Louis Lucien Bonaparte

Louis Lucien Bonaparte (4 January 1813 – 3 November 1891) was the third son of Napoleon's second surviving brother, Lucien Bonaparte. He was born at Thorngrove, a mansion in Grimley, Worcestershire, England, where his family were temporarily interned after having been captured by the British en route to America.

A philologist and politician, he spent his youth in Italy and did not go to France until 1848, when he served two brief terms in the Assembly as representative for Corsica (1848) and for the Seine départements (1849) before moving to London, where he spent most of the remainder of his life.

His classification of dialects of the Basque language is still used.

He also denounced William Pryce for having plagiarized the research of Edward Lhuyd into Cornish and other Celtic languages.

Louis Lucien Bonaparte died at Fano, Italy. He is buried at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Kensal Green.

Lucien Bonaparte, Prince Français, 1st Prince of Canino and Musignano (21 May 1775 – 29 June 1840), born Luciano Buonaparte, was the third surviving son of Carlo Buonaparte and his wife Letizia Ramolino.

Lucien was a younger brother of Joseph and Napoleon Bonaparte, and an older brother of Elisa, Louis, Pauline, Caroline and Jérôme Bonaparte. Lucien held genuinely revolutionary views, which led to an often abrasive relationship with his brother Napoleon, who seized control of the French government in 1799, when Lucien was 24.

Life and career

Lucien Bonaparte's rise to power, unlike his younger brothers, was not based on familial connections or nepotism. This caused friction between him and his brother Napoleon I, later on.

Youth

Lucien was born in Ajaccio, Corsica in 1775, and was educated in mainland France, at the College d'Autun, the military school in Brienne, and at seminary in Aix-en-Provence. In 1769 the Corsican Republic had been conquered by French forces and annexed into France. Lucien's father Carlo Bonaparte had been a strong supporter of Corsican patriots under Pasquale Paoli, but later switched to become a supporter of French rule.

Lucien Bonaparte (cardinal)

Lucien Louis Joseph Napoleon Cardinal Bonaparte, 4th Prince of Canino and Musignano (15 November 1828 – 19 November 1895), was a French cardinal. He was born in Rome, the son of Charles Lucien Bonaparte and his wife Zénaïde Bonaparte.

His paternal grandparents were Lucien Bonaparte and his second wife Alexandrine de Bleschamp. His maternal grandparents were Joseph Bonaparte and Julie Clary. His godfather was the future Napoleon III, first cousin to both his parents.

Cardinal Bonaparte was ordained to the priesthood on 13 December 1856 by Pope Pius IX, giving up his Italian title. He served at numerous posts both in France and in Italy. He was created Cardinal of Santa Pudenziana in 1868. In 1879, he was given the additional title of Cardinal Priest of S. Lorenzo in Lucina. Cardinal Bonaparte participated in the First Vatican Council. He also was one of the voting cardinals that elected Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele Luigi Cardinal Pecci, as Pope Leo XIII. He died in 1895 and was buried in Rome.
