CAIRO, Jan 27, 2013 - Thousands of mourners marched on Sunday in the Egyptian canal city of Port Said at the funeral of people killed in clashes triggered by death sentences on supporters of a local football team. Bodies wrapped in white shrouds were carried in open coffins by a sea of mourners along the city's main avenue. A brief burst of gunfire sent mourners running in several directions amid chaotic scenes before calm was restored. "Our city is being hit by the interior ministry!" and "Down with Brotherhood rule!" chanted the crowd. On Saturday, 31 people were killed in the canal city in clashes with police after a Cairo court handed down death sentences on 21 supporters of Port Said's Al-Masry football club. There was no police presence securing Sunday's funeral, and shops and businesses remained closed for a second day, witnesses said. The burials come after a day of rioting in Port Said and Suez and deadly protests in Cairo against President Mohamed Morsi, highlighting deep political divisions and long-standing tensions between police and protesters. In Cairo, overnight clashes on the outskirts of Tahrir Square -- the symbolic heart of the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak in 2011 -- continued into Sunday, with one bridge blocked off and the heavy smell of tear gas hanging in the air. Overnight, demonstrators blocked the 6 October bridge, a vital flyover linking east and west Cairo, and burned cars as police clashed with masked protesters on the Nile corniche ...

www.euronews.com Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has announced her abdication in favour of her son Prince Willem-Alexander. The oldest reigning monarch in Dutch history, Beatrix will turn 75 in a few days time. She was crowned in 1980 and is the sixth monarch of the House of Orange. Dutch pinion polls showed that, while Beatrix remained popular, the majority believed she should step aside for Prince Willem-Alexander, aged 44. Although there is no requirement for a Dutch monarch to abdicate at a certain age, it has been a tradition in the House of Orange. Beatrix became queen when her mother Queen Juliana chose to step down in her favour. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has declared a 30-day state of emergency and a night-time curfew in three cities along the Suez Canal that have seen deadly clashes in recent days. In a televised address late on Sunday, Morsi said the emergency measures in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez would take effect on Monday from 9pm local time (1900 GMT) to 6am (0400 GMT), warning to take more action to stem the latest eruption of violence across much of the country. Meanwhile, in Port Said, at least seven people were killed and 630 others injured on Sunday during the funerals of people killed at the weekend in clashes triggered by death sentences on supporters of a local football team. Cairo (CNN) -- Horrified eyewitnesses described how Egyptian police officers stood by as violent clashes between rival fans at a football match in the northeastern city of Port Said left scores dead. Hundreds of supporters of clubs Al-Ahly and Al-Masry were critically injured in the attacks and as they tried to flee. The violence is one of the world's worst sporting disasters and prompted officials to suspend indefinitely Egypt's football premier league. The attacks started out of sight of television cameras in the stadium's hallways and terraces. When the referee blew the final whistle, thousands of Al-Masry home team fans stormed the pitch despite their team's hard-fought 3-1 victory. See high-res images of the riots Police conscripts then stood by as rival fans attacked each other with rocks and chairs. "The police did nothing to stop it," Amr Khamis, an Ahly supporter told CNN at the train station in Cairo after returning from the match. "Officers refused to open the gates of the stadium so we could not escape and had to face thousands of Al-Masry hooligans attacking with rocks, knives, swords and anything else you can imagine." Mamdouh Eid, executive manager of the Al-Ahly fans committee, also blamed officers. "The police stood there watching, and the ambulances arrived late. I carried several dead fans in my arms," he said. Tension was building throughout the game, Eid said, as Port Said fans threw bottles and rocks at players. Hours after the match ended, thousands ...
