Brooklyn Monk in Asia: Cham Muslims in Cambodia (Part 1)
Antonio Graceffo has been writing about the Cham ethnic minority in Southeast Asia for years. Once the Kingdom of Champa ruled the Mekong Delta area, from Vietnam to Cambodia, and sacked the Khmer capitol. Eventually, Cambodian King Jayavarman VII defeated the Cham, whose kingdom soon went into decline. The Cham people were scattered throughout Southeast Asia. Today, many still live in Cham communities, speaking their Cham language, practicing their culture and the Islamic religion. Antonio has personally explored Cham communities in Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as a small Cham enclave in the Philippines. Brooklyn Monk in Asia: Cham Muslims, Tonle Sap (Part 1)
The Kingdom of Champa once ruled much of Cambodia and Vietnam. Antonio Graceffo visits a Cham village directly across the Tonle Sap River, from downtown Phnom Penh, to learn about the religion, language, and culture, of the descendents of the Champa Kingdom. In modern Cambodia, the Cham, who follow the religion of Islam, are the largest growing ethnic minority. The population is estimated between 500000 to 1000000 people. The Cham have the highest birthrates of any ethnicity in Cambodia, with an average of 5 children per family. Many Cham villages are poor, but this particular community seemed to be doing well. Brooklyn Monk in Asia: Cham Muslims, Language Teacher (Part 4)
Cham Teacher Sokry tells Antonio Graceffo about his own financial difficulty in continuing to work as a teacher and to support his family. His salary is equal to 50 cents US per month, per student, which is barely enough to feed himself, his wife, and his daughter. His dream, of course, is to travel to Mecca and Medina and to become a Hadji, but he lacks the financial resources. Get lost in Asia! (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand)
"Get lost in Asia" is my attempt to tell a story about adventures, new experiences and some magical moments I lived up to while traveling in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.
Well... it is not as easy as I thought to squeeze 8 weeks of intense backpacking into this very short video, but I tried to do my best. It has been a very dynamic journey and so is the video... (be warned... )
I hope the movie would bring back some personal memories for those who already have been to Southeast Asia or it would become an inspiration for others considering Asia as their next travel destination.
Enjoy, share it and feel free to comment.
