Master's programme in Forensic science
Forensic Science is a complex and diverse field. An ever increasing amount of information can be obtained from an ever smaller amount of material. Scientific research yields new developments all the time, generating more advanced methods. Researchers must, therefore, be able to combine forensic expertise with sophisticated technologies in a multidisciplinary environment. The Research Master's programme in Forensic Science brings together a range of disciplines. Learn more: www.uva.nl

Blood Spatter Science at UC Davis - UCTV Prime Cuts
(Visit: www.uctv.tv What do forensic science students and engineers have in common? At UC Davis, it's an effort to find clues at a crime scene through the blood stain patterns left behind. A joint research project has a team of students and an engineering professor analyzing blood droplets and patterns to determine the velocity of an impact, which could tell investigators if the weapon used was a gun ... a hammer .. or something else entirely. The Virtual Autopsy Table
Have a look at the inside of a human being. In this installation, with the help of an easy to use multi touch interface, the user can freely interact with stunning volumetric 3D datasets of real scanned human bodies.
The datasets in this demo have been created with state of the art techniques within medical imaging; Dual Energy Computed Tomography. The data has been imported straight from the scanners and has not been edited or modified before rendering, what you see is not a 3D model, it’s a full volumetric description of a human body.
The visualization techniques used in this table is already utilized successfully as a compliment to the conventional autopsy. Apart from avoiding cutting in the body the medical experts, such as coroners, can see things that are difficult to discover in a conventional autopsy. Furthermore, the technique opens up for new opportunities in countries where autopsies are not accepted due to cultural reasons. The technique will revolutionize the traditional health care in many areas.
The technique can also, for educational purposes, be used in education environments and in public institutions such as museums, Science and Technology centers.
The Virtual Autopsy Table is developed by Norrköping Visualization Centre in collaboration with CMIV (www.cmiv.liu.se).
The installation is based on research results from CMIV, VITA at Linköping University, Sweden and Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine.

Virtual Autopsies
The virtual autopsy is one of the greatest advances in forensic medicine in the past hundred years. With the aid of three-dimensional X-ray techniques, virtual and bloodless autopsies are now being performed on suspected victims of crime. CMIV (the Centre for Medical Image Science and Visualisation) at Linköping University Hospital, NVIS (Norrköpings Visualisation and Interaction Studio) and the National Board of Forensic Medicine in Linköping are world leaders in the field of virtual autopsies. This project is part of the Swedish Visualisation research programme. Behind the programme are the Knowledge Foundation, the Foundation for Strategic Research, Vinnova, Vårdalstiftelsen (the Foundation for Health Care Sciences and Allergy Research) and the Invest in Sweden Agency. A total of SEK 85 million is being invested over five years.

It Came From the Genetics Lab: DNA, the Monster That Ate Forensic Science
Presented by Walter F. Rowe, PhD., Professor, Department of Forensic Sciences The George Washington University A PDF of the slides in this presentation can be downloaded at www.ncas.org (right-click to save). In the 1980s all was serene in the field of forensic science. Fingerprinting and dental records were the accepted methods of personal identification. Forensic serologists could identify a number of genetic markers in dried blood and body fluids. The identification sciences (questioned documents, firearm and tool mark identification, shoe and tire track identification) were readily accepted by courts. Few scientists envisioned that it would be possible to isolate human DNA from dried stains that were months or years old. However, within less than a quarter of a century forensic DNA profiling had become the gold standard against which all other forensic disciplines are measured (and not always to their benefit). This talk will examine the current state of forensic DNA profiling and ongoing research in this area. It will also explore the profound impact of DNA profiling on the criminal justice system, crime scene processing, the criminal investigative process and other branches of forensic science. The talk will also address some myths about DNA profiling and the personal information that it supposedly discloses.
