Boswell Sisters "It's The Girl" on Brunswick 6151 (1931) HOT JAZZ & SINGING
Boswell Sisters "It's The Girl" on Brunswick 6151 (1931) HOT JAZZ & SINGING
The Boswell Sisters sing close harmony on "It's The Girl" on Brunswick 6151, recorded on July 8, 1931. This is my favorite Boswell Sisters record! This catchy 1931 song is by Dave Oppenheimer and Abel Baer. Steve Martin does a great job miming this in the film Pennies From Heaven. The three sisters are accompanied by Victor Young's House Orchestra. Musicians include Mannie Klein or Jack Purvis (trumpet), Tommy Dorsey (trombone), Jimmy Dorsey (reed--clarinet or alto sax), Joe Venuti (violin), Arthur Schutt (piano), Eddie Lang (guitar), Joe Tarto (string bass), and Stan King (drums). The three sisters are Martha Boswell (June 9, 1905 - July 2, 1958), Connee Boswell (December 3, 1907 - October 11, 1976), and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell (May 20, 1911 - November 12, 1988). Martha is oldest, "Vet" is youngest, and Connie is in the middle. Connie is the one sister who would later "make it" as a solo artist, singing without her siblings and selling many discs. She had the finest voice among the three. The sister act broke up when two took marriage vows in the mid-1930s. Connie, who was paralyzed by a fall as child, carried on as soloist. She eventually changed the spelling of the name to Connee. Martha, a fine piano player, later in life tried to restart her singing career, using the name Martha Boswell Lloyd. The siblings were raised in a middle-class home on Camp Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. Martha and Connie were born in Kansas City, Missouri. Helvetia was born in Birmingham, Alabama. They made their first recordings for Victor Records in 1925, but these did not sell. They had not matured as vocal artists--they would soon be influenced by Paul Whiteman's Rhythm Boys (with Bing Crosby). When the Boswell Sisters moved to New York City in 1931 and performed for national radio broadcasts, they caught on. They were popular, yet their records are not common since their hit their peak during the worst years of the Depression, when relatively few discs sold no matter the artist or song. Brunswick records featuring the Boswell are highly prized by record collectors. The sisters made numerous recordings for Brunswick Records from 1931-1935. Connie would go on to make many Decca records, sometimes with Bing Crosby (the man who influenced Connie and many others when the baritone sang as one of the Rhythm Boys). Connie herself influenced many singers, including Ella Fitzgerald.- published: 13 Apr 2014
