seal.

Glyndŵr was one of six districts of Clwyd between 1974 and 1996.
It was formed on April 1, 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, from parts of the administrative counties of Denbighshire and Merionethshire.
From Denbighshire came the boroughs of Denbigh, Llangollen and Ruthin, the rural districts of Ceiriog and Ruthin and the parishes of Llangollen Rural and Llantysilio, formerly in Wrexham Rural District. From Merionethshire came the Edeyrnion Rural District.
The district was named after Owain Glyndŵr, who lived in Glyndyfrdwy for a while.
On April 1, 1996 the district was dissolved, with parts going to each of the three principal areas of Denbighshire, Powys and Wrexham.
Wrexham is home to the main campus of Glyndŵr University (formerly the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education).

Gwyddelwern

Gwyddelwern is a small village and community of 508 residents, situated approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Corwen in Denbighshire in Wales. Historically the village was part of the Edeirnion district of Meirionnydd. Edeirnion was part of the Glyndŵr district of Clwyd from 1974 to 1996, when the area became part of the principal area of Denbighshire. The village straddles the A494 road (trunk road).
The name is often "poetically", but incorrectly, translated as The Irishman's Alder Grove. Gwyddel being Irishman, wern usually referring to a damp or swampy area arising from run-off from surrounding hills. However, the name is derived from gwyddeli, meaning thickets, hence the correct translation would be alder marsh in the thickets. In colloquial speech the village is often referred to simply as Gwyddel.
The outlook to the west of the village is dominated by the hills Mynydd-Rhŷd-Ddu and Bryn Gwenallt. To the south the view extends over the Dee Valley to the Berwyn Mountains and Arenig Fawr near Bala.

Gwynedd
Gwynedd (Welsh pronunciation: [ˈɡwɨ̞nɛð]) is an area in north-west Wales, named after the old Kingdom of Gwynedd. As a local government area it is the second biggest in terms of geographical area and also one of the most sparsely populated. A large proportion of the population is Welsh-speaking. Henllan
Henllan is a village in Denbighshire, Wales with a population of approximately 750 (OfNS/2004) and lies in the countryside, approximately 2.25 miles north-west of the walled-town of Denbigh.
Henllan is well known locally for its unusual parish church with the tower built separated from the main building, on a rocky mound in a far corner of the churchyard. It has been suggested that this was to increase area in which the bells could be heard, as the parish was quite large.
Saint Sadwrn's church forms part of the Benefice of Henllan, which includes the parishes of Henllan, Bylchau and Gwytherin.
The village's only pub is believed to be one of the oldest in Wales. The Llindir Inn is a 13th century partially thatched building, and is well known for its ghost. Dewi Roberts, in his book The Old Villages of Denbighshire and Flintshire, writes how pub-goers have seen 'an attractive woman in white' (described elsewhere as a woman in blue). She's believed to have been married to a sailor, and while he was away at sea, she found herself a lover. One winter night her husband took unexpected shore leave, and caught them both in flagrante delicto. He murdered his wife, and from that moment on, a number of people claim to have seen her. The story attracted so much attention, that it was even part of a television programme back in the sixties. Like all ghost stories, however, there are inaccuracies, and local legend has it that only females are able to see the ghost, known as Sylvia. She also appears only in the upstairs part of the pub and on cold frosty nights.

The village, considered the capital of the commote of Iâl (Yale)—the "fertile hill country"—grew up around a religious community dedicated to St. Germanus of Auxerre (St. Garmon in the Welsh language). Pilgrims travelling to St Garmon's shrine, which contained an image of the saint reputed to have miraculous properties, probably financed the construction of the impressive church of St. Garmon, dating from the 13th century.

The village is named after Saint Tecla, the patron saint of the village and parish church: Llandegla-yn-Iâl can be translated as "St Tecla's church in [the district of] Yale". Iâl - later the Hundred of Yale - was a district whose name means "the fertile hill country"; it was formerly a lordship (or commote under the medieval Welsh system of administration) granted by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, the king of Powys, to Llewelyn Aurdorchog.
The estate of Plas yn Iâl in the village was the seat of the Iâl family, whose most well-known member is Elihu Yale, a governor of the British East India Company. Elihu made a substantial gift towards the founding of an educational institution in New Haven, Connecticut. This led to the college being named Yale College, now Yale University.

Llandyrnog is a large village in Denbighshire, Wales lying in the valley of the River Clwyd, about 3 miles (4.8 km) from Denbigh and 5 miles (8.0 km) from Ruthin.
Llandyrnog has a local church—St. Tyrnog's—and a small Welsh-speaking chapel. There are also two pub restaurants, The Kinmel Arms and The White Horse and a pub, the Golden Lion. In the heart of the village there is also a small butchers shop and a Post Office. Llandyrnog also has a small primary school teaching through the medium of English. The former Chest Hospital, 1 mile (1.6 km) away at Llangwyfan, is now a residential centre for adults with learning disabilities.
The main employer is the ACC Llandyrnog Creamery on the outskirts of the village, which mostly produces hard pressed and cheddar cheese.
The village has good road links to Denbigh and the main A541 road at Bodfari, and is served by buses number 76 and 53.
Llandyrnog has a Glasgow Rangers Supporters Club, Llandyrnog RSC, which meets for all away games in the Golden Lion public house. It is the only registered Glasgow Rangers Supporters Club in North Wales.

Llanelidan
Llanelidan is a small village in the county of Denbighshire in north-east Wales.
It is located just off the A494 road between Ruthin and Corwen in the Vale of Clwyd.
Also accessible from the A5104 road when driving between Llandegla towards Carrog.
It has a 15th century parish church dedicated to St. Elidan, with services held on a fortnightly basis. the village also boasts a picturesque village pub, called The Leyland Arms, which is open most days and evenings service home made food and a selection of beverages. The village holds regular quizzes during the winter months in the pub as well as a very popular village fair during the summer.
The church, village hall and pub all lie within 200 yards of each other overlooking the village cricket ground and quaint pavilion.
In December 1873, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield designed an early version of lawn tennis — which he called sphairistike (Greek: σφάίρίστική, meaning "skill at playing at ball"), and was soon known simply as "sticky" — for the amusement of his guests at a garden party on his estate of Nantclwyd, in Llanelidan.

The village lies on the eastern slopes of the Clwydian Hills, just south of Moel Famau, and is wholly within the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.Offa's Dyke National Trail passes one mile to the southwest of the village. The Parish or Community Council of Llanferres area includes the village of Maeshafn and hamlets of Tafarn-y-Gelyn and Loggerheads.
The parish church, which is dedicated to St. Berres, was mentioned in the 'Lincoln Taxation' of 1291. It was largely rebuilt in 1774/1775, with additions in 1843. There were further additions, and a major restoration, in 1892.
Saint Berres, (with variations such as Brice or Britius) was a 4th century to 5th century Welsh hermit, who according to Thomas Pennant was a disciple of St. Martin of Tours, the Hungarian.

Llangedwyn
Llangedwyn is a village in Powys, Wales.
It lies in the Tanat Valley near to the Wales/England border. It is approximately five miles from the small town of Llanfyllin and ten miles from the Shropshire market town of Oswestry. The Berwyn mountain range is nearby, as is Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall. The ruins of Owain Glyndŵr's Sycharth castle lie a few miles outside the village towards Llansilin.

Llangollen takes its name from Saint Collen (from the Welsh llan meaning 'church' or 'saint' or perhaps 'holy') and Collen, a 6th century monk who founded a church beside the river there. St Collen is said to have arrived in Llangollen by coracle. As there are no other churches in Wales dedicated to St. Collen, it is possible that this St. Collen may also have connections in both Colan, Cornwall and Langolen, Brittany.
Standing high above the town to the north is Castell Dinas Bran, the former stronghold of the Princes of Powys. Beyond the castle is the limestone escarpment known as the Eglwyseg Rocks. The outcrop continues north to the area known as World's End. The area nearest to the castle is the Panorama Walk, and a monument to local poet I.D. Hooson (from the nearby village of Rhosllanerchrugog) can be found there.

Llansilin
Llansilin is a village and local government community in Powys, Wales, about 6 miles west of Oswestry. The community, which includes Llansilin village, a large rural area and the hamlets of Molfre and Rhiwlas as well as the remote parish of Llangadwaladr, had a population of 648 at the 2001 census.
The church in Llansilin is dedicated to Saint Silin. The earliest part of the present building dates from the thirteenth century, although there had been a church on the site from much earlier times. Much of the present building dates from the early 15th Century. The wooden spire was destroyed by fire, and the present tower was built in 1832. There was a major restoration during 1889/1890, and the church was re-opened in June, 1890.
The church was in Denbighshire until 1974; and in Clwyd from 1974 until 1996.

Llanychan
Llanychan is a parish near Llandyrnog, Denbighshire, Wales. The parish consists of 567 acres (2.29 km2), and is the smallest parish in the diocese of St Asaph. The parish stands approximately three miles north-east of Ruthin.
There are only two churches in Wales consecrated to Sanit Hychan, Llanychan church, after which the parish is named, is one of these. The church is mentioned to in the Norwich Tax Records in 1254. Notabel features include a window dating from 1626, a reading desk from 1730 and a reredos from 1846, the church was restored extensively in 1878.

The current administrative area of the Merthyr County Borough consists of the northern part of the Taff Valley and the smaller neighbouring Taff Bargoed Valley.
According to legend, the town is named after Saint Tydfil, a daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog. According to her legend she was slain at Merthyr by pagans around 480; the place was subsequently named Merthyr Tydfil in her honour. Although the usual meaning of the word merthyr (from the Latin martyrium) in modern Welsh is 'martyr', it is probable that the meaning here is "church (in memory of a saint or on his/her grave)." Similar examples, all from south Wales, include Merthyr Cynog, Merthyr Dyfan and Merthyr Mawr. The Cornish and Breton language equivalents, in place names, are merther and merzher.

Monmouthshire
Monmouthshire (Welsh: Sir Fynwy) is a county in south east Wales. The name derives from the historic county of Monmouthshire of which it covers the eastern 60%. The largest town is Abergavenny. Other major towns include Caldicot, Chepstow and Monmouth.
The historic county of Monmouthshire was formed from the Welsh Marches by the Laws in Wales Act 1535, bordering Gloucestershire to the east, Herefordshire to the northeast, Brecknockshire to the north, and Glamorgan to the west. The second Laws in Wales Act of 1542 enumerated the counties of Wales and excluded Monmouthshire – This led to ambiguity as to whether the county was part of Wales or England. Since local government changes in April 1974 the area has been placed definitively in Wales. The eastern and southern boundaries of the historic county and the current principal area are the same, along the River Wye and Severn estuary; however, the western two-fifths of the historic county are now administered by the other unitary authorities of Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Caerphilly and Newport. The administrative county of Monmouthshire, and associated lieutenancy were abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. The area largely became part of the new local government and ceremonial county of Gwent.

Mynydd Hiraethog
Mynydd Hiraethog (also known as the Denbigh Moors) is an upland region in Conwy and Denbighshire in north-east Wales. It includes the large reservoir Llyn Brenig and the Clocaenog Forest, which has one of Wales's last populations of red squirrels. Its highest point is Mwdwl-eithin, at 532 metres (1,745 ft) above sea level, making it higher than Exmoor. On its western edge, overlooking the Conwy Valley, lies the Moel Maelogan wind farm.

Nantglyn
Nantglyn is a small village in Denbighshire, Wales. It is situated in a picturesque rural location about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) away from the nearest town, Denbigh. There are several other small villages in the area.
While there are now no shops remaining in Nantglyn, it previously maintained a blacksmith's forge, a post office, a pub and a leather-craft shop that also sold candles (located in the old smithy). There was also a local infant / junior school, but a decline in the number of pupils led to its closure in the 1990s. A memorial to the fallen of the two World Wars sits at the centre of the village.
The parish church is dedicated to St James. It is probably quite old but was extensively renovated in 1777 and again in Victorian times. A notable feature of its churchyard is the "pulpit in a tree" built into an ancient yew. Tradition has it that it was used by John Wesley to preach from during the 18th century, although it would seem unlikely that a Methodist minister would be allowed to preach in an Anglican churchyard. There were also several Nonconformist chapels in the village, including Capel-y-Waen (Waen Nantglyn is a secondary settlement about a mile northwest of the main village), Capel Soar and Capel Salem.

Neath Port Talbot (Welsh: Castell-nedd Port Talbot) is a county borough and one of the unitary authority areas of Wales. Neath Port Talbot is the 8th most populous county in Wales and the third most populous county borough.

The largest town is Neath with a population of 47,020, followed by Port Talbot (35,633), Briton Ferry (7,186), Pontardawe (5,035), and Glynneath (4,368). The majority of the population live in the coastal plane around Port Talbot and the land around the River Neath in the vicinity of Neath.

Newport
Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd) is a city and unitary authority in south east Wales. It is located on the River Usk close to its confluence with the Severn estuary, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Cardiff. It is the third largest city in Wales, with a population of 141,300 (2007 estimate).
Newport has been a port since medieval times, when a castle was built by the Normans. The town outgrew the earlier Roman town of Caerleon, immediately upstream, and gained its first charter in 1314. Until the rise of Cardiff from the 1850s, Newport was Wales' largest coal-exporting port. During the 20th century, the docks declined in importance, but Newport remained an important manufacturing and engineering centre. It was granted city status in 2002. It is the home of the University of Wales, Newport, and the Newport Gwent Dragons rugby union regional team, and hosted the Ryder Cup in 2010.

To the west is the suburb of Kinmel Bay, with the resort of Towyn further west, Prestatyn to the east and Rhuddlan to the south. At the 2001 Census, Rhyl had a population of 24,889. The conurbation of Abergele-Rhyl-Prestatyn has a population of over 60,000.
Rhyl has long been a popular tourist destination for people all over Wales and North West England. Rhyl is accessible by road, rail, air via Liverpool Airport, and sea via Holyhead.
Once an elegant Victorian resort, there was an influx of people from Liverpool and Manchester after World War II changing the face of the town. The area had declined dramatically by 1990, but has since improved due to a series of regeneration projects bringing in major investment. European funding, secured by the Welsh Government, has produced millions for the development of Rhyl's seafront.

Located around a hill in the southern part of the Vale of Clwyd - the older part of the town, the castle and Saint Peter's Square are located on top of the hill, while many newer parts of the town are on the floodplain of the River Clwyd (which became apparent on several occasions in the late 1990s—new flood control works costing £3 million were inaugurated in autumn 2003). Ruthin also has villages on the outskirts of the town such as Pwllglas and Rhewl.
The name 'Ruthin' comes from the Welsh words rhudd (red) and din (fort), and refers to the colour of the new red sandstone which forms the geologic basis of the area, and from which the castle was constructed in 1277-1284. The original name of Rhuthin was 'Castell Coch yng Ngwern-fôr' (red castle in the sea-swamps).
The population at the 2001 Census was 5,218 of whom 47% were male and 53% female. The average age of the population was 43.0 years and the population is 98.2% "white".

Swansea is thought to have originally developed as a Viking trading post. Some think that its name is derived from Sveinn's island (Old Norse: Sveinsey) – the reference to an island may refer to a bank at the mouth of the river Tawe, or perhaps an area of raised ground in marshes. An alternative explanation is that the name derives from the Norse name 'Sweyn' and 'ey', which can mean inlet. The name is pronounced Swans-y /ˈswɒnzi/), not Swan-sea. The Welsh name first appears in Welsh poems at the beginning of the 13th century, as "Aber Tawy".

Welsh language author and polemicist Emrys ap Iwan was a minister at Trefnant at the end of the 19th century.
Trefnant railway station served the village. It closed in the 1960s.
Trefnant used to have a football team called Trefnant Village FC. They dropped out of the Clwyd League due to a cash crisis. They have a Summer league team which won the first summer title in 1927 and they last won a trophy in 2004, the shield, beating Henllan in the final.

Trelawnyd
Trelawnyd (formerly Newmarket from 1710 to 1954) is a village in Flintshire.
Trelawnyd is one of Flintshire's ancient parishes, originally part of Dyserth parish. It became a separate parish between 1254 and 1291, and included the townships of Gop, Graig, Pentreffyddion and Rhydlyfnwyd.
The village was renamed Newmarket in 1710 by John Wynne who obtained a faculty from the Bishops Registry. Wynne had by then redeveloped much of the village, established several industries, a weekly market, and an annual fair, in an attempt to turn Newmarket into the area's market town. The plan failed as nearby Rhyl developed into the larger market town. The village was officially renamed Trelawnyd, meaning "Town full of wheat" in Welsh, in 1954.
In March 1933, 35 villagers formed a choir (Côr Meibion Trelawnyd) to compete at the village Eisteddfod. Within a few months, it grew to 50 members, and has progressed to world renown with circa 100 members in 2010.
In 1957, under conductor Neville Owen, a local schoolmaster, they won the National championships which were held at Bala.

Tremeirchion

Tremeirchion (previously known as 'Lleweni) is a small residential community in Denbighshire, Wales. It is located on the B5429 road, to the north east of Denbigh and to the west of St Asaph.
The town was part of the traditional lands of the Salusbury family and the Cotton Baronets. It was dominated by these two families until the early part of the twentieth century. It briefly became well known during the fin de siècle after a series of dinosaur bones were found in the area. The town does not possess a shop or any other commercial activity although one pub, the Salusbury Arms, operates daily with the exception of Sunday.
In the 2001 Census, Tremeirchion Ward had a population of 1,589 people, although the civil parish figure for the community was 636. Residents in this community had a median household income of £32,400 as of 2006, and 8.9% of residents claimed some sort of disability payment from the government. As of 2001, 2.64% of residents were immigrants.

The Vale of Glamorgan (Welsh: Bro Morgannwg [ˈbroː mɔrˈɡanʊɡ]) is a county borough in Wales; an exceptionally rich agricultural area, it lies in the southern part of Glamorgan, South Wales. It has a rugged coastline, but its rolling countryside is quite atypical of Wales as a whole.

Chris Ruane
Christopher Shaun Ruane (born 18 July 1958) is a Welsh Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Vale of Clwyd since 1997.
Ruane attended Ysgol Mair Roman Catholic primary school in Rhyl. He then went to the Blessed Edward Jones RC High School (three years above Carol Vorderman) on Cefndy Road in Rhyl, Denbighshire. At the University of Wales College, Aberystwyth, he gained a BSc in Economics in 1979. From the University of Liverpool he gained a PGCE in 1980. He was a town councillor from 1988 and the Chairman of West Clwyd NUT region.
He was a primary school teacher from 1982–97, and a deputy head from 1991-7.
He contested Clwyd North West in 1992.
He was the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Peter Hain from 2003 until his resignation in March 2007 in protest against the decision to replace Trident. [1]
He married Gill Roberts on February 14, 1994 in Rhuddlan, Denbighshire. They have two daughters (born November 1994 and October 1998).

Karen Sinclair
Karen Sinclair AM (born 20 November 1952) is a Welsh Labour politician, who has represented the constituency of Clwyd South since the National Assembly for Wales was established in 1999. Born and brought up in Wrexham, north Wales, Sinclair has lived in Llangollen for over twenty years.

Susan Jones
Susan Elan Jones (born 1 June 1968) is a British Labour Party politician, who was elected at the 2010 general election as the Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, replacing the previous Labour MP Martyn Jones on his retirement.
Jones comes from Ponciau near Rhosllannerchrugog and studied at Bristol University and Cardiff University. She worked as a fundraiser for charities for 15 years before becoming an MP.
In the 1997 general election, Jones stood for Labour in Surrey Heath, coming third. From 2006 to 2009 she was a councillor in the London Borough of Southwark and was deputy leader of the opposition from 2007 to 2009.
Jones is fluent in Welsh, and took her Parliamentary Oath of Allegiance in Welsh. She has actively supported Welsh language issues, writing in one article: "I would contend that for a Labour supporter being actively pro-Welsh language is a natural part of our DNA, as much as supporting public services, tackling low pay or taking on any other equalities cause".
When making her maiden speech in the House of Commons on 9 June 2010 Jones spoke of the historic discrimination faced by speakers of the Welsh language. In her speech, she compared the ordinary people who campaigned for the Welsh language at times when it had not been fashionable to do so as civil rights activists "in the mould of Mrs Rosa Parks".

Extract : I am indebted to the courtesy of the Rev. RO Williams, MA, Vicar ofHolywell, for the following singular testimony to Fairy dancing. The writer was the Rev. Dr. Edward Williams, at one time of Oswestry, andafterwards Principal of the Independent Academy at Rotherham in=Yorkshire, who was born at Glan Clwyd, Bodfari, Nov. 14th, 1750, and died March 9, 1813. The extract is to be seen in the autobiography of Dr.Williams, which has been published, but the quotation now given is copied from the doctor's own handwriting, which now lies before me. " It may be stated that Mr. Wirt Sikes, in his British Goblins, refers to the Dwarfs of Cae Caled, Bodfari, as Knockers, but he was not justified,as will be seen from the extract, in thus describing them. For the sake of reference the incident shall be called--The Elf Dancers of Cae Caled."

Denbighshire (Welsh: Sir Ddinbych) is a county in north-east Wales. It is named after the historic county of Denbighshire, but has substantially different borders. Denbighshire has the distinction of being the oldest inhabited part of Wales. Pontnewydd (Bontnewydd-Llanelwy) Palaeolithic site has remains of Neanderthals from 225,000 years ago. There are several castles in the region- Denbigh Castle, Rhuddlan Castle, Ruthin Castle, Castell Dinas Bran and Bodelwyddan Castle.

Formation[link]
The present principal area was formed on April 1, 1996, under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, from various parts of the county of Clwyd. It included the district of Rhuddlan (which was formed in 1974 entirely from Flintshire), the communities of Trefnant and Cefn Meiriadog from the district of Colwyn (which was entirely Denbighshire) and most of the Glyndŵr district. The part of the Glyndŵr district included the entirety of the former Edeyrnion Rural District, which was part of the administrative county of Merionethshire prior to 1974 – which covered the parishes of Betws Gwerfil Goch, Corwen, Gwyddelwern, Llangar, Llandrillo yn Edeirnion and Llansanffraid.
Other principal areas containing part of historic Denbighshire are Conwy, which picked up the remainder of the 1974–1996 Colwyn, and also the Denbighshire parts of the 1974–1996 Aberconwy, and Wrexham, which corresponds to the pre-1974 borough of Wrexham along with most of the Wrexham Rural District and also several parishes from Glyndŵr.
The post-1996 Powys includes the historic Denbighshire parishes of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llansilin and Llangedwyn, which had formed part of Glyndŵr district.

The area is mostly hilly moorland, with the Clwydian Range in the east, the Hiraethog Moors (Mynydd Hiraethog) in the west and the Berwyn range adjacent to the southern boundary. The broad, fertile Vale of Clwyd runs south to north in the centre, and there is a narrow coastal plain in the north. Average temperatures are 2°C in January and 19°C in July.

Denbighshire's total population at the United Kingdom Census 2001 was 93,065, with the largest towns on the coast at Rhyl (pop. c.25,000) and Prestatyn (pop. c.18,000). The inland towns are much smaller, Denbigh having a population of 8,500, Ruthin 5,000, and Llangollen 3,300. 28% of the population speaks Welsh, mainly in the upland area and the Vale of Clwyd.
Economy[link]
There are no heavy industrial sites in the county although most of the towns have small industrial parks or estates for light industry, the economy of the area being based on agriculture and tourism. A large proportion of the working population is employed in service industries in the service sector. The uplands support the rearing of sheep and beef cattle, while in the Vale of Clwyd dairy farming and the growing of wheat and barley crops predominates.
On November 19, 2004, Denbighshire was granted Fairtrade County status.
Denbighshire is home to Wales largest Medieval Festival, staged annually over the second weekend in August at Bodelwyddan Castle. It attracts re-enactment groups from all over the country.[citation needed]
