This was the dramatic rendition of Carl Orff's most famous piece of music, how he wanted it to look but seldom performed as such nowadays. It was finally filmed by West German TV in 1975 with the close co-operation of Orff in honour of his 80th birthday. The various stories of young lust and gluttony are playfully and skillfully brought to life. This version of Orff's masterpiece of the sacred and profane was hard to find in Germany. Not so strange, it was banned there for decades, most likely because of its almost literal interpretation of the texts Orff put music to. I first saw this when I was 12-13 years old at the Goethe Institute in Bergen, Norway, with my father, sister and mother. Someone had managed to get hold of an 8mm film roll with it and had a secret screening. This was in the 1980s and, believe it or not, there were strong forces opposed to what they considered blasphemous content in films. The mixture of Christian and pagan imagery is completely consistent with the lyrics, which were found in a monastery, and are a mixture of sacred and profane songs, but were obviously too tough to swallow. Copies of the film were destroyed, but luckily, art prevailed. Carl Orff also performs an excerpt from his Astutuli. Conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch is also interviewed on his relationship with Carl Orff and his music. The only other Orff documentary is by Tony Palmer and called "O Fortuna - Carl Orff and Carmina Burana". It is very well put together and covers the life of the man and less of his creations...It has a negative leaning though since many of the interviewees shockingly put him down. Nevertheless, I hope your appreciation of Carl Orff's music is peaked by this and my other Carl Orff uploads! ENJOY!

I decided to post Leitner's recording because Orff was in the studio during its making, it is the only studio recording with beautifully recorded sound...and of its extreme rarity! ENJOY!

Carl Orff (1895-1982) was a German composer and an influential music educator. He started studying the piano at age five and also took organ and cello lessons. However, he was more interested in composing original music than in studying to be a performer. Orff wrote and staged puppet shows for his family, composing music for piano, violin, zither, and carillon to accompany them. He had a short story published in a children's magazine in 1905 and started to write a book about nature. By the time he was a teenager, Orff was writing songs, although he had not studied harmony or composition; his mother helped him set down his first works in musical notation. Orff wrote his own texts and he learned the art of composing, without a teacher, by studying classical masterworks on his own. In 1912 having already published several songs and written an opera, Orff joined the Munich Academy of Music. Although he remained to graduate in 1914, he soon lost patience with the academic approach to music. Orff subscribed to the idea that music should please, and, in the broadest sense, be good for the health. Two things particularly interested him and influenced most of his own work: One was the role of music in education and physical recreation. The other was the part played by music in entertainment through the ages, back to the days of ancient Greek and Roman drama.
