A new democratic revolution is sweeping northern Europe - Nigel Farage
www.ukipmeps.org • European Parliament, Strasbourg - 28 September 2011 •Speaker Nigel Farage MEP, UKIP, Co-President of the EFD Group in the European Parliament (Europe of Freedom and Democracy) • Debate: State of the Union address by the President of the Commission, José Manuel Barroso • Speech Transcript: Mr Barroso, You told us this morning that the European Union is an inspiration. And whilst you admitted to there being one or two little economic problems, you made it perfectly clear that jobs and growth were to follow, that everything is going well - in fact you painted a vision that a new period of European renewal is upon us. Now as a former communist yourself you probably remember the old soviet leaders getting up to give their speeches and telling everybody that there was a record harvest, or that tractor production figures were terribly good. And they of course believed that history was on their side and in fact President Krushchev got up and said to the West 'We will bury you," so much did he believe in his own Union. Well now of course we look back at that and we laugh. And I think in our tomorrows, people will look back at you, and they will say 'how did this unelected man get all of this power?' And how did Europe's political class sitting in this room decide that the community method [federal] should replace national democracy. I think people will look back in astonishment that we've surrendered democracy. But what you want to do is to say, right, we have a ...

My Estonia
Estonia is a country in Northern Europe in the Baltic region. It is bordered to the north by Finland across the Gulf of Finland, to the west by Sweden, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by the Russian Federation. The territory of Estonia covers 45226 km² and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. The Estonians are a Finnic people closely related to the Finns, with the Estonian language sharing many similarities to Finnish. Estonia is a democratic parliamentary republic and is divided into fifteen counties. The capital and largest city is Tallinn. Estonia has been a member of the United Nations since 17 September 1991 of the European Union since 1 May 2004 and of NATO since 29 March 2004. Estonia has also signed the Kyoto protocol. With only 1.3 million inhabitants, it comprises one of the smallest populations of the European Union countries. Video music by Urmas Alender - Minu Eestimaa

The first Britons: by Nature Video
A haul of stone tools unearthed from a beach in England hints that humans were living in northern Europe far earlier than we thought - and in a cold climate. The finding suggests that the first Britons were a hardy bunch, able to thrive in Scandinavian-like conditions. Read the original research here: dx.doi.org

Murmansk-Nordkapp - 10'000km on a Suzuki SV650S
Four weeks of riding through the most beautiful places northern Europe has to offer. Northern Europe (Scandinavia and adjoining north-western part of Russia) is a place full of history and interesting places. Vast and sparsely populated landscapes, harsh climate and great nature formed people and culture and make this one of the prime destinations for motorcycle travel in Europe. From the taiga in russian Karelia to Kola Peninsula and Murmansk, through the sparse landscapes of northern Norway between Kirkenes, Hamningberg and the famous Nordkapp. From the northernmost road on continental Europe through finnish and swedish Lapland on to the Lofoten and along the norwegian coast through fjords and mountains. You have to see this place for yourself! If you want to make a similar trip or ride parts of my route, here is what my route looked like: After riding the car train (DB Autozug) from Lörrach to Hamburg, the ferry from Germany (Travemünde) brought me to Helsinki, where I headed east towards the russian border - to Санкт Петербург (Saint-Petersburg). After sightseeing for a day, I headed north on the Magistrale 18 (Кола) through Петрозаводск (Petrozavodsk), Медвежьегорск (Medvezhyegorsk ) and Мончегорск (Monchegorsk) and arrived in Murmansk (Мурманск) a few days later. Next on the plan was riding to Norway (Kirkenes), from where I took two detours to Grense Jakobselv and Hamningberg, before I rode to the Nordkapp. Back south through a bit of finnish Lapland and Sweden ...

19. The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000: Charlemagne
The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) In this lecture, Professor Freedman discusses the Carolingian dynasty from its origins through its culmination in the figure of Charlemagne. The Carolingians sought to overthrow the much weakened Merovingian dynasty by establishing their political legitimacy on three bases: war leadership, Christian rule, and the legacy of Rome. Charlemagne's grandfather Charles Martel won a major victory over the Muslims in 733 at the Battle of Poitiers. Charlemagne's father Pepin the Short allied the Carolingians with the papacy at a time when the latter was looking for a new protector. Charlemagne, crowned emperor in Rome by Pope Leo III in 800, made strides in reestablishing the Roman Empire; although, being centered in northern Europe, his was not an exact imitation of the Roman Empire. Professor Freedman concludes the lecture with the observation that Charlemagne can be considered the founder of Europe as a political and cultural expression. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction 07:43 - Chapter 2. The Last Years of the Merovingians 16:46 - Chapter 3. Establishing Carolingian Legitimacy 27:25 - Chapter 4. Charles Martel and Pepin the Short 34:54 - Chapter 5.
