Nonvascular Plants | Biology
To purchase this program please visit www.greatpacificmedia.com Segment from the program Kingdom Plantae: Builders of Biomes. DVD Description Our Plant DVD starts by looking at the watery origins of modern land plants before looking at the adaptations that have evolved in plants and enabled them to spread to nearly every corner of the Earth. These adaptations include: roots, which anchor plants and absorb water and nutrients from the soil; vessels, that conduct water and nutrients throughout a plant; lignin, which stiffens and supports plants enabling them to grow taller; pollen, which frees plants from a dependence on water for reproduction; and fruits, which entice animals to unwittingly spread a plants seeds far and wide.

Bryophytes
For more information, log on to- shomusbiology.weebly.com Download the study materials here- shomusbiology.weebly.com This video tutorial describes the life cycle of bryophytes and it also demonstrates the complex yet effective task that has been done by bryophytes to make the journey from water to land areas. Bryophyte is a traditional name used to refer to all embryophytes (land plants) that do not have true vascular tissue and are therefore called 'non-vascular plants'.[1] Some bryophytes do have specialized tissues for the transport of water; however since these do not contain lignin, they are not considered to be true vascular tissue.[2] Currently bryophytes are thought not to be a natural or monophyletic group; however the name is convenient and remains in use as a collective term for mosses, hornworts, and liverworts. Bryophytes produce enclosed reproductive structures (gametangia and sporangia), but they produce neither flowers nor seeds, reproducing via spores. The term bryophyte comes from Greek βρύον, bryon, "tree-moss, oyster-green" + φυτόν - phyton "plant".

The Sex Lives of Nonvascular Plants: Alternation of Generations - Crash Course Biology #36
Hank introduces us to nonvascular plants - liverworts, hornworts & mosses - which have bizarre features, kooky habits, and strange sex lives. Nonvascular plants inherited their reproductive cycle from algae, but have perfected it to the point where it is now used by all plants in one way or another, and has even left traces in our own reproductive systems. Evolution of bryophytes.mp4
For more information, log on to- shomusbiology.weebly.com Download the study materials here- shomusbiology.weebly.com Traditionally, all living land plants without vascular tissues were classified in a single taxonomic group, often a division (or phylum). More recently, phylogenetic research has questioned whether the bryophytes form a monophyletic group and thus whether they should form a single taxon. A broad consensus among systematists has recently emerged that bryophytes as a whole are not a natural group (ie are paraphyletic), although each of the three extant (living) groups is monophyletic.[3][4] The three lineages are Marchantiophyta (liverworts), Bryophyta (mosses) and Anthocerotophyta (hornworts).[5] The vascular plants or tracheophytes are the fourth lineage of living land plants. Currently there is some uncertainty over the exact evolutionary relationships among these four lineages, although this may be nearing resolution as data on a variety of coding and non-coding DNA sequences from all three genomes (chloroplast, mitochondrion and nucleus) in addition to protein sequences are brought to bear on the problem.[6] Although a 2005 study supported the traditional view that the bryophytes form a monophyletic group,[7] the preponderance of currently available evidence suggests that the hornworts are sister to vascular plants and liverworts are sister to all other land plants, as shown in the cladogram below.

Ravine bryophyte videos [Ceunant Dulyn - Plagiochila exigua site]
Ceunant Dulyn in north Wales supports abundant mosses and liverworts. Its rarest species grow near rocky cascades. The liverwort Petty Featherwort (Plagiochila exigua) is found on the downstream side of a boulder by this cascade, near the clipboard (LHS of screen). The video pans to show the area downstream of the cascade, where the river is more level, then zooms towards the cascade itself. The level area has no spray and the cascade has abundant spray. There is a visible mist zone, with saturated, humid air, around the cascade. The Petty Featherwort grows in this mist zone but where boulders protect it from direct hits by river flows.
