• Melvin River
  The Melvin River is an 8.1-mile-long (13.0 km)river located in the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of Lake Winnipesaukee, part of the Merrimack River watershed.
  The Melvin River lies entirely within the town of Tuftonboro, New Hampshire. It begins at the outlet of Melvin Pond, near the town's eastern border, and flows west along the base of the Ossipee Mountains to the north. The river reaches Lake Winnipesaukee at Melvin Village.

• Allan Melvin
  Allan John Melvin (February 18, 1923 - January 17, 2008) was an American character actor who appeared in several television shows, including the roles of Corporal Henshaw on The Phil Silvers Show; Alice's boyfriend Sam the Butcher on The Brady Bunch; and Archie Bunker's friend Barney Hefner on All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place.
  Born in Kansas City, Missouri to Richard and Marie Melvin and raised in New York City by his paternal grandparents Frank and Helen (née Campbell) Melvin, he attended Columbia University. After graduation he served in the United States Navy and married his wife, Amalia Faustina Sestero, in March 1944 in New York City.
  While working at a job in the sound effects department of NBC Radio, he did a nightclub act and appeared and won on the Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts radio show. While appearing on Broadway in Stalag 17, he got his break into television by getting the role of Corporal Steve Henshaw on the popular The Phil Silvers Show program. TV fans of this era usually best remember his role as Henshaw, Sergeant Bilko's right hand man on that show. "He was proudest of that show," Amalia Melvin said. "I think the camaraderie of all those guys made it such a pleasant way to work. They were so relaxed."

• Bob Melvin
  Robert Paul Melvin (born October 28, 1961, in Palo Alto, California) is the manager of the Oakland Athletics, and a former Major League Baseball catcher.
  During a 10-year playing career, he played from 1985–94 for seven different teams. In his eight-year managing career, he has managed the Seattle Mariners (2003–04), the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005–09), and the Oakland Athletics (2011–present).
  Melvin played ten seasons, mostly as a backup, for the Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Chicago White Sox. He finished his career with a batting average of .233. and 35 home runs. While a member of the Giants, he served as the backup for fellow catcher Bob Brenly, who also went on to serve as manager of the Diamondbacks.
  During the 2003 and 2004 seasons he was the manager of the Seattle Mariners. His first year as a manager with the Mariners, the team won 93 games but failed to go to the playoffs. The Mariners decided not to extend his contract after the 2004 season when the team lost a total of 99 games. Melvin returned to the Diamondbacks, for whom he had previously been bench coach before being hired by the Mariners. Melvin was actually the second man hired for the job; originally, the Diamondbacks hired Wally Backman, who was fired without managing a single game due to revelations of past arrests and serious financial issues.

  Chasity Melvin (born May 3, 1976) is an American professional basketball player originally from Roseboro, North Carolina.
  A 6'3" (1.90 m) forward, Melvin entered the WNBA in 1999, and played for the Cleveland Rockers, the Washington Mystics, and the Chicago Sky over twelve seasons in the league. She recorded WNBA career averages of 9.7 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. Melvin has also played professionally in Italy, Israel, Spain, Poland, Russia the ABL, and China.
  During a game at the UIC Pavilion on August 15, 2007, Melvin's left eye was dislodged from its socket after Shameka Christon of the New York Liberty accidentally struck Melvin's face as the two were battling for a rebound. Melvin was treated at the University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center, where her eye went back into its socket by itself. She was able to return to the arena to participate in Fan Appreciation Night activities after the game. Melvin suffered scratches to her cornea, but no skull fractures or vision loss.

  Doug Melvin
  Douglas Robert Melvin (born August 8, 1952 ) is a Canadian front-office executive in Major League Baseball who currently serves as the general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers of the National League. He has held the position since 26 September 2002.
  A former minor-league pitcher who played in the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees farm systems from 1972–78, Melvin began his front office career with the Yankees as an assistant scouting director, then spent nearly a decade (1987–94) as assistant general manager and director of player development of the Baltimore Orioles. In his first general manager posting, with the Texas Rangers from 1994–2001, the Rangers qualified for the postseason three times — the only times the franchise had done so to that point in its 48-year history. Melvin spent the 2002 season as a consultant for the Boston Red Sox before taking the reins in Milwaukee.
  On September 26, 2002, Melvin became general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2007, he ended the franchise's 15-year streak of losing seasons when the Brewers finished above .500, although a late-season slide eliminated them from the NL Central and wild-card races. In 2008, Melvin moved the Brewers into Wild Card and, briefly, NL Central contention with his bold, mid-season pickup of pitcher CC Sabathia, but another late-season losing streak, which left the Brewers out of contention for their division title and tied for the NL Wild Card, caused Melvin and club owner Mark Attanasio to fire manager Ned Yost with 12 games left in the regular season. Melvin and Attanasio named the Brewers' third base coach Dale Sveum the interim manager for the regular season's final 12 games, and the Brewers clinched the National League Wild Card on the last day of the season, giving the team its first playoff berth since 1982.

  Eric Melvin
  Eric Scott Melvin (born July 9, 1966) is an American musician and the rhythm guitarist in the California punk band NOFX. He has been in the band from its beginnings in the early 1980s to the present day. Eric has been known for his dreadlocks that vary in color each time NOFX performs. Though most recognized for his ability to play the guitar, Melvin can also play the accordion.
  In the first episode of the NOFX world tour show on the Fuse TV Network, Mike "Fat Mike" Burkett said that although he, El Hefe, and Erik Sandin have all got better, Melvin still continues to play at the same level he did when the band first started.
  Eric sings backup vocals on most NOFX songs and wrote guitar riffs on NOFX songs such as the intro for "Seeing Double at the Triple Rock". His vocal style is called the "Mel Yell."
  Eric also plays in Punk Rock Karaoke with Steve Soto, Derek O'Brien and Greg Hetson where the motto is "We Play... You Sing!" On Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' tour of Europe in 2007 Melvin filled in for Fat Mike on bass. He recently got married. Melvin is Jewish.

  Jeff Dunham
  Jeff Dunham (born April 18, 1962) is an American ventriloquist and stand-up comedian who has also appeared on numerous television shows, including Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central Presents, The Tonight Show and Sonny With a Chance. He has four specials that run on Comedy Central: Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself, Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity, Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special, and Jeff Dunham: Controlled Chaos. Dunham also starred in The Jeff Dunham Show, a series on the network in 2009. His style has been described as "a dressed-down, more digestible version of Don Rickles with multiple personality disorder". Describing his characters, Time observes, "All of them are politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting and ill tempered." Dunham has been credited with reviving ventriloquism, and doing more to promote the art form than anyone since Edgar Bergen.
  Dunham has been called "America's favorite comedian" by Slate.com, and according to the concert industry publication Pollstar, he is the top-grossing standup act in North America, and is among the most successful acts in Europe as well. As of November 2009, he has sold over four million DVDs, an additional $7 million in merchandise sales, and received more than 350 million hits on YouTube as of October 2009 (his introduction of Achmed the Dead Terrorist in Spark of Insanity was ranked as the ninth most watched YouTube video at the time).A Very Special Christmas Special was the most-watched telecast in Comedy Central history, with its DVD going quadruple platinum (selling over 400,000) in its first two weeks.Forbes.com ranked Dunham as the third highest-paid comedian in the United States behind Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock, and reported that he was one of the highest-earning comics from June 2008 to June 2009, earning approximately $30 million during that period.

  Lieutenant (junior grade) John T. Melvin (16 October 1887 – 5 November 1917) was an officer in the United States Navy.
  Born at Selma, Alabama, Melvin was appointed midshipman 6 July 1907 and commissioned ensign 7 July 1911. Resigning his commission 20 August 1915, he was appointed lieutenant (jg.), 9 February 1917, upon his joining the Naval Reserve.
  Attached to the patrol boat Alcedo, Lieutenant (jg.) Melvin lost his life 5 November 1917 when that vessel was sunk by a German submarine in the war zone. Alcedo was the first American war vessel to go down in World War I, and Lieutenant Melvin is officially recognized as the first American naval officer to die in the war.
  Two destroyers have been named USS Melvin for him.

  Mel Brooks (born Melvin Kaminsky; June 28, 1926) is an American film director, screenwriter, composer, lyricist, comedian, actor and producer. He is best known as a creator of broad film farces and comic parodies. He began his career as a stand-up comic and as a writer for the early TV variety show Your Show of Shows. He became well known as part of the comedy duo with Carl Reiner, The 2000 Year Old Man. In middle age he became one of the most successful film directors of the 1970s, with many of his films being among the top ten money makers of the year that they were released. His most well known films include The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World, Part I and Spaceballs. More recently he has had a smash hit on Broadway with the musical adaptation of his first film, The Producers. He was married to the actress Anne Bancroft from 1964 until her death in 2005.
  Brooks is a member of the short list of entertainers with the distinction of having won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award. Three of his films ranked in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 comedy films of all-time: Blazing Saddles at number 6, The Producers at number 11, and Young Frankenstein at number 13.

• Melvin Alvah Traylor
  Melvin Alvah Traylor (born October 21, 1878 in Breeding, Kentucky - February 14, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois), the eldest of seven children of James Milton Traylor and Kitty Frances Traylor née Harvey. He was an American lawyer and banker.
  He was admitted to the bar in Hillsboro, Texas in 1901 and entered banking in 1908 when he became vice president of the Citizens National Bank of Ballinger, the bank merged with the Ballinger First National Bank in 1909 and Traylor became its president. He went on to oversee several banks around the United States and became president of the American Bankers Association in 1926 and later the first president of the First Union Trust and Savings Bank in 1928 which would go on to become Chicago's largest bank under his leadership in 1931. He was a strong proponent of a world bank and was a part of the American delegation to the conference that set up the Bank of International Settlements.
  He spoke out on the financial causes of the Great Depression and gained national attention, appearing on the cover of Time Magazine on November 21, 1932. He was considered a possible Democratic candidate for president in 1932 but he did not pursue this candidacy, though he received approximately 40 votes on each of the first three ballots at the convention.

He had many celebrity clients, including Zsa Zsa Gabor, Errol Flynn, Chuck Berry, Muhammad Ali, the Rolling Stones, Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Bakker, Martha Mitchell, Lana Turner, Tony Curtis, and Mae West. He won over USD $600,000,000 in judgments during his legal career.
  Melvin Mouron Belli was born in the California Gold Rush town of Sonora, California in the Sierra foothills. His parents were of Italian ancestry from Switzerland^{[citation needed]} His grandmother Anna Mouron was the first female pharmacist in California. By the 1920s, the family had moved to the city of Stockton, California where Belli attended Stockton High School.
  Belli graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1929 and after traveling around the world for a year, attended the Boalt Hall School of Law at Berkeley in 1933. After graduation, his first job was posing as a hobo for the Works Progress Administration and riding the rails to observe the Depression's impact on the country's vagrant population. His first major legal victory came shortly after graduation, in a personal injury lawsuit representing an injured cable car gripman. Over insurance lawyers' objections, Belli brought a model of a cable car intersection, and the gear box and chain involved in the accident, to demonstrate to jurors exactly what had happened.^{[citation needed]}

  Melvin Bernhardt (born 1931 in Buffalo, New York) is an American stage and television director. He was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, and much of his work has been in the New York City area. He is known for his productions of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, Da, and Crimes of the Heart. Bernhardt began his career as a stage manager; he made his directorial debut in 1965 with Conerico was Here to Stay at the Cherry Lane Theatre.
  Melvin Bernhardt was born on 26 February 1931 in Buffalo, New York. His parents were Max Bernhard and Kate Benatovich. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University at Buffalo and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University. Since January 8, 1989 Bernhardt has been partnered with New York based stage/television actor and audiobook narrator Jeff Woodman. The pair were married on September 10, 2011.
  Melvin Bernhardt began his career as a stage manager. He served as the stage manager for the original Broadway theatre productions of Diary of a Scoundrel and Livin' the Life. Bernhardt directed his first play, Conerico was Here to Stay, at the Cherry Lane Theatre in Manhattan in 1965. From there, Bernhardt directed plays throughout the United States, including productions in Hartford and Cincinnati and a national tour of Who's Happy Now? in 1968. He made his London directing debut in November 1972 at the Hampstead Theatre Club with his production of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. Bernhardt is known as an "actor's director", as he focuses more on character development than on elaborate staging. He is currently a member of the Honorary Advisory Committee of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

A 6'1" (1.85 m), 185 lb (84 kg) point guard, he played collegiately for the Missouri Tigers. Booker was the 1994 Big Eight Player of the Year when he led Missouri to an undefeated conference record of 14-0 and an Elite Eight birth.   Melvin Terry Bullitt (born November 13, 1984) is an American football defensive back who is currently a free agent. He was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2007 and played for the team for five seasons. He played college football for Texas A&M.
  Bullitt starred at Naaman Forest High School in Garland, Texas, where he was team MVP as a senior after totaling 78 tackles (43 solo), five pass deflections, and three interceptions. He also caught 7 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. He was teammates with Uche Nwaneri and Jacob Lacey.
  Bullitt committed to Texas A&M at the end of his junior year.
  As a freshman at Texas A&M, Bullitt played in 8 games and produced 13 tackles. As a sophomore, he played in 12 games, finishing with 29 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble. He started 10 games as a junior and compiled 59 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. In the 2006 season, as a senior outside linebacker, he started in all 13 games had 84 tackles (26 solo), one interception, one fumble recovery, and eight pass deflections. After the season, he was named to the 2006 AT&T All-Big 12 Football First Team. He finished his college career with 183 tackles (80 solo), 10.5 tackles for losses, and four interceptions.

  Melvin Burgess (born 25 April 1954) is a British author of children's fiction. His first book, The Cry of the Wolf, was published in 1990. He gained a certain amount of notoriety in 1996 with the publication of Junk, which was published in the shadow of the film of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting, and dealt with the trendy and controversial idea of heroin-addicted teenagers. Junk soon became, at least in Britain, one of the best-known young adult books of the decade.
  Burgess again courted predictable controversy in 2003, with the publication of Doing It, which dealt with underage sex. America created a show based on the book, Life as We Know It. In his other books, such as Bloodtide and The Ghost Behind the Wall, Burgess has dealt with less realist and sometimes fantastic themes. In 2001 Burgess wrote the novelisation of the film Billy Elliot, based on Lee Hall's screenplay. Polyphony is a narrative technique used in many of his most famous novels.

  Melvin Calvin
  Melvin Ellis Calvin (April 8, 1911 – January 8, 1997) was an American chemist most famed for discovering the Calvin cycle along with Andrew Benson and James Bassham, for which he was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He spent most of his five-decade career at the University of California, Berkeley.
  Calvin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. His father was born in Tsarist Lithuania and his mother in Tsarist Georgia. As a small child, Calvin's family moved to Detroit; he graduated from Central High School in 1928. Melvin Calvin earned his Bachelor of Science from the Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now known as Michigan Technological University) in 1931 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1935. He then spent the next four years doing postdoctoral work at the University of Manchester. He married Genevieve Jemtegaard in 1942, and they had three children, two daughters and a son.

  Melvin "Pat" Day, CNZM (born 30 June 1923) is a New Zealand artist and art historian.
  Day was born in Hamilton, New Zealand. At the age of eleven, Day began Saturday morning classes at Elam School of Art, University of Auckland, under the tuteleage of Archie Fisher, John Weeks, Lois White and Ida Eise. In 1939, he went on to study as a full-time student at Elam, graduating with a Preliminary diploma in fine arts two years later. Apart from a brief period at Auckland Teachers’ Training College, Day spent the remaining war years in the New Zealand Army and then the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Due to his drafting abilities he worked on topographical and landscape views of the Matakana area and Mototapu Islands.
  He married Oroya McAuley in 1952 and lived and worked at that time in Rotorua. After a few years teaching and painting in the Rotorua area, Day arrived in Wellington in 1954 and took up studies towards a Bachelor of Arts at Victoria University of Wellington while teaching at Hutt Intermediate School. From the late 1950s onwards, he exhibited widely in New Zealand and his work was included in the 1961 Commonwealth Art Today exhibition at the Commonwealth Institute, London. In 1963 Day enrolled at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, under the direction of art historian Professor Anthony Blunt. At the Courtauld Institute, Day developed a fascination for the geometric precision in the paintings of Italian Renaissance artist, Paolo Uccello and began what were to become the celebrated modernist adaptations of his Uccello series.

  Melvin Earl Dummar (born August 28, 1944) is a Utah man who earned attention when he claimed to have saved reclusive business tycoon Howard Hughes in a Nevada desert in 1967, and to have been awarded part of Hughes' vast estate. Dummar's story was adapted into the Academy Award winning film Melvin and Howard, in which he was portrayed by Paul Le Mat. As of 2008, Dummar lives in Brigham City, Utah with his wife Bonnie.
  Dummar's claims resulted in a series of court battles which have all ruled against Dummar. A Las Vegas jury determined in 1978 that the will, leaving Dummar $156 million, was a forgery.
  While working at a service station in Willard, Utah, Dummar claimed to have discovered a disheveled and lost man lying on the side of a stretch of U.S. Highway 95 about 150 miles (240 km) north of Las Vegas, Nevada, near Lida Junction. Hughes asked Dummar to take him to the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. Dummar claimed that only in the final minutes of their encounter did Hughes reveal his identity.

  Melvin Anderson Ely (born May 2, 1978 in Harvey, Illinois) is an American professional basketball player.
  A 6'10", 261 lb (118 kg), forward-center from Fresno State, Ely was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round (12th overall pick) of the 2002 NBA Draft. At Fresno State, he enjoyed a prolific career under the coaching of Jerry Tarkanian.
  While attending Harvey Thornton High School, Ely earned All-American honors from McDonald's and Parade. As a senior in 1997, he averaged 15.5 points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game and 5.2 blocked shots per game during the regular season and was named the Chicago Sun-Times player of the year and first team all-state. Ely led his Wildcats to a second-place finish in 1995 and 1996 and third-place in 1997. During Ely's 3 years as a starter, Thornton Township posted a combined record of 93 wins and 4 losses, including marks of 32-1 in 1997, 31-1 in 1996 and 30-2 in 1995.
  In 2007, Ely was voted one of the "100 Legends of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament," recognizing his superior performance in his appearances in the tournament.

  Melvin Thaddeus Fowler, Jr. (born March 31, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American football center who is currently a free agent. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football at Maryland.
  Fowler has been a member of the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions and Florida Tuskers.
  Fowler was an All-county and All-Long Island selection as a defensive lineman at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York where he was chosen Long Island’s top lineman in a poll of area coaches. He was also a finalist for the 1996 Bob Zellner Award. He was a three-sport standout who also excelled in basketball and lacrosse.
  Fowler did not allow a quarterback sack in the four years as a starter at the University of Maryland. He took over center duties in his redshirt freshman year, despite having practiced at that position for only 10 days before earning the starting job. He was a model of consistency, as he started every game (44) he played in for Maryland.

  David Melvin English (October 12, 1942 – February 23, 1995) better known by the stage name Melvin Franklin, was an American bass singer. Franklin is best known for his role as a member of Motown singing group The Temptations from 1960 to 1994.
  David English was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Rose English, a teenage mother from nearby Mobile. His biological father was the preacher of the English family's church in Mobile, who, according to his mother, impregnated her through non-consensual relations. Following David's birth, Rose English married Willard Franklin and moved to Detroit, her grandmother insisting young David be left behind in her care. David English finally moved to Detroit with his mother and stepfather in 1952 at age ten.
  Taking on his stepfather's surname for his stage name as a teenager, David English - now Melvin Franklin - was a member of a number of local singing groups in Detroit, including The Voice Masters with Lamont Dozier and David Ruffin, and frequently performed with his best friend, Richard Street.   Melvin Gibbs is an American bass guitarist, composer, and producer who has appeared on close to 200 albums in diverse genres of music. Gibbs has been called "the best bassist in the world" by Time Out New York magazine.^{[citation needed]}
  A native of Brooklyn, New York, Gibbs attended Medgar Evers College and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. After attending and graduating from the Berklee College of Music, Gibbs first came to public notice as a member of the group Defunkt which was a mainstay of the early 1980s downtown New York scene. Throughout most of the 1980s, he played in drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society alongside guitarist Vernon Reid, as well as playing with guitarist Sonny Sharrock and saxophonist John Zorn. Additionally with Jackson and guitarist Bill Frisell he was also a member of the group Power Tools. Gibbs co-led the band Eye and I and he is an original member of the Black Rock Coalition.
  He was a member of the avantmetal Rollins Band from 1993 to about 1998, and again in 2006 when the group briefly reformed. As a member of the Rollins Band he was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1995. Gibbs has also recorded with hip-hop artists Dead Prez, Brazilian artists Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte, Latin jazz artist Eddie Palmieri, Nigerian artist Femi Kuti, and guitarist Marc Ribot.   Melvin Paul Guillard, Jr. (born March 30, 1983) is an American mixed martial artist currently fighting in the lightweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He debuted with the company on The Ultimate Fighter 2 television series, losing in the first welterweight elimination bout to Josh Burkman. Guillard received his blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ricco Rodriguez in 2008.   In 2005 Guillard fought against fellow future UFC veteran Roger Huerta. After Guillard took a competitive decision victory, the fight was ruled a no contest after Huerta appealed the commission making an accusation that Guillard was greasing between rounds and that he was very slippery since the start of the 2nd round.
  Guillard later participated in The Ultimate Fighter 2, but was eliminated from the competition after losing by unanimous decision against Josh Burkman. Guillard returned at the season finale, defeating Marcus Davis by technical knockout due to a cut. Fighting again at welterweight, Guillard lost his next fight, against Josh Neer, by triangle choke submission which surprised many in attendance. Guillard seemed to control the fight until then, opening a large cut on Neer's forehead in the process.

  Melvin Hochster (born August 2, 1943) is an eminent American mathematician, regarded^{[by whom?]} as one of the leading commutative algebraists active today. He is currently the Jack E. McLaughlin Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan.
  Hochster attended Stuyvesant High School, where he was captain of the Math Team, and received a B.A. from Harvard University. While at Harvard, he was a Putnam Fellow in 1960. He earned his Ph.D. in 1967 from Princeton University, where he wrote a dissertation under Goro Shimura characterizing the prime spectra of commutative rings. He held positions at the University of Minnesota and Purdue University before joining the faculty at Michigan in 1977. Hochster shared the 1980 Cole Prize with Michael Aschbacher, received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981, and has been a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1992. In 2008, on the occasion of his 65th birthday, he was honored with a conference in Ann Arbor and with a special volume of the Michigan Mathematical Journal.

  Melvin Konner, MD, PhD, is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Anthropology and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at Emory University. He studied at Brooklyn College , CUNY (1966), where he met Marjorie Shostak, whom he later married and with whom he had three children. He earned his PhD in biological anthropology from Harvard University in 1973. He spent two years doing fieldwork among the Kalahari San or Bushmen, studying infant development and the hormonal mechanism of lactational infertility. After six years on the Harvard faculty, he returned to school and received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1985. He then moved to Emory as department chair.
  From 1985 on, he contributed substantially in developing the concept of a Paleolithic diet and its impact on health, publishing along with Stanley Boyd Eaton, and later also with his wife Marjorie Shostak and with Loren Cordain.

  Melvin Joseph Maas was born in Duluth, Minnesota, May 14, 1898. He moved with his parents to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1898. Educated in the public schools, he graduated from St. Thomas College at St. Paul in 1919 and also attended the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. He worked in the insurance business.
  During the World War I, Maas served in the aviation branch of the United States Marine Corps in 1918 and 1919. He left active duty in 1925 and served in the Marine Corps Reserve, retiring on August 1, 1952 at the rank of major general.
  Maas was elected as a Republican to the 70th, 71st, and 72nd Congresses (March 4, 1927 – March 3, 1933). He ran unsuccessfully for renomination in 1932.
  On December 13, 1932, a 25-year old department store clerk from Pennsylvania pulled a gun in the House visitors' gallery and demanded to be allowed to address the House. As members fled the chamber, Maas stood his ground and shouted to the man that no one was allowed to speak in the House while carrying a weapon and demanded that he throw it down. The man did so, was promptly arrested, and escorted from the House Chamber by police. For this act of courage, Maas received the Carnegie Medal.

  Melvin James McQuaid (6 September 1911 - 16 January 2001) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the Canadian House of Commons. He was born in Souris, Prince Edward Island and became a lawyer and clerk by career.
  McQuaid attended Saint Dunstan's University, St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University.
  In 1957, he became town clerk for Souris. He served in provincial politics as a Councillor of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for 1st Kings District from 1959 to 1962, including functions as provincial treasurer and Attorney General.
  He was first elected at the King's riding in the 1965 general election, and re-elected at the Cardigan riding in the 1968 election.
  After serving his terms in the 27th and 28th Canadian Parliaments, McQuaid returned to provincial politics to become leader of the provincial Progressive Conservative party which was the Opposition party. He once again became a Councillor for the 1st Kings electoral district from 1972 until 1976. After leaving provincial office, McQuaid was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. After his retirement from the court in 1981, he served on the National Parole Board.

He continued his improvement in 1990, hitting .283 with nine home runs and 59 RBI in 126 games with the Sumter Braves. He made his debut for the club on 6 August 2011, starting in their draw 2-2 draw with Heerenveen.   Melvin Horace Purvis, Jr. (October 24, 1903 – February 29, 1960) was an American law enforcement official and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent. He was given the nickname "Little Mel" because of his short stature. He is noted for leading the manhunts that tracked such outlaws as Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and John Dillinger.
  Purvis was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina to Melvin Horace Purvis, Sr. (1869–1938), a pig farmer, and Janie Elizabeth (née Mims, 1874–1927) as the fifth of twelve siblings.
  Purvis received his law degree from the University of South Carolina and had a brief career as a lawyer. Purvis was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order while attending South Carolina. He joined the FBI in 1927, and headed the Division of Investigation offices in Birmingham, Oklahoma City and Cincinnati. In 1932 he was placed in charge of the Chicago office by Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover. He was a well-educated man, known to be a crack shot.   Melvin Rhyne (b.October 12, 1936, Indianapolis, Indiana), is a jazz organist best known for his work with Wes Montgomery.
  Melvin Rhyne was born in Indianapolis in 1936 and started playing the piano shortly thereafter. At 19 years old, Rhyne started playing piano with then-unknown tenor saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk but quickly switched over to the instrument that would make him famous: the Hammond B3 organ. Rhyne's piano skills translated to the organ fluently and before long he was backing famous blues players like B.B. King and T-Bone Walker.
  Melvin's big break, however, came in 1959 when he was asked to join fellow Indianapolis jazz musician Wes Montgomery's newly formed trio. Rhyne played with Montgomery for five years and cut four records with the trio: The Wes Montgomery Trio: A Dynamic New Sound, Guitar on the Go, Boss Guitar, and Portrait of Wes.
  After the Montgomery years, Rhyne moved to Wisconsin and largely kept to himself for the next two decades.
  In 1991, however, Rhyne returned to the jazz scene in full force, playing on Herb Ellis' album Roll Call, Brian Lynch's At the Main Event, and his own comeback The Legend. Rhyne continued to be prolific in the years to come, releasing eight more solo albums on the Criss Cross jazz label.

  Melvin Schwartz (November 2, 1932 – August 28, 2006) was an American physicist. He shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics with Leon M. Lederman and Jack Steinberger for their development of the neutrino beam method and their demonstration of the doublet structure of the leptons through the discovery of the muon neutrino.
  He grew up in New York City in the Great Depression and went to the Bronx High School of Science. His interest in physics began there at the age of 12.
  He earned his B.A. (1953) and Ph.D. (1958) at Columbia University, where Nobel laureate I. I. Rabi was the head of the physics department. Schwartz became an assistant professor at Columbia in 1958. He was promoted to associate professor in 1960 and full professor in 1963. Tsung-Dao Lee, a Columbia colleague who had recently won the Nobel prize at age 30, inspired the experiment for which Schwartz received his Nobel. Schwartz and his colleagues performed the experiments which led to their Nobel Prize in the early 1960s, when all three were on the Columbia faculty.   Melvin Seals (born 1953 in San Francisco, California) is an American musician, best known as a long time member of the Jerry Garcia Band.
  Melvin Seals began playing piano at age eight and began his musical adventure playing gospel music for his local church. Over the next years he joined a few different bands in San Francisco and became good at playing other keyboards, particularly the electric organ, which he would play for the majority of his musical career. He went on to record and perform with artists such as Charlie Daniels, Elvin Bishop and Chuck Berry.
  In 1980 Melvin Seals joined the Jerry Garcia Band and remained a member until Jerry Garcia's untimely death in 1995. He had the third-longest tenure in the band next to Garcia and bassist John Kahn, who had been members for the band's entire history. After Garcia and Kahn's deaths in 1995 and 1996 respectively, Seals formed JGB which he performs with to this day.   Melvin Sparks (March 22, 1946 – March 15, 2011) was an American soul jazz, hard bop and jazz blues guitarist. He recorded a number of albums for Prestige Records, later recording for Savant Records. He appeared on several recordings with musicians including Lou Donaldson, Sonny Stitt, Leon Spencer and Johnny Hammond Smith.
  Sparks was born in Houston, Texas, United States, and raised in a musical family. He received his first guitar at age 11. Sparks began working in the rhythm and blues genre as a high school student, first with Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, and then with the Upsetters, a touring band formed by Little Richard, which also backed Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye.
  Sparks moved to New York City and worked as a session musician for Blue Note and Prestige Records. As part of the burgeoning soul-jazz scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Sparks often backed organists like Jack McDuff, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Charles Earland.   Melvin A. Steinberg, born (1933-10-04) October 4, 1933 (age 78), served as the fifth Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 1987 to 1995 under Governor William Donald Schaefer. He was also President of the Maryland State Senate from January 1983 to 1987, and a member of the State Senate from 1967 until his election to the position of Lieutenant Governor. Steinberg graduated from the University of Baltimore with an A.A. degree in 1952 and with a J.D. degree in 1955.
  The relationship between Steinberg and Schaefer was strained, with each publicly criticising the other and extensive coverage being devoted to their personal relationship. Despite their differences, they worked together for eight years (1987–1995), winning two elections in the process. Steinberg ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 1994 launching his campaign pledgind a war on crime, but was defeated by Parris Glendening, who went on to become Governor. Steinberg then took up a career in lobbying. In 1998, he drew criticism for supporting the Republican candidate for Governor, Ellen Sauerbrey, rather than endorsing Glendening in his bid for re-election; Sauerbrey was a critic of abortion and of gun control, positions opposite those held by liberal Steinberg.

  Melvin Monroe ("Mel") Stewart (born November 16, 1968 in Gastonia, North Carolina) is a retired American swimmer who won two gold medals and one bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Stewart graduated from Mercersburg Academy and the University of Tennessee.
  Stewart was a prominent 200m butterfly swimmer of his era. A 14-time national champion, he won the 200 m event at the 1991 World Championships in Perth, defeating Hall of Famers Michael Groß of Germany and Tamás Darnyi of Hungary. Next year he became the gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in Olympic record time, 1:56.26. Stewart, the world-record holder since 1991, won a second gold as a preliminary heat member of the 4×100m medley relay and a bronze on the 4×200m freestyle relay. In his first Olympic Games at Seoul in 1988, he was placed fifth in the 200m butterfly. Stewart held the world record at 1:55.69 from 1991 to 1995 when it was broken by Denis Pankratov of Russia.
  It all began for Stewart in 1974. Under the direction of Coach Frankie Bell at the Johnston Memorial YMCA pool in Charlotte, North Carolina, he won National YMCA titles. Bell taught him stroke technique and built his love for the sport, motivating the already inspired youngster with a banana split every time he won. By age 10, he was ranked among the top 10 in the nation in his age group in sixteen events. “Little Melvin,” as he was called, grew up on the grounds of Heritage USA, the PTL Ministries Theme Park and religious retreat where his father was recreation director of Jim and Tammy Bakker’s Heritage Church and Athletic Director of his school, Heritage Academy.

  Duncan "Melvin" Tarley (born October 31, 1982 in Monrovia) is a Liberian footballer, playing for Phnom Penh Crown in Cambodia.
  Tarley first came to prominence in 2005, during Minnesota Thunder's run to the semi finals of the 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Tarley scored six goals in the competition - including four against Real Salt Lake - to tie as the tournament's top goalscorer.
  Tarley's first appearance in Major League Soccer came with Real Salt Lake in 2005. The Colorado Rapids acquired Tarley’s rights from Real Salt Lake in exchange for a 4th round pick in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft on August 15, 2006, but he was waived by the Rapids at the end of the 2006 season having appeared in just three games. He returned to the Minnesota Thunder of the USL-1 for one season, prior to joining the Puerto Rico Islanders in 2007, and later moving on to Miami FC, also in 2007.
  Tarley re-joined Minnesota Thunder in 2008. On March 22, 2010 he signed with NSC Minnesota Stars.
  At the time of Tarley's selection for the Liberian U-21 national team in 1998, he was the youngest player in team history, only 14 years old. He played his first game for the senior national team in 2004.

  A 6'11" center, Turpin was born in Lexington, Kentucky and attended Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia from 1979–80. He was FUMA's most valuable player for the postgraduate squad under coach Fletcher Arritt, also being voted the number one player in the state for varsity basketball; he averaged 19 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots, being inducted into the Fork Union Military Academy Hall of Fame in 2000.
  At the University of Kentucky, Turpin made the 1st Team All-SEC for 1982 and 1983, and was a starter for the NCAA Final Four Kentucky Wildcats team in 1983–84. In 1984, he was the Southeastern Conference scoring leader, holding the record for the most field goals made in SEC tournament play in addition to co-holding the honour of the most points scored in a single tournament game. Turpin scored 42 points in a game against University of Tennessee as a junior, making 18 of 22 shots from the field; he similarly dominated Louisiana State University as a senior, shooting 15 of 17 from the floor and five of six from the free throw line.

  Melvin van Peebles
  Melvin "Block" Van Peebles (born August 21, 1932) is an American actor, director, screenwriter, playwright, novelist and composer.
  He is most famous for creating the acclaimed film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, which heralded a new era of African-American focused films. He is the father of actor and director Mario Van Peebles.
  Van Peebles was born in Chicago, Illinois to a black tailor. He joined the Air Force in 1954, thirteen days after graduating (B.A., 1953) from Ohio Wesleyan University, staying for three and a half years. He married a German woman, Maria Marx. They lived in Mexico for a brief period, where he painted portraits, before coming back to the United States, where he started driving cable cars in San Francisco.
  Van Peebles began writing about his experiences as a cable car driver. What evolved from an initially small article and a series of photographs was Van Peebles' first book, The Big Heart.
  One day, a passenger suggested that Van Peebles should become a filmmaker. He shot his first short film, Pickup Men for Herrick, in 1957. He made two more short films during the same period. According to Van Peebles, "I thought they were features. Each one turned out to be eleven minutes long. I was trying to do features. I knew nothing." As Van Peebles learned more about the filmmaking process, he found out that "I could make a feature for five hundred dollars. That was the cost of ninety minutes of film. I didn't know a thing about shooting a film sixteen to one or ten to one or none of that shit. Then I forgot you had to develop film. And I didn't know you needed a work print. All I can say is that after I did one thing he would say, 'Well, aren't you gonna put sound on it?' and I would go, 'Oh shit!' That's all I could say."

  Melvin Lenzo Watkins (born November 15, 1954 in Reidsville, North Carolina) is an American college basketball coach and former player. He is an assistant coach under Mike Anderson at the University of Arkansas. He has also been the associate head coach at the University of Missouri. He served as interim head coach during the end of the 2006 season, but returned to his former position when new coach Mike Anderson was hired.
  Melvin Watkins attended Reidsville High School in Reidsville, North Carolina. Watkins started for the high school basketball team for three years, from 1970 - 1973. His senior year he was named team captain and, after helping the team earn the state championship, he was named a 1973 High School All-American. A feat shared with only two other Reidsville athletes, Marcus Harris and Frank"Gilbert" Fleming, who accomplished it 21 years later.
  Watkins played college basketball at UNC Charlotte, where he was the point guard and team captain of the 49ers' 1977 Final Four team. His #32 jersey was retired at his final home game in 1977.^{[citation needed]} While at UNC Charlotte Watkins made a point to complete his education, earning a B.A. in Economics in 1977.

  General Zais attended the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. In 1937 he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve. He attended the U.S. Command and General Staff College, and was also a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, and the National War College. He was promoted to Brigadier General, June 1, 1964; Major General, May 1, 1967; and Lieutenant General, August 1, 1969.He was named Commanding General, Allied Land Forces, Southeast Europe, Turkey, effective August 1973 following his promotion to General on July 13 the month prior.
  He was a veteran of World War II and Vietnam War.   Murray Melvin (born 1932, London) is an English stage and film actor.
  The son of Hugh Victor Melvin and Maisie Winifred Driscoll, he is known for having created the role of Geoffrey in the Shelagh Delaney play, A Taste of Honey, which he also performed opposite Rita Tushingham in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey. In 1962 he won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance, and was also nominated for the BAFTA "Most Promising Newcomer" award.
  Melvin joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop company at the Theatre Royal Stratford East while still a student. In 1958, he appeared in productions of Brendan Behan's The Hostage. In 1963, he was in the original cast of Oh, What a Lovely War!.
  He appeared in the very first episode of the cult television series The Avengers in 1960. Melvin's other film appearances have included roles in Alfie, and since 1964, regular appearances in the films of director Ken Russell, beginning with Diary of a Nobody and continuing withThe Devils (as the scheming, but ultimately deceived, Father Mignon), The Boy Friend and cameos in Lisztomania and Prisoner of Honor. He had an important role as Reverend Samuel Runt in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975). He also appeared in Crossed Swords (1977) and the Italian mini-series Christopher Columbus (1985).

Months later she took over the role of Chelsea Brady (originally portrayed by Mandy Musgrave). She and her dog were seen on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, when she was randomly interviewed at a gas station for a segment. Melvin has also guest-starred on Summerland, Jack & Bobby and 8 Simple Rules. With her family, she has also appeared on Family Feud.
