HERSHEY -- They led the only Maryland football team ever to beat Penn State in football.
"We sort of expected to win," said Gary Collins, the former All-American receiver. "We had a good team."
Collins and quarterback Dick Shiner once made a great team. Their fascinating relationship dates back to the 1960s.
"Actually until that game, I hardly ever played with (Collins)," recalled Shiner.
"He hardly played," added Collin.
That game? A Maryland victory over Penn State in 1961. At the time, an important win, said Collins. "Of course (it was), the whole roster was from Pennsylania."
Such a win now seems almost impossible.
Maryland, now a member of the Big Ten, is 1-35-1 all-time against Penn State, dating back to 1917. The two teams will meet for the first time since 1993 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
"I was reading the stats on the (1961) Penn State game," Collins said. "Of course, the article said I was a decoy."
If there's video of that 1961 victory, CBS 21 News couldn't find it. We located just a few old photos from the University of Maryland archives.
Two of them feature a much younger Gary Collins on the field afterward.
In other words, on the worldwide web, the game barely exists.
But bring the two men together and the game comes to life.
"I really hurt after (that) Penn State game," recalled Collins, a member of the National Football League's 1960s All-Decade team. "They hit harder (than the ACC opponents), they really did."
Shiner, starting for the first-time, threw three TDs, including one to Collins, who was one very sick All-American. "I'd come out and (vomit), then I go back in and (vomit)."
"Do you know how we won the game?" added Collins. "I took a safety. We won 21-17."
The Associated Press later said 'Maryland Repulses Penn State.' That never, ever happened again.
Still the most fascinating thing about Collins' and Shiner's relationship? For 53 years, they've been connected by one game. Now they're separated by just five and a half miles.
Both live in-and-around Hershey area (Collins in Hershey, Shiner in Palmyra). They don't see each other as often as they'd like, so CBS 21 News recently took them to lunch at Dukes Bar Grille.
They were also later teammates in the National Football League with the Cleveland Browns.
Now the big question, could this finally be Maryland's year?
"I think they have a good chance," said Shiner.
Collins agrees. "Yes, they have a good chance."
Maybe a better chance than you think.
Not on the menu at this year's game? A pregame speech from either Shiner or Collins.
"The last time, I game 'em a talk before a game, they lost 70-7!" joked Shiner.

Richard Earl "Dick" Shiner (born July 18, 1942 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania) is a former professional American football quarterback who played in eleven National Football League seasons from 1964-1974 for six different teams. He played college football at the University of Maryland. In his first collegiate start, Shiner led Maryland to the school's lone victory against Penn State in the 37-game series.
Shiner was drafted in the seventh round of the 1964 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. Shiner was also selected in the 20th round of the 1964 AFL Draft by the New York Jets.
On September 16, 1973, while playing for the Atlanta Falcons in a game against the New Orleans Saints, Shiner became the first person to post a perfect passer rating, during what was the first season in which the statistic was officially kept. However, multiple other quarterbacks are recognized retroactively to have accomplished this feat prior to the 1973 season. Shiner completed 13 of 15 pass attempts for 227 yards and 3 touchdowns, with no interceptions.

Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. (born September 27, 1982), better known by his stage name Lil Wayne, is an American rapper. At the age of nine, Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label, and half of the duo, The B.G.'z, with B.G.. Maryland, now a member of the Big Ten, is 1-35-1 all-time against Penn State, dating back to 1917. The two teams will meet for the first time since 1993 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
"I was reading the stats on the (1961) Penn State game," Collins said. "Of course, the article said I was a decoy."
If there's video of that 1961 victory, CBS 21 News couldn't find it. We located just a few old photos from the University of Maryland archives.
Two of them feature a much younger Gary Collins on the field afterward.
In other words, on the worldwide web, the game barely exists.
But bring the two men together and the game comes to life.

HERSHEY -- They led the only Maryland football team ever to beat Penn State in football.
"We sort of expected to win," said Gary Collins, the former All-American receiver. "We had a good team."
Collins and quarterback Dick Shiner once made a great team. Their fascinating relationship dates back to the 1960s.
"Actually until that game, I hardly ever played with (Collins)," recalled Shiner.
"He hardly played," added Collin.
That game? A Maryland victory over Penn State in 1961. At the time, an important win, said Collins. "Of course (it was), the whole roster was from Pennsylania."
Such a win now seems almost impossible.
