Autostadt

The Autostadt is a visitor attraction adjacent to the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, with a prime focus on automobiles. It features a museum, feature pavilions for the principal automobile brands in the Volkswagen Group, a customer centre where customers can pick up new cars, and take a tour through the enormous factory, a guide to the evolution of roads, and cinema in a large sphere. It is also home to the largest glass doors in the world and the longest printed line. The line starts from outside Wolfsburg and travels through Autostadt to a point on a farm. It is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long.
The idea for Autostadt was started in 1994 when the concept of documenting the stages of production of Volkswagen vehicles and how the company's operations were showcased at Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany. In 1998, Autostadt, which is German for "Car City", broke ground on the former site of a fuel company bordering Volkswagen's Wolfsburg production plant. Like the adjacent car plant, the site of Autostadt is on the north bank of the Mittellandkanal which appears to have inspired considerable creativity in the projects' designers. The resulting complex is the work of more than 400 architects, created as a new urban center, close to downtown Wolfsburg.

Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. is an automobile manufacturer located in Molsheim, Alsace, France. It is owned by the German automobile manufacturing group Volkswagen Group as a subsidiary of Volkswagen France. It was founded in 2000 as a successor to Bugatti Automobili SpA
At the urging of then-chairman Ferdinand Piëch, Volkswagen purchased the rights to produce cars under the Bugatti marque in 1998. This followed the earlier Volkswagen purchases of the Lamborghini marque (by VW's Audi subsidiary), the Rolls-Royce factory in Crewe, United Kingdom, and the Bentley marque.
On 22 December 2000, Volkswagen officially incorporated Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., with former VW drivetrain chief Karl-Heinz Neumann as president. The company purchased the 1856 Château Saint Jean, formerly Ettore Bugatti's guest house in Dorlisheim, near Molsheim, and began refurbishing it to serve as the company's headquarters. The original factory was still in the hands of Snecma, who were unwilling to part with it. At the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August 2000, VW announced that they would instead build a new modern atelier (factory) next to and south of the Château. The atelier was officially inaugurated on 3 September 2005.

Moncalieri
Moncalieri is a town and comune of approximately 58,000 inhabitants about eight kilometers directly south of downtown Turin (to whose province it belongs), in Piedmont, Italy. It is notable for its castle, built in the 12th century and enlarged in the 15th century, which later became the favorite residence of Maria Clotilde and Victor Emmanuel II of Italy. It is part of the World Heritage Site Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.
Moncalieri was founded in 1228 by some inhabitants of Testona (now a frazione of the comune of Moncalieri) as a refuge from the assaults from Chieri. The easy access to the Po River and the bridge (a Templar possession for a long time) that it commanded granted a certain flourishing to the city, which became a free comune and housed a number of monastic institutions.
In the 17th century it was acquired by the House of Savoy, whose members often lived in their castle here during the summer. During the unification of Italy it was the site of the famous Proclamation of Moncalieri. Having maintained its tradition as a summer resort, today Moncalieri is also home to many high technology companies.

Shanghai Volkswagen (officially Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd., informally SVW, simplified Chinese: 上海大众汽车; traditional Chinese: 上海大眾汽車) is a joint venture company between Volkswagen Group and SAIC Motor established in 1984. The company is headquartered in Anting International Auto City, northwest of Shanghai city, in the People's Republic of China.
The joint venture is made up of equity from (as of 2008) - Volkswagen AG (40%), Volkswagen (China) Invest (10%), SAIC (50%), with a fixed-term venture for 45 years. It will run until 2030. SVW produces cars under the Volkswagen and Škodamarques.
SVW produced approximately 700,000 cars in 2009.
SVW was formed in 1984, as a joint venture between Volkswagen and SAIC. This was a 25-year contract to make passenger cars in Shanghai with a limit of 50 per cent foreign ownership.
SVW Shanghai plant was by the far the winner among all new JVs, as it produced cars that could function as taxis, vehicles for government officials and transport for the newly emerging business elite. SVW began automobile production in 1985. As car imports fell to some 34,000 in 1990, Shanghai-Volkswagen’s (SVW’s) production of its Santana models reached nearly 19,000 vehicles that year. By 1993, SVW’s output had reached 100,000 vehicles. Volkswagen was aided by some Shanghai municipal efforts. Various restrictions on engine size, as well as incentives to city taxi companies, helped ensure a safe market in the company’s relatively wealthy home arena. Volkswagen also encouraged its foreign parts suppliers to create joint ventures in China, and their resulting product helped SVW achieve an 85 per cent local content rate by 1993.

Turin (Italian: Torino, pronounced [toˈriːno] (

The city has a rich culture and history, and is known for its numerous art galleries, restaurants, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, parks, gardens, theatres, libraries, museums and other venues. Turin is well known for its baroque, rococo, neo-classical, and Art Nouveau architecture. Much of the city's public squares, castles, gardens and elegant palazzi such as Palazzo Madama, were built in the 16th and 18th century, after the capital of the Duchy of Savoy (later Kingdom of Sardinia) was moved to Turin from Chambery( nowadays France) as part of the urban expansion.

Bernd Pischetsrieder
Dr. Bernd Peter Pischetsrieder (born (1948-02-15) 15 February 1948 (age 64)) is a German automobile engineer and manager.
He was born in Munich, Bavaria, and studied Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich from 1968 to 1972. He earned the degree of "Diplom-Ingenieur", and began his career at BMW in 1973 as a Production Planning Engineer. He was promoted to become chairman of the board of BMW from 1993 through 1999. He was also chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, the parent company of the Volkswagen Group, from 2002 to 2006, and chairman of Scania AB until 2007.
During his time as head of BMW, Pischetsrieder was known for solidifying the company's position as a leader in the luxury car market with a solid sporting and engineering reputation. His decision in 1994 to purchase Rover Group from British Aerospace was widely regarded as a failure on paper. Although many of the assets were sold at vast profit and the purchase brought the valuable Mini and Land Rover marques into BMW ownership, the Rover passenger car operation drained the company's coffers. Rover was sold off in 2000, with Ford taking on Land Rover, and the Mini brand remaining at BMW. A more lasting achievement was the assumption of the Rolls-Royce marque, a deal which left rival Volkswagen Group manager, Ferdinand Piëch, with only the Bentley marque, and the Crewe factory.

Carl Hahn
Dr. Carl Horst Hahn (born July 1, 1926, in Germany) is chairman emeritus of the automotive concern Volkswagen Group. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Management of the group's parent company, Volkswagen AG (formerly Volkswagenwerk AG) from 1982 to 1993. During his tenure as chairman, he expanded the group's car production from two million units in 1982 to 3.5 million a decade later.
Hahn was born in the German state of Saxony and raised near Chemnitz. His father had been a senior manager of DKW and Auto Union, which later evolved into the Audi car brand. As a college student in Europe, he studied business administration at the University of Cologne and the University of Zurich; he also studied economics and politics in Great Britain and France. Hahn got his doctorate in Economics at the University of Berne in Switzerland. Before joining Volkswagen, he first worked as an economist in Paris.
Hahn joined VW in 1953 as an assistant of chairman Heinrich Nordhoff, and he quickly became head of sales promotion in VW's export department. Hahn was a favorite of Nordhoff's, and the chairman made him president of the company's U.S. subsidiary, Volkswagen of America, in 1958.

Ferdinand Piëch
Ferdinand Karl Piëch (born 17 April 1937) is an Austrian business magnate, engineer and executive who is currently the chairman of the supervisory board of Volkswagen Group.
A grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, Piëch started his career at Porsche, before leaving for Audi after an agreement that no member of the Porsche or Piëch families should be involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. Piëch eventually became the head of Audi, where is credited with turning Audi into a credible competitor to Mercedes-Benz and BMW thanks in part to innovative designs such as the Quattro and 100. In 1993, Piëch became the chairman and CEO of Volkswagen Group, which he is credited with turning into the large conglomerate it is today; He oversaw the purchase of Lamborghini and Bentley, as well as the founding of Bugatti Automobiles, all of which he integrated with the Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT and Audi brands into a ladder-type structure similar to that used by Alfred Sloan at General Motors. Piëch was required to retire at age 65 per Volkswagen company policy, but has remained on its supervisory board and is still involved in the company's strategic decisions.

Giorgetto Giugiaro
Giorgetto Giugiaro (born 7 August 1938) is an Italian automobile designer responsible equally for a stable of supercars and several of the most popular everyday vehicles driven today. He was born in Garessio, Cuneo, Piedmont.
Giugiaro was named Car Designer of the Century 1999 and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002.
In addition to cars, Giugiaro has designed camera bodies for Nikon, computer prototypes for Apple, Navigation promenade of Porto Santo Stefano and even developed a new pasta shape "Marille", as well as office furniture for Okamura Corporation
Noted initially for such sensuous efforts as the Ferrari 250 Berlinetta Bertone, De Tomaso Mangusta, Iso Grifo and Maserati Ghibli, Giugiaro switched courses to introduce the highly angular "folded paper" era of the 1970s. Straight lined designs such as the BMW M1, Maserati Bora, and Maserati Merak followed before a softer approach returned in the Lamborghini Cala, Maserati Spyder, Ferrari GG50.

Heinrich Nordhoff
Heinz Heinrich Nordhoff (born 6 January 1899 in Hildesheim, died 12 April 1968 in Wolfsburg) was a German engineer famous for his leadership of the Volkswagen company as it was rebuilt after World War II.
Nordhoff attended technical college in Berlin, where he became a member of the Roman Catholic fraternity Askania-Burgundia, and in 1927, began work for BMW working on aircraft engines.
In 1929 he went to work for Opel where he gained experience of the automotive industry and rapid promotion. In 1936 he was the Commercial-Technical director who presented the company's innovative new small car, the Kadett to the public. In 1942, with passenger car production much diminished on account of the war, he took over as Production Director at the company's flagship truck plant at Brandenburg.
Following the war he obtained a job as a service manager at a Hamburg garage. Hamburg was a central location for the British Military Government who recruited him for the position of Managing Director of the badly damaged Volkswagen plant at Wolfsburg. He assumed the position on 2 January 1948 from British Army Major Ivan Hirst (REME). During his first year in post Nordhoff doubled production to 19,244 cars. By the end of 1961 annual production exceeded a million vehicles.

Ivan Hirst
Major Ivan Hirst (4 March 1916 – 10 March 2000), was a British Army officer and engineer who was instrumental in reviving Volkswagen from a single factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, into a major postwar automotive manufacturer.
Hirst was born in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England and attended the Hulme Grammar School in Oldham. Hirst's family had founded the Hirst Brothers Company, a manufacturer of watches, clocks and optical components in Oldham. Hirst studied optical engineering at the University of Manchester, prior to forming his own company repairing optical instruments. While a student he was a member of the university's Officers' Training Corps contingent.
Hirst was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment (Territorial Army) on 27 June 1934, and promoted to lieutenant three years later. A Captain on the outbreak of the Second World War, he was appointed adjutant on 1 October 1939. He transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) as a Mechanical Engineering Officer on 14 November 1941, and to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) on its formation on 1 October 1942. In the period after the D-Day landings he was in charge of a tank repair facility in Belgium. He landed in Germany in the summer of 1945, along with his colleague, Colonel Charles Radclyffe, when the British Army took control of the town of Wolfsburg. The original intention was to scrap the factory and use the proceeds as war reparations. But Hirst found a pre-war prototype Volkswagen in a remote workshop on the site and realised that the factory could be used for producing cars for the British Army. Hence, Hirst and Radclyffe laid the foundations for Volkswagen's successful automotive business.

Kurt Lotz
Dr. Kurt Lotz (18 September 1912 – 9 March 2005) was the second post-war Chief executive officer (CEO) of the Volkswagen automobile company in Germany. He was nominated in April 1967 to succeed the legendary Heinrich Nordhoff at the end of December 1968. Sadly, promotion arrived early when Nordhoff died in April 1968.
Lotz was the son of a farmer from the German state of Hesse. During World War II, he became a Luftwaffe general-staff Major, assigned to assessing needs for the military, which Lotz later looked back on as his first experience with industrial planning on a major scale.
After the war, Lotz worked as a clerk in Mannheim with the German subsidiary of the Swiss electrical company Brown, Boveri & Cie, which makes all kinds of electrical equipment from home appliances to locomotives. Within twelve years, Lotz rose to chairman. He attempted to diversify the firm, by investing in a small computer company to compete with American computer companies, but when it lost money, a rift between Lotz and his Swiss superiors ensued, and he left. By the time he agreed to become Nordhoff's successor at Volkswagen, he was thought of as a wunderkind of German industry for his rapid rise to the top.

Martin Winterkorn (born 24 May 1947 in Leonberg, Germany) is the Chairman of the Board of Management (CEO) of Volkswagen AG, the parent company of the Volkswagen Group, and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Audi and Porsche Automobil Holding SE.
He succeeded Bernd Pischetsrieder as CEO of Volkswagen AG in 2007. Prior to that, he had been the Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group subsidiary Audi AG.
Winterkorn studied metallurgy and metal physics at the University of Stuttgart from 1966 to 1973. From 1973 to 1977 he was a Ph.D student at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metal Research and Metal Physics, where he received his doctorate in 1977.
Winterkorn embarked on his career in 1977, as a specialist assistant in the research division "Process Engineering" at Robert Bosch GmbH. From 1978 to 1981, he headed the refrigerant compressor development group "Substances and Processes" at Robert Bosch GmbH and Bosch-Siemens-Hausgeräte GmbH.
In 1993 Winterkorn became head of "Group Quality Assurance" at Volkswagen AG, and was appointed General Manager of Volkswagen AG with power of attorney in March 1994. He was additionally responsible for VW Group Product Management from June 1995. In January 1996, Winterkorn took over from Herbert Schuster as Member of the Brand Board of Management for "Technical Development" for the Volkswagen brand. From July 2000, he was Member of the VW Group Board of Management for Technical Development. Winterkorn was instrumental in getting Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piech to approve the production of the New Beetle.

Rudolf Leiding
Dr. Ing. h.c. Rudolf Leiding (4 September 1914 – 3 September 2003) was the third post-war chairman of the Volkswagen automobile company (Volkswagenwerk AG), succeeding Kurt Lotz in 1971.
Leiding began his career with Volkswagen at Wolfsburg in 1945 where he was responsible for the repair of army vehicles. Professor Nordhoff then charged him with setting up the first postwar Wolsburg assembly line, using such parts as he could find. Leiding's ingenuity at this task led to promotion, and Leiding found himself sent to the USA to oprganize the first VW service network there. Between 1958 and 1965 he was the first director of the VW works in Kassel. Subsequently he transferred to Auto Union GmbH in Ingolstadt where he became chairman of the board, presiding during the company's development of the successful Audi 100.

Toni Schmücker
Toni Schmücker (23 April 1921 in Frechen – 6 November 1996 in Bergisch Gladbach) was the fourth chief executive officer of the Volkswagen automobile company (Volkswagenwerk AG), following the handover of the company in 1948 to German control from the British, who had administered the VW factory in Wolfsburg, Germany after the Second World War ended.
Schmücker's automotive experience came from a long successful career with Ford at Cologne where he began his career as a commercial apprentice when aged 16. He returned to Ford in 1946, following his military service, working successively in the sales, finance and export departments. He was appointed Purchasing Manager in 1956 and joined the management board in 1961. He was appointed Sales manager in 1967 before leaving to become Chairman of Rheinstahl in 1968.
He became Chairman of the Volkswagen board in February 1975, succeeding Rudolf Leiding. Schmücker brought to the job a combination of political skill and personal charm that had eluded his two immediate predecessors: his authority within the company was also enhanced by the extent of the financial crisis that directly preceded his appointment and which had appeared to place the very survival of the business in doubt. At the time of Schmücker's assumption of the job, Volkswagen had just staved off bankruptcy with the introduction of the Volkswagen Golf (marketed as the Rabbit in North America and as the Caribe in Latin America), which would eventually replace the Volkswagen Beetle. One of Schmücker's first achievements at Wolfsburg involved reducing the Volkswagen workforce by 25,000 employees during 1975, applying, in the words of a contemporary industry commentator, methods and systems he had learned at Ford. The loss making assembly plant in Australia was closed, but after a period of rationalisation he placed the plants in Mexico and Brazil on a sounder footing for growth than that on which he had found them.

For the 2012 edition of the Geneva Motor Show, which is looking to be the biggest ever, Italian design house Italdesign Giugiaro came with a very special little conept for a four-seater GT car. The exterior of the car is not going to scare little children away, but there's plenty of crazy mixed in for good measure. For instance, instead of having regular mirrors, they been moved to... wait for it... the steering wheel! The car built by the Italdesign Giugiaro plant at Moncalieri is powered by a hybrid powertrain based on a VW Group 3.0-liter V6. The output sits at 360 hp, which results in a leisurely stroll to 100km/h (62mph) in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 275km/h (171mph). "2012 will be an important year for us and for the Group, and with this car we want to continue to allow people to dream and to imagine the future," said Giorgetto Giugiaro. It has grey racing stripes from front to back, black rims and a rather elegant spoiler, that makes it look much more sportsy. The car was modified by Affolter (swiss dealership) but it's actually called "Ital Design". However, to be perfectly honest, the car wasn't going really fast on the track! Almost as if it was doing it on purpose, being careful. Maybe the owner had some problems with the car, or maybe he was just being extremely vigilant for some reason. Oh well, even when it's not going mad on the track, the car still makes a good sound and is great to look at! :) This was during the 2012 GT Days at the Magny-Cours race track, to which I was invited by EAP (Emotion Auto Prestige) = big thanks to them !! It has grey racing stripes from front to back, black rims and a rather elegant spoiler, that makes it look much more sportsy. The car was modified by Affolter (swiss dealership) but it's actually called "Ital Design". However, to be perfectly honest, the car wasn't going really fast on the track! Almost as if it was doing it on purpose, being careful. Maybe the owner had some problems with the car, or maybe he was just being extremely vigilant for some reason. Oh well, even when it's not going mad on the track, the car still makes a good sound and is great to look at! :) This was during the 2012 GT Days at the Magny-Cours race track, to which I was invited by EAP (Emotion Auto Prestige) = big thanks to them !! At the eightieth edition of the Geneva International Motor show (4-14 March 2010), Italdesign Giugiaro is introducing Emas, a family of low environmental impact cars that is set to revolutionise traditional segmentation in the car market. Giorgetto Giugiaro and Aldo Mantovani founded Studi Italiani Realizzazione Prototipi S.p.A, the company that would eventually become Italdesign, on February 13, 1968 in Moncalieri, Italy.[1][2]
Volkswagen[link]
Volkswagen and Italdesign; have a history of working together that dates back to the early 1970s.
Current Volkswagen AG Chairman Ferdinand Piëch apprenticed at Italdesign during the summer of 1972, learning about engineering and design.[8] Italdesign is responsible for the design of several notable Volkswagen vehicles including the first generation Volkswagen Golf (1974), Volkswagen Scirocco (1974) and Volkswagen Passat (1973) and the Audi 80 (1974).[9]
In May 2010, Italdesign agreed to transfer 90.1% of its shares to Volkswagen subsidiary Lamborghini Holding S.p.A. in order to keep Volkswagen's Italian holdings bundled together. The purchase price was not disclosed. The Giugiaro family retained ownership of the remaining shares. Both Giorgetto Guigiaro and his son, Fabrizio Guigiaro, continue to have active roles in the company.[1][6][7][8]

Italdesign acquired SALLIG, a company founded in 1960 that designs and builds acrylic, cast iron and zamak matrices for automotive, auronautical and household appliance prototypes.[2]
Italdesign also acquired ETM, Engineering Technologies Methods, founded in 1984, which creates silicone prototypes, allowing the transition from an acrylic prototype to a more refined prototype with characteristics similar to the finished product.[2]
