The Battle of Missionary Ridge was fought November 25, 1863, as part of the Chattanooga Campaign of the American Civil War. Following the Union victory in the Battle of Lookout Mountain on November 24, Union forces under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant assaulted Missionary Ridge and defeated the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by Gen. Braxton Bragg.
In the morning, elements of the Union Army of the Tennessee commanded by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman attempted to capture the northern end of Missionary Ridge, Tunnel Hill, but were stopped by fierce resistance from the Confederate divisions of Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne, William H.T. Walker, and Carter L. Stevenson. In the afternoon, Grant was concerned that Bragg was reinforcing his right flank at Sherman's expense. He ordered the Army of the Cumberland, commanded by Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, to move forward and seize the Confederate line of rifle pits on the valley floor, and stop there to await further orders. The Union soldiers moved forward and quickly pushed the Confederates from the first line of rifle pits but were then subjected to a punishing fire from the Confederate lines up the ridge.
Missionary Ridge is a geographic feature in Chattanooga, Tennessee, site of the Battle of Missionary Ridge, a battle in the American Civil War, fought on November 25, 1863. Union forces under Maj. Gens. Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and George H. Thomas routed Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg and lifted the siege of the city.
Missionary Ridge runs basically north-south for several kilometers and varies in width from a few meters to over 200 meters, with very steep, nearly vertical sides that rise over 100 meters from the ground surrounding it. Missionary Ridge was so named for the early missionaries who made their way along paths climbing the ridge on their way to Brainerd Village to the settlement of the Cherokee. It was also referred to as "Mission Ridge" in the early years.
The southernmost end of the Ridge extends into Georgia. The Ridge was slightly east of the city at the time of the battle but now, due to urban growth and annexation, it largely bisects the city. A 1/4 mile section of the Ridge was blasted away during construction of I-24. This is known locally as the "Ridge cut." The cut's sharp curves and steep grade are often a factor in accidents and congestion.

Part of the Chickamauga Battlefield park is Missionary Ridge, which overlooks Chattanooga. It was held by Confederate forces until Grant led Union offensive in November 1863. The area where Bragg's HQ is located is a small area of park. The area is also famous as Sheridan's Division captured the Confederate lines in this region, one regiment being led by Arthur MacArthur, who would receive a Medal of Honor for this action. His son, Douglas MacArthur would also receive the Medal of Honor for actions in WWII.

With the 1860 election of anti-slavery candidate Abraham Lincoln, the divisions between North and South reached their breaking point. Thirteen states from the South seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. Union military leaders, along with Lincoln himself, realized that ending the rebellion rested on controlling the Western Theater territory, the area between the Appalachians and the Mississippi River. CIVIL WAR: THE UNTOLD STORY examines this well-documented conflict through the lens of the Western Campaign, which dramatically shaped the final outcome of the Civil War. Narrated by Emmy-nominated actress Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey), the five-part series features poignant letters from both soldiers and civilians that provide new insights into the causes of the Civil War...
In order to lift the seige of Chattanooga, Lincoln took a number of immediate actions. He ordered 20,000 reinforcements from the Army of the Potomac to Chattanooga, and he appointed U.S. Grant as the overall commander of Union troops west of the Alleghenies. Grant took immediate action to improve the supply lines. Then, on November 24th, he launched his attack on Confederate lines. That day troops under, General Hooker, captured Lookout Mountain. The next day troops under General Thomas broke through the center of the Confederate lines and sent the Confederates in headlong retreat.

The Battle of Chickamauga, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War's western theater and the biggest battle ever fought in Georgia, took place September 18-20, 1863. With 34,000 casualties, it is generally accepted as the second bloodiest engagement of the war; only the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, with 51,000 casualties, was deadlier. The campaign that brought the Union and Confederate armies to Chickamauga began in late June 1863, when the Union Army of the Cumberland under Major General William S. Rosecrans advanced southeastward from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, against the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Braxton Bragg.

The most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his or her own instincts and ideas. It is the source of one of Emerson's most famous quotations, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." This essay is considered a watershed moment in which transcendentalism became a major cultural movement. An American classic. Emerson’s words are timeless. Persuasive and convincing, he challenges readers to define their own sense of accomplishment and asks them to measure themselves against their own standards, not those of society. This famous orator has utter faith in individualism and doesn’t invoke beyond what is humanly possible, he just believes deeply that each of us is capable of g...
The 19th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, or Nineteenth Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was an infantry regiment in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The 19th Tennessee was formed from companies of men from the counties of East Tennessee and was mustered into the Confederate army at Knoxville, Tennessee, in the spring of 1861. Beginning the war with a force of over 1,000 men, only 78 soldiers were present when the 19th surrendered. Fifty-eight of the remaining 78 soldiers were from the initial muster at the beginning of the war. The remaining 20 soldiers joined the regiment later. The regiment was encamped at Greensboro, North Carolina, when the Army of Tennessee surrendered on April 26, 1865. Active 1861--1865 Engagements *Cumberland Gap (Garri...

Any Muslim who has basic knowledge can spot this. I suppose its because they cant accept the fact that the videos of christians becoming muslims are actually genuine. I agree that some of the videos are difficult to refute due to the reason that they have been extra careful to not make errors. But a Muslim of very little knowledge can see that all the stories they produce are the same and fake - they play some arab music in the back, then the music of "light at the end of the tunnel" plays. www.fakeexmuslims.com

Following the conclusion of the Civil War, surviving Union and Confederate veterans returned home to face an unknown future. United by the shared experience of war, these former soldiers bonded through veterans organizations. In 1866, Union veterans established the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1889 former Confederates banded together to create the United Confederate Veterans. Both groups endeavored to "right the record" of the conflict. Park Historian John Heiser examines how these two groups, through their newspapers, regimental histories, and reunions helped to shape our interpretation of the war

On this day in 1863, Union General Ulysses S. Grant breaks the siege of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in stunning fashion by routing the Confederates under General Braxton Bragg at Missionary Ridge. For two months following the Battle of Chattanooga, the Confederates had kept the Union army bottled up inside a tight semicircle around Chattanooga. When Grant arrived in October, however, he immediately reversed the defensive posture of his army. After opening a supply line by driving the Confederates away from the Tennessee River in late October, Grant prepared for a major offensive in late November. It was launched on November 23 whenhe sent General George Thomas to probe the center of the Confederate line. This simple plan turned into a complete victory, and the Rebels retreated higher up Missi...

http://www.revelationtv.com Rees Howells was a miner in Wales in the late 1800’s who went on to discover the reality of Christ in his own life. In 1910, he married. He and his wife felt the call of God to serve as missionaries in Africa. Having been deeply touched by the Welsh revival, he saw the revival follow him to Africa and the power of God fall wherever he preached. His real work began when he returned to his beloved Wales and established the Bible College of Wales in 1924. The college came into its own as the second world war started and Rees Howells gathered intercessors to pray with him against the spiritual forces at work in the world at that time. Rees Howells understood the the words of Paul in Ephesians 6, where he wrote: ‘We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against p...

My last year of Rail Camp at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, was the best. In part one we see generic footage like last time. Part two will be a little more exciting. Also if you look carefully at SD70ACU 7273's fuel tank, you'll notice someone wrote "TRUMP," and you'll hear me talking to another camper (who I will not release his name) about the "TRUMP" fuel tank, and that I am not a fan of Trump (which is true). That being said, I do not want any comments about my political views or any political discussion of any kind. Any comment politically related will be dealt with accordingly.
