French Troops Take Control of Airport in Kidal - Mali
French forces took control the airport in Kidal, seizing a key position in the last remaining urban stronghold of Islamist extremists in northern Mali, officials said Wednesday, with France's foreign minister said French forces would depart Mali "quickly." French and Malian troops have recaptured two of the other provincial capitals, Timbuktu and Gao, in recent days. Once France, with its thousands of troops, fighter planes and helicopters, leaves, Mali's weak army and soldiers from neighboring countries Islamists might be hard-pressed to retain control of northern Mali's cities if the Islamists attempt a comeback from their desert hideouts. "Now it's up to African countries to take over," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told Le Parisien newspaper. "We decided to put the means — in men and supplies — to make the mission succeed and hit hard. But the French aspect was never expected to be maintained. We will leave quickly." Haminy Maiga, the interim president of the Kidal regional assembly, said French forces met no resistance when they arrived late Tuesday. "The French arrived at 9:30 pm aboard four planes, which landed one after another. Afterwards they took the airport and then entered the town, and there was no combat," said Maiga, who had been in touch with people in the town by satellite phone as all the normal phone networks were down. "The French are patrolling the town and two helicopters are patrolling overhead," he added. In Paris, French army Col ...

Mali : French troops at the gates of Kidal, President Traore to organise elections by July 31
On Tuesday interim President Dioncounda Traore said he hoped to hold "transparent and credible" elections by July 31. Mali's parliament unanimously approved government proposals to start talks with "armed groups which do not threaten either the integrity or the secular nature" of the state. French troops were at the gates of the last major city in northern Mali still outside their control early Wednesday after their forces landed at the airport in Kidal, local sources said. "We confirm that French aircraft are on the Kidal landing strip and that protection helicopters are in the sky," said a regional security source and a senior Tuareg figure in Kidal also confirmed the report. A spokesman for the Islamic Movement of Azawad (IMA), which recently announced it had taken control of Kidal, said the French had landed there. "Our leader is currently talking with them." Kidal lies 1500 kilometres (930 miles) northeast of the capital Bamako and until recently was controlled by the Islamist group Ansar Dine (Defenders of the Faith). French Troops in Mali Take Kidal, Last Islamist Holdout.
French forces have secured the northern Malian town of Kidal, the last main stronghold of Islamist rebels in the region, military officials say. Militant Islamist fighters had already left the town, near the Algerian border, and are believed to be hiding in the surrounding mountains. The capture of Kidal came days after French and Malian forces retook the provincial capitals Gao and Timbuktu. Kidal official Haminy Maiga said the French troops had met no resistance. "The French arrived aboard four planes," said, Mr Maiga, who heads the regional assembly. "They took the airport and then entered the town, and there was no combat. The French are patrolling the town and two helicopters are patrolling overhead."

French soldiers have reportedly taken control of the airport Kidal in Mali
French soldiers have reportedly taken control of the airport in Kidal. Along with Gao and Timbuktu, it is the third large town in the north of Mali to be retaken from the control of armed Islamist groups in the last 48 hours. The French military, with the help of the Malian Army, have reestablished control in all three places without meeting much resistance. But there is disorder on the streets. In Timbuktu, there have been reports of looting of shops owned by those suspected of having helped the Islamist groups who have occupied the town since last year. International human rights groups also say some Malian troops have carried out revenge killings of suspected rebels and sympathisers in retaken areas. France wants international observers deployed to ensure human rights are respected.

Tuareg and other Mali rebels 'in talks' with the French in Kidal
www.euronews.com French forces say they have entered the northern Malian town of Kidal after taking over the airport. There are no signs of Islamists and two different groups say they are talking with the French. Kidal is the last urban bastion that had been in Islamist hands. The Islamic Movement of Azawad (IMA), a breakaway group from the Islamist Ansar Dine movement, says it rejects terrorism and claims to hold the town with Tuareg rebels. The secular National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), which backs the rights of Mali's Tuareg minority, also claims to have held talks with the French. Both groups do not want to see Malian troops in Kidal, fearing reprisals against Arab and Tuareg communities. The Islamist militants are thought to have taken refuge in the northern mountains. In Timbuktu, recently liberated by French and Malian forces, most precious Islamic manuscripts that had been feared destroyed are now thought to have been saved. They were reportedly hidden from Islamists before their arrival, or had been taken to the capital Bamako. People in Timbuktu have been making their most of their new re-found freedom after suffering Islamist repression, some singing and dancing in the streets. "Normal life can begin again, life as we knew it before, with art and our traditional music," smiled one woman. A man walzed as he sang a song he said he had written as a tribute to French President François Hollande. The Islamists not only banned music, they also ...

Mali's Tuareg separatism threat: rebel group declares control over Kidal and nearby region
Tuareg rebels in northern Mali have declared that they are in control of the northern stronghold of Kidal and a vast region around it. The MNLA or National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad seized control of northern Mali last year only to be pushed aside by better-armed Islamist groups. A French-led mission broke the Islamist militants' 10-month grip on Mali's northern towns last month, after the Islamists fled to the nearby desert and rugged Adrar des Ifoghas mountains. The territory claimed as Azawad roughly corresponds to the three northern regions of Mali which make up a zone larger than France. The term is thought to have linguistic links to the dried up Azawagh tributary of the giant Niger river which snakes through West Africa from Guinea to Nigeria.
