Daniel Kerr

Daniel Matthew Kerr (born 16 May 1983) is a former Australian rules footballer who played his entire career with the West Coast Eagles of the Australian Football League (AFL). Kerr was recruited from East Fremantle Football Club and made his debut in 2001. He was a hard-running midfielder who was a vital part of the midfield at the Eagles. He retired from football at the end of the 2013 season.

Background

Kerr is of Anglo-Indian descent. His father, Roger Kerr, was born in Calcutta to an English father and an Indian mother and played for East Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). His sister Samantha Kerr plays for the Australia national women's soccer team and Perth Glory W-League in the W-League (Australia). Kerr is a second cousin of former Fremantle player Shaun McManus.

Football career

Kerr was selected with the number 18 pick in the 2000 AFL Draft. Kerr is widely known as one of the toughest players in the AFL. In August 2006, the much bigger Fraser Gehrig considered one of the strongest players in the AFL, tried to palm off a tackle by Kerr, only to have Kerr resist and re-tackle Gehrig, with the result being the umpire rewarding Kerr with a "holding the ball" decision. Similarly, his physical strength was further demonstrated in round one in the 2007 AFL season against the Sydney Swans when he successfully tackled and took down the far bigger Barry Hall in the goalsquare.

Daniel Kerr (politician)

Daniel Kerr (June 18, 1836 - October 8, 1916) was a two-term Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa's 5th congressional district in the 1880s, who later switched parties.

Born near Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, Kerr emigrated to the United States with his parents, Hugh Kerr and Margaret Galt, settling in Madison County, Illinois, in 1841. He attended the common schools. Kerr graduated from McKendree College in 1858. On November 9, 1861, he was united in marriage to Clara Theresa Estabrook in Edwardsville, Illinois. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1862 and commenced practice in Edwardsville, Illinois.

He enlisted in the Union Army on August 12, 1862. He was promoted to second lieutenant, Company G, 117th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in 1863 and to first lieutenant in 1864.

He served as member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1868, serving until 1870. In 1870 he moved to Grundy Center, Iowa, where he continued to practice law, and also farmed. He was a school director in 1875.

In the United States, the U.S. Social Security Administration reports that Daniel has peaked as the fifth most popular name for newborns in 1985, 1990, 2007, and 2008. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that in the 2000 census, "Daniels" was the 182nd most common surname in the U.S., while "McDaniel" was ranked at 323, and "Daniel" (without a final "s") was ranked at 380.

Daniel (Bat for Lashes song)

"Daniel" is a song by English recording artist Bat for Lashes, from her second studio album, Two Suns. It is her best selling single to date, selling over 46,000 copies worldwide. The song was announced as the lead single from Two Suns in January 2009, then released as a digital download single on 1 March 2009, and as a 7" vinyl single on 6 April 2009. The track was written by Natasha Khan and produced by David Kosten, as with all tracks on the album. Ira Wolf Tuton from Yeasayer provided the bass lines for the song and Khan did the rest of the instrumentation herself. Khan said in an interview with The Sun newspaper that "Daniel" is based on a fictional character that she fell in love with as a teenager. The single's cover features Khan with an image of the character Daniel LaRusso, from the film The Karate Kid, painted on her back. A character much like LaRusso also features at the end of the music video which goes with the song. The B-side of the 7" is a cover version of a 1980 single by The Cure.

Daniel (department store)

Daniel is an English department store chain and Royal Warrant holder, with its flagship store situated in central Windsor. It was established in 1901 by Walter James Daniel, and is privately owned.
