Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. Jack Hargreaves: Just one more 'Out of Town'
"Well. Things are as they used to be. Still spend half my life in the shed."
This is an extract from a review of Southern Television's star programmes that appeared on STV's successor, Meridian, compered by Jack's friend and colleague Fred Dinenage. Coincidentally it was broadcast the evening Jack died on 15 March 1994. Fred when I met him at Jack's funeral and who knew Jack was ill at the time the programme was made, said it was typical of Jack that, whether by luck or some magical intention, it should have gone out that same night. The 'last' 'Out of Town' appears on this clip between 02.29 and 07.32. JH had a liking for the risks of live TV, but this evening had been pre-recorded. Isobel, his wife of thirty years, who died in 1998, told me that though Fred had kindly sent her a tape shortly after the broadcast, she couldn't bring herself to watch it. I have never been able to find a recording then, in July 2010, Ian Wegg, who'd traced me through the internet, kindly sent me a DVD containing the whole programme.
I’ve edited it to show the episode of Out of Town that JH agreed to make for the broadcast, though the series had actually ended 13 years earlier shortly before Southern Television lost its franchise. In this 'special' the shed is not the usual studio rig, but one of my stepfather's real sheds - one at his last home, Raven Cottage, near Belchalwell in Dorset. Who was behind the camera then? I don't know. The broadcast includes a reunion between Jack and his companion entertainers on ‘How!’ the popular children’s programme he invented.
At the time this programme went out I was on a train. A few hours earlier I'd been beside Jack’s hospital bed with Bay, my sister. He was in a coma; had been far away since he'd arrived at the Hospital a few days earlier; already becoming part of everything, even though he seemed so palpably there and just in heavy sleep. At moments I’d wanted to raise my voice and shake him awake but he was a long way off. All the same we spoke to him in case he might have heard us somewhere in some last liminal space. Perhaps our voices hovered on a riverbank as he gazed at a rise or heard us by the edge of some wintry wood in the evening or imagined all of us, Bay and me and Mum, in the suspended time of dreams, strolling up Regent Street together after seeing a film in Leicester Square long ago, feeling it was now. Perhaps our murmurs by his bed fused with our childhood chatter in one river - Lambourn, Winterbourne, Kennet, Enborne, Itchen and Stour flowing together. Perhaps I’d imagined him a little boy again remembering his mother and father and brothers and the bullnose Morris days long before he knew us; long before the war and its intensities, Fleet Street, television studios, advertising agencies, cities of the plain and their dangerous women.
Perhaps all these were fleeting together to drift on the surface like sun sparkling off a cold chalk stream hiding for a moment the clean gravel, crayfish, caddis tubes and mayfly larvae, miller’s thumbs and brown trout suspended in the invisible current, with water crowfoot and emerald starwort stroking their golden scales.
Bay and me had eaten in Dorchester, then caught the train together and talked about Jack and Mum and our own children and us. It was the longest we’d been together for ages. I left Bay at Southampton so she could go on to London, phoning her husband Gabe to say she was on her way. “I think we’ll be back quite soon“ she’d said. Isobel rang me just after I’d got home to Birmingham saying Jack slipped away as the nurses turned him in the bed at 8-o-clock that evening when my train was somewhere between Banbury and Leamington Spa.

(…) C'est dans Héliogabale qu'Artaud affronte pour la première fois sur un mode systématique ce thème de la toute-puissance de la bisexualité créatrice. La « guerre des principes » y évoque déjà ce « rut quasi satanique » par lequel « le Paganisme, dans ses rites et dans ses fêtes, reproduit le Mythe de la création première » (VII,113). Ce premier androgyne qu'incarne Héliogabale, Artaud le conçoit non pas comme une structure stable où s'équilibreraient le masculin et le féminin, encore moins comme une fusion, mais comme une lutte à perpétuité, instable et violente, une oscillation permanente qui est une autre forme de la dépersonnalisation qu'il poursuit. L'image de l'androgyne, Artaud ne l'emploie d'ailleurs qu'ici et comme à regret puisqu'il se ravise plus bas : « Mais ce qui beaucoup plus que l'Androgyne apparaît dans cette image tournante, dans cette nature fascinante et double [...], et dans sa prodigieuse inconséquence sexuelle, image elle-même de la plus rigoureuse logique d'esprit, c'est l'idée de l'ANARCHIE » (p.83).
C'est à juste titre qu'Artaud corrige sa première référence pour rappeler à quel point l'anarchie de son héros a peu à voir avec ce qui sous le nom d'androgyne se réfère dans l'imaginaire à une complétude réalisée sous le signe de l'Un. On aurait tort en effet de voir dans ce qu'Artaud nomme la pédérastie rituelle d'Héliogabale le reflet des mythes qui se réfèrent à un ancêtre primordial cumulant la totalité des puissances magico-religieuses solidaires des deux sexes. Il ne s'agit pas ici de cette image totalisante du « genre neutre » niant le manque dont parle Green, pas plus que de ce fantasme finalement homosexuel dans le mythe d'Aristophane selon Platon qui nie la différence des sexes et absorbe le féminin en l'homme214. L'une et l'autre sont des images pacifiées (les êtres sphériques de Platon en sont l'emblème) qui réduisent les tensions en postulant une quiétude a-sexuelle ou une immobilité totalisante.
Les rites d'Héliogabale comme ceux des Tarahumaras mettent en scène un certain nombre de simulacres où la différence sexuelle est à la fois posée et désavouée. Double d'Héliogabale, le phallus sacré de la religion d'Émèse, ce fétiche215, désigne non pas l'organe mâle mais le va-et-vient entre humain et divin, masculin et féminin, dans la mise en scène perverse que le rite rejoue et démultiplie :
« [...] pour Héliogabale, Elagabalus c'est le membre érectile, à la fois humain et divin. Le membre érectile et le membre fort. Le membre-force qui se partage, qu'on n'utilise que partagé » (p. 81).
