Cosmicism is the literary philosophy developed and used by the American writer H. P. Lovecraft in his weird fiction. Lovecraft was a writer of philosophically intense horror stories that involve occult phenomena like astral possession and alien miscegenation, and the themes of his fiction over time contributed to the development of this philosophy.
The philosophy of cosmicism states that there is no recognizable divine presence, such as a god, in the universe, and that humans are particularly insignificant in the larger scheme of intergalactic existence, and perhaps are just a small species projecting their own mental idolatries onto the vast cosmos. This also suggests that the majority of undiscerning humanity are creatures with the relative significance of insects and plants, when compared to the universe.
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (/ˈlʌvkræft, -ˌkrɑːft/; August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. Among his most celebrated tales are "The Call of Cthulhu", canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos. Never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor, Lovecraft saw commercial success increasingly elude him in this latter period, partly because he lacked the confidence and drive to promote himself. He subsisted in progressively straitened circumstances in his last years; an inheritance was completely spent by the time he died at the age of 46.
Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890, in his family home at 194 (later 456) Angell Street in Providence, Rhode Island (the house was demolished in 1961). He was the only child of Winfield Scott Lovecraft (1853–1898), a traveling salesman of jewelry and precious metals, and Sarah Susan Phillips Lovecraft (1857–1921), who could trace her ancestry to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631. Both of his parents were of entirely English ancestry, all of which had been in New England since the colonial period. In 1893, when Lovecraft was three, his father became acutely psychotic and was placed in the Providence psychiatric institution, Butler Hospital, where he remained until his death in 1898. H. P. Lovecraft maintained throughout his life that his father had died in a condition of paralysis brought on by "nervous exhaustion." Although it has been suggested his father's mental illness may have been caused by syphilis, neither the younger Lovecraft nor his mother (who also died in Butler Hospital) seems to have shown signs of being infected with the disease.
A surname or family name is a name added to a given name. In many cases, a surname is a family name and many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name". In the western hemisphere, it is commonly synonymous with last name because it is usually placed at the end of a person's given name.
In most Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries, two or more last names (or surnames) may be used. In China, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, Taiwan, Vietnam, and parts of India, the family name is placed before a person's given name.
The style of having both a family name (surname) and a given name (forename) is far from universal. In many countries, it is common for ordinary people to have only one name or mononym.
The concept of a "surname" is a relatively recent historical development, evolving from a medieval naming practice called a "byname". Based on an individual's occupation or area of residence, a byname would be used in situations where more than one person had the same name.
Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy-to-understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licenses do not replace copyright, but are based upon it. They replace individual negotiations for specific rights between copyright owner (licensor) and licensee, which are necessary under an "all rights reserved" copyright management, with a "some rights reserved" management employing standardized licenses for re-use cases where no commercial compensation is sought by the copyright owner. The result is an agile, low-overhead and low-cost copyright-management regime, profiting both copyright owners and licensees. Wikipedia uses one of these licenses.
A short video explaining the basic ideas in cosmicism. While Lovecraft was a writer first and foremost (and not a philosopher) it was inevitable that such a fierce intelligence would form a philosophy about the world in which he lived. This is it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmicism

There are many sub-genres of horror in literature, film, gaming, etc. In my (subjective) opinion Lovecraftian horror is the most effective and scariest sub-genre of horror regardless of what medium you're talking about. In this video I compare Lovecraftian horror with other types and try to show why it's the best. If you like this sort of video then subscribe. If you have Instagram look me up there @ArkhamReporter.

Excerpts from Howard Phillips Lovecraft's Selected Letters (1911-1937). "It is because I am a complete sceptic & cynic, recognising no such qualities as good or evil, beauty or ugliness, in the ultimate structure of the universe, that I insist on the artificial & traditional values of each particular cultural stream — proximate values which grew out of the special instincts, associations, environment, & experiences of the race in question, & which are the sole available criteria for the members of that race & culture, though of course having no validity outside it. These backgrounds of tradition against which to scale the objects & events of experience are all that lend such objects & events the illusion of meaning, value, or dramatic interest in an ultimately purposeless cosmos — hence I...

The Man Who Found Out (Cosmic Horror in the Vein of H. P. Lovecraft) Audiobook by Algernon Blackwood
These are three of the biggest themes in Lovecraft's life and work. What were Lovecraft's views on these subjects and how did he incorporate them into his work? Can we understand Lovecraft through these concepts? (S.T. Joshi, Jason Brock, Bob Price, Cody Goodfellow, Marc Ricciardi- mod.)

Happy Halloween! Dan here. This is something I've been working on for awhile and I think that, despite it being very rough around the edges, is one of my best works to date and is part of what I hope to be a new addition to how I talk about movies and TV shows as well as taking the channel into some slightly new directions. This has been in the making for awhile and with my day job, this, traveling around the state and doing things I've been kind of neglecting the channel but I can honestly say that things should get back to SOME semblance of normality now that I have this out of the way. I'm not sure exactly when but I'm going to have a stream to go into detail some of the things I want to do with the channel and do a Q&A; since I passed 1K subs and it feels like the right thing to do. ...

An introduction to cosmic horror in theory as well as examples
Apparently the deep ones are an unfairly persecuted minority group in need of social justice!!! In this article discussion we see how some author with an embarrassingly poor understanding of Lovecraftian horror attempts to use leftist identity politics of the Trump Era to mock and belittle Lovecraft... but then also use his creations for her own profit. Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) known as H. P. Lovecraft, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction, especially the subgenre known as weird fiction. Lovecraft's guiding aesthetic and philosophical principle was what he termed "cosmicism" or "cosmic horror", the idea that life is incomprehensible to human minds and that the universe is fundamentally inimical to the interests of humankind. As such, his stories express a profound indifference to human beliefs and affairs. Lovecraft is best known for his Cthulhu Mythos story cycle and the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his lifetime, his reputation has grown over the decades, and he is now regarded as one...
Matt's most recent book, Lovecraft Country is available here - http://tiny.cc/LovecraftCountry Back with a brand new book, critically-acclaimed cult novelist Matt Ruff blends historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror fantasy in an utterly original take on Jim Crow America in the 1950s. On the surface, Lovecraft Country tells the story of 22-year-old African American Army veteran and science-fiction buff Atticus Turner and his road trip—along with his uncle and childhood friend—to find his missing father. What makes it so much more is the mix of supernatural horrors and mundane terrors of white America they encounter along the way—and the secret, ritualistic society waiting for them at the end. Joining us for a discussion and signing of Lovecraft Country, Ruff will share his d...
[Unabridged Complete Version] The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Horror Audiobook, by H. P. Lovecraft
A few of my own thoughts on H.P. Lovecraft and on his influence on modern horror. I also speak a little bit about my opinions on Lovecraft's philosophy and racism towards the end. I had some trouble with audio levels during the editing process for this one, so sometimes the background music comes in a little too loud, but hopefully everything's balanced enough. Also, because I'm not really used to speaking in great length for this long amount of time on a single subject, much of this audio is several different takes working off a script which were brought together in post, hence the breaks you may hear. The gameplay footage is from Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for the Nintendo Gamecube. Musical tracks used in this video (in order of play): 1. "The Chosen" (Eternal Darkness: Sanit...
