Pontresina (Romansh: Puntraschigna) is a municipality in the district of Maloja in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.
The city was first mentioned in medieval Latin documents as pontem sarasinam in 1137. In 1237 it was mentioned as de Ponte Sarraceno and in 1303 as ponte sarracino. Some historians translate it as The Bridge of the Saracens and see in it a reference to a tenth-century Arab invasion of the lands that later became Switzerland. It is essential though to have a bridge to use the Bernina pass and it would make sense to build this before the confluence of Ova da Bernina and Ova da Roseg due to the amount of water to cross.
Pontresina has an area, as of 2006, of 118.2 km2 (45.6 sq mi). Of this area, 16.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 8.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.6% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (72.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).
The municipality is located in the Oberengadin sub-district of the Maloja district. It sits in Val Bernina, which is the highest altitude valley that branches off the Upper Engadin Valley. The municipality includes the highest mountain of the canton, Piz Bernina. Other high summits are Piz Zupò and Piz Palü. Pontresina is a noted tourist destination in its own right, but is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor St. Moritz.
The Bernina Express is a train connecting Chur (or Davos) in Switzerland to Poschiavo and Tirano in Italy by crossing the Swiss Engadin Alps. For most of its journey, the train also runs along the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes.
The train is operated by the Rhaetian Railway company for the purpose of sightseeing. It takes the form of an enhanced regional service between Tirano and Chur or Davos: panoramic coaches with enlarged windows and multi-lingual (English, Italian and German) audio guide on board. It is not an express in the sense of being a high-speed train; passengers must make a seat reservation either directly when they purchase Bernina Express tickets, or pay a small supplement on top of their regional train tickets. The Bernina Express is popular with tourists and connects in Tirano with the Post Bus service via Lake Como in Italy to Lugano in Switzerland.
The Albula line and the Bernina line on the Bernina Express's route were jointly declared a World Heritage Site in 2008. The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a four-hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass at 2,253 metres above sea. The entire line is 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) (metre gauge) and electrified.
The clip focuses on the town of Pontresina, takes a look at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof and shows Bea Broda's first real skiing experience! Bea participated in the "Videographers in Residence" program of the Swiss National Tourist Office.

Pontresina is located in the highest-altitude valley that branches off from the Upper Engadine. It's a sunny place, protected from the winds, that lies on a slope opening towards the southwest. Pontresina continues to be a typical Engadine village, stretching along the valley's longitudinal axis. It is embedded in dense woods of larch and stone pine trees. Pontresina ascends from 1,777m to 1,860m above sea level. Pontresina is surrounded by the highest mountains of the east alps with the piz Bernina (4,049 m) and the Biancograt as its sign.

Tight turns, breathtaking drops and magnificent views make the 61 kilometer rail link between St. Moritz and Tirano, originally opened in 1906, into one of the most impressive sections of the Rhaetian Railway. Snow, wind and freezing temperatures make the battle with King Winter a though one for the Rhaetian Railway staff. This film shows the many faces of a Bemina winter between Pontresina and Poschiavo. Early morning snow clearance with the 9218. Fantastic panoramas of a sunny day between Ospizio Bemina and Alp Grüm, snow storms at the stations, the cold stillness of the almost deserted Cavaglia and wanderous images of the Dampf Schneeschleuder in its line clearing challenge. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► http://goo.gl/HYQdhg Join us. Pontresina has a great range of culinary delights to offer the epicure. From gourmet restaurant to the typical, rustic «Bünderstube»; right at the town centre, atop one of the majestic peaks, or in the romantic Val Roseg. So wide is the variety that it is hard to choose between local Grisons specialties, Asian or Italian creations, or the full array of international cuisine. Diversity characterises the ambience as well whether deluxe hotel, cosy Engadin «Stube» or modern and cosmopolitan setting nothing is lacking.

I took a short walk from the Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina, Switzerland and hiked toward the Roseg Glacier, which is about 8 miles southwest of the hotel. I hiked for about an hour and a half to get up to this point, which I think is about half way up. It was a beautiful hike, with the glacier and the glacial water coming down. If you want to take the easy way, across on the other side of the river there is a road and you can actually take a horse drawn carriage up to the restaurant near the glacier.
