Signing of Antarctic Treaty
Antarctica is the only continent in the world without a native human population or sovereignty. Instead, it is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System. The Antarctic Treaty was signed in Washington on 1 December 1959 by the twelve countries whose scientists had been active in and around Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957-58. It entered into force in 1961 and has since been acceded to by many other nations. The total number of Parties to the Treaty is now 50.

Antarctic Treaty: Lessons for climate solutions
Filmed at Paradise Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula in front of an Almirante Brown Station, Steven Blumenfeld discusses the importance of the Antarctic Treaty with Polar Explorer Robert Swan OBE (the first man in history to have walked to both the North and South Poles) during the International Antarctic Treaty Expedition in November 2009. In the lead up to the critical COP-15 Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Steven explains how the Antarctic Treaty can be used as a model for international cooperation in which common goals and objectives are used to build a platform over seemingly irreconcilable issues that may exist below. It is imperative that we focus our energy on the mutual goals of nations and citizens to ensure a sustainable course of action, rather than allowing disputes related to the implementation of those goals to keep us on a course for disaster. StreamServe | 2041 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty
2041 was founded by polar explorer, environmental leader and public speaker Robert Swan, OBE, the first person in history to walk to both the North and South poles. Swan has dedicated his life to the preservation of Antarctica by the promotion of recycling, renewable energy and sustainability to combat the effects of climate change. In the year 2041 the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty could potentially be modified or amended. Our aim is to work towards the continuing protection of the Antarctic Treaty so that the last great wilderness on earth is never exploited. StreamServe supports 2041 and has sponsored a student to travel to Antartica with Robert and provide live blogs during this journey.

Endorsement for Anurag Maloo's International Antarctic Expedition 2013 by Robert Swan, OBE
About Sir Robert Swan, 2041 and IAE 2013
On February 28th 2013, the Inspire International Antarctic Youth Expedition (IAE 2013) will set off to the Antarctica for 15 days; Sir Robert Swan (OBE), the leader of the expedition has selected and invited me to represent the India and join him for the "Leadership on the Edge" program (since 2003 onwards) with 60 other young leaders worldwide from more than 40 countries to be the part of the expedition. Personal Endorsement letter for me by Robert Swan to join him for the expedition.
Mr Swan, founder of 2041, is the first person to walk to both North and South Poles unaided and is the foremost expert in Antarctic environmentalism, dedicating his life to the preservation of Antarctica. He started his passion for environmentalism while he was on his expedition to the South Pole, as his eyes turned to ash grey due to the prolonged exposure to the sun under the hole in the ozone layer.
After 23 years of sustainable leadership and teamwork experience, Robert Swan led the first corporate expedition to Antarctica in 2003. Since then, the annual expedition consists of up to 70 members, men and women from international industry and business, along with teachers and young people. Team members are inspired to create extraordinary results through leadership, teamwork and personal development.
Expedition members gain firsthand knowledge of the continent’s fragile ecosystem, the effects of climate change in Antarctica and shedding light on the re-negotiation of the Protocol of Antarctic Protection Treaty in 2041. Currently, mining and drilling operations are not to take place in the Antarctic, which can change in 2041.They have the opportunity to share knowledge across cultural boundaries, and to create essential partnerships that will drive their leadership on strategic climate solutions upon their return.
IAE aims to create an international youth coalition of Antarctic defenders who will champion renewable energy as their path to saving the continent. They will do so by initiating change in their communities with a larger goal of spreading awareness about Antarctica at an international level. Another important aim as well is to schedule seminars at schools and universities to educate the local community on their impact and on how they can make a difference.
About Me
I often wonder why dreams are important. As in, why are they really important? Why did I ask every child on the first day of school what they want to become when they grow big?
Is it because they make us get up every morning as opposed to continue lazing around? Is it because if I see it in a larger way, they make us persevere and hope for a better day? Or is it because they comfort us by showing us what life can be? This is what my students need - this is what each one of us needs.
As I work towards making the dreams of my students come true, I need a hand to make my dream come true. The expedition to Antarctica, post which I know I will be more resilient in the face of challenges, I will have a larger network of like minded people to share thoughts and actions plans with and more stories to share with my students.
Stories of sustainable environments, stories of a better future and more importantly stories of dreams coming true!
I am Anurag Maloo, an engineer and software technologist by education, a teacher, Teach For India fellow and an educator by profession, a traveler by passion and a committed earth volunteer by responsibility.
As a Teach For India fellow, I teach in a low-income under-resourced school in Pune, teaching young kids is a difficult task and when one has to make the entire curriculum along with the daily schedule everyday, organising field trips to visit communities from where kids come, taking up school transformation projects to community initiatives to bring sustainable change for the coming years. Friends better know me for my passion, and fondly calls me "Passionate Maloo" and my Program Manager strongly believes that I exemplify the core leadership values of perseverance and patience, and carries a high sense of possibility and achievement; and even I personally feel that my kids have taught me a lesson of these values in last 20 months.
Recently, I have been to Pakistan for a Peace Congregation of youth representing India with few other fellow Indians as an Indian Youth Delegate for 2nd South Asian Youth Conference in Islamabad, on Peace, Education and Sustainable Development. I have also started an initiative "The Family of Global Volunteers", supported by Robert Swan himself and it got listed on 2041's website. I am going to be the youngest Indian teacher who will represent India there in Antarctica in the history and to make it happen; I look for your support and the support of Indians.

Speechless Concept:
I want to show you some of these phenomenal remote spots that I'm incredibly lucky to visit on my expeditions and make them feel as real as possible to share the experience.
So I've decided that maybe the best way to do this is strip down the video, with raw footage only, no music, no David Attenborough, no fancy editing and no touching up. As it was on the day.
And maybe, with no one telling you what to think and no music to stir the emotions, maybe it will be quite refreshing, and a lot more real?
From Wikipedia:
Deception Island is an island in South Shetland off the Antarctic Peninsula, which has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which caused serious damage to the local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station; it is now a tourist destination and scientific outpost, with research bases being run by Argentina and Spain. Various countries have previously asserted sovereignty, but it is now administered under the Antarctic Treaty System.
