Carl Orff - Gassenhauer
Classic piece taken from Orff Schulwerk Volume 1: Musica Poetica. Personally, I believe Gassenhauer to be one of the greatest life pieces ever created and I always feel like taking a really deep breath and running around the world when I listen to it. I hope you all feel similar when you listen to it and please feel free to comment on your feelings when you listen. Enjoy!

Carmina Burana , Carl Orff (Ponnelle)
This was the dramatic rendition of Carl Orff's most famous piece of music, how he wanted it to look but seldom performed as such nowadays. It was finally filmed by West German TV in 1975 with the close co-operation of Orff in honour of his 80th birthday. The various stories of young lust and gluttony are playfully and skillfully brought to life. This version of Orff's masterpiece of the sacred and profane was hard to find in Germany. Not so strange, it was banned there for decades, most likely because of its almost literal interpretation of the texts Orff put music to. I first saw this when I was 12-13 years old at the Goethe Institute in Bergen, Norway, with my father, sister and mother. Someone had managed to get hold of an 8mm film roll with it and had a secret screening. This was in the 1980s and, believe it or not, there were strong forces opposed to what they considered blasphemous content in films. The mixture of Christian and pagan imagery is completely consistent with the lyrics, which were found in a monastery, and are a mixture of sacred and profane songs, but were obviously too tough to swallow. Copies of the film were destroyed, but luckily, art prevailed.

CARL ORFF: PROMETHEUS
Carl Orff's Prometheus after Aeschylus. Performed in the original Ancient Greek in 9 Scenes. NB: (Obviously Carl Orff's interpretation of the Ancient Greek language was entirely his own creation since he had the liberty as an composer/artist to use free imagination.) Carl Orff - Music for 1936 Olympics
This is a strange record. Its music that Carl Orff wrote for the 1936 German Olympics. A youth orchestra is conducted by Gunild Keetman. Although famous for Carmina Burana, Orff mostly wrote music for children to play, often collaborating with Keetman. Certainly not the bombast you would except from the Nazi's Olympics.

Carl Orff - A Portrait (full length documentary)
Memories of Carl Orff on the 100th Anniversary of his birth. This is a truly objective and positive documentary since it focuses on the works and Art of Carl Orff. Includes some rare and amazing footage of Orff's Christmas play, Antigonae on stage with Astrid Varnay, Oedipus in the studio with Rafael Kubelik, Prometheus with Ferdinand Leitner, and Carmina Burana with Ricardo Muti. Carl Orff also performs an excerpt from his Astutuli. Conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch is also interviewed on his relationship with Carl Orff and his music. The only other Orff documentary is by Tony Palmer and called "O Fortuna - Carl Orff and Carmina Burana". It is very well put together and covers the life of the man and less of his creations...It has a negative leaning though since many of the interviewees shockingly put him down. Nevertheless, I hope your appreciation of Carl Orff's music is peaked by this and my other Carl Orff uploads! ENJOY!

Carl Orff's Antigonae (COMPLETE)
Ferdinand Leitner conducts the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Ultra-rare DG 20th Century Classics release. Recorded in Munich 1961 in the presence of the composer, using Friedrich Holderlin's German translation in Five Scenes. -First performed in Salzburg 1949. Orchestra includes: Double Basses, Woodwinds, Trumpets, Harps and 6 Pianos. DRAMATIS PERSONAE: ANTIGONE - Inge Borkh ISMENE - Claudia Hellmann CREON - Carlos Alexander HAEMON - Fritz Uhl TIRESIAS - Ernst Haeflinger GUARD - Gerhard Stolze MESSENGER - Kim Borg EURYDICE - Hetty Plumacher CHORUS LEADER - Keith Engen ELDERS OF THEBES It is recommended to have a translation when listening to this recording. Since there are 4 recordings of Orff's Antigonae available, my personal favorite is Wolfgang Sawallisch's live recording from 1958. It is not only vividly realistic on every level, but when compared to Leitner's it is almost a completely different piece of music! I decided to post Leitner's recording because Orff was in the studio during its making, it is the only studio recording with beautifully recorded sound...and of its extreme rarity! ENJOY!
