Two soldiers loyal to junta chief Capt. Amadou Sanogo load their weapons, including a machine gun, onto a taxi which they hailed while returning on foot from the parachutists military camp, where junta soldiers took control in fighting against anti-junta forces, in Bamako, Mali, Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Gunfire echoed across the capital Tuesday as Malian government troops battled each other, killing at least 12 people as one side tried to oust soldiers who seized power in a coup over a month ago. Mali's coup leaders, who ostensibly handed over power to an interim civilian government on April 12 but who still wield power, said they control the state broadcaster, the airport and a military base, fending off attacks by opposing forces. Sanogo told a private radio station Monday night that the countercoup had failed and that his soldiers have captured foreign fighters.

Iran has stepped up its military and financial aid to the Syrian government, departing US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has warned. Mrs Clinton, who steps down on Thursday, said there were also signs that Russia continues to supply Syria with money and "equipment". A spilling-over of the conflict into neighbouring countries was "within the realm of the possible now", she said. Her comments came amid contradictory claims of an Israeli strike in Syria. The Syrian army said Israeli war planes had bombed a military research centre north-west of Damascus, but the US and others said lorries carrying weapons bound for Lebanon were hit. Israel has maintained silence about the incident, but Syria has made a formal complaint to UN, saying it reserves the right to defend itself. Meanwhile, Russia and Iran have strongly denounced the attack. 'Lethal civil war' In her final press interview as US Secretary of State, Mrs Clinton said one of Iran's "highest priorities" was keeping Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in power". "We believe they have acted on that by sending in more personnel, not only to help Assad, but to support and advise military security forces," she told reporters. Mrs Clinton added that Iran had increased the quality of its arms sent to Syria because "Assad is using up his weaponry". She expressed similar concerns with regards to Russia's involvement in the conflict. "We have reason to believe that the Russians continue to supply financial and military assistance ...

Caleb Moore - professional snowmobiler has died from injuries he sustained during a horrific crash during the Aspen X Games last week. Caleb Moore passed away this morning in Colorado, a family spokesperson said. Moore's family declined to release further details about the death, but stated on Sunday that he had suffered a "brain complication" stemming from the accident ... on top of a severe concussion and bleeding of the heart. Moore was competing at the snowmobile freestyle final last Thursday when his 450-pound snowmobile flipped over and landed on top of him. ESPN released a statement Tuesday, saying, "We've worked closely on safety issues with athletes, course designers and other experts for each of the 18 years of X Games. Still, when the world's best compete at the highest level in any sport, risks remain." www.euronews.com French soldiers have reportedly taken control of the airport in Kidal. Along with Gao and Timbuktu, it is the third large town in the north of Mali to be retaken from the control of armed Islamist groups in the last 48 hours. The French military, with the help of the Malian Army, have reestablished control in all three places without meeting much resistance. But there is disorder on the streets. In Timbuktu, there have been reports of looting of shops owned by those suspected of having helped the Islamist groups who have occupied the town since last year. International human rights groups also say some Malian troops have carried out revenge killings of suspected rebels and sympathisers in retaken areas. www.euronews.com It is third time lucky for South Korea where a rocket has been successfully launched after two previous failures. In addition, the launch was also called off at the last minute twice last year, due to technical problems. Named Naro, the rocket is carrying a satellite to collect climate data - the first South Korean satellite to be sent into space from inside the country. "Five hundred and forty seconds after the launch of Naro at 4 o'clock this afternoon, the scientific satellite successfully separated from the rocket. Based on various analysis reports, I officially announce the launch as successful - placing the scientific satellite into the proper orbit," South Korea's Minister for Education, Science and Technology Lee Ju-Ho said at a press conference. Timing could be key. The launch comes just over a month after neighbouring North Korea successfully sent its own satellite into - causing tension in the region, allegations of long-range missile testing and more UN sanctions against Pyongyang.
