Richard Pound (2010)

Richard William Duncan Pound, OC OQ (born March 22, 1942) is a Canadian lawyer, partner of the law firm Stikeman Elliott, the former president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) based in Montreal, and former chancellor of McGill University. He is a former vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and was a one-time candidate for the presidency of that organization.

Career[link]

Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, Pound was a swimming competitor at the 1960 Summer Olympics. He finished sixth in the 100 metre freestyle and was also on Canada’s fourth place relay team. He would later win a number of medals at the 1962 Commonwealth Games. Retiring from swimming, he accepted a role with the Canadian Olympic Committee and eventually became its president.

In 1978, he was elected to the International Olympic Committee and put in charge of negotiating television and sponsorship deals. Pound revolutionized the Olympic movement using such deals to transform the IOC into a multi-billion dollar enterprise. He became known as an outspoken critic of corruption within the IOC, while at the same time supporting the leadership of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. His criticisms were given a wide airing after the scandals surrounding the Salt Lake City Olympics broke, and he was then appointed head of the inquiry into the corruption. He also campaigned vehemently for stronger drug testing.

Pound has also served as Chancellor of McGill University since July 1, 1999, and is a partner in the law firm of Stikeman Elliott LLP in Montreal. He practises tax law. He is also the author of several books on legal history. He edits Pound’s Tax Case Notes, a review of tax-law court cases for lawyers. He did much of the reading of cases and the writing of the notes on international airplane flights to and from International Olympic Committee functions.

With the retirement of Samaranch in 2001, he ran for president of the IOC, but the IOC chose Belgian Jacques Rogge. Pound finished third behind South Korean Kim Un-Yong, who was one of those found to have participated in the Salt Lake City scandals, and who was later prosecuted by the South Korean government.

Pound scaled back his involvement with the IOC and became head of WADA. In that role he oversaw an unprecedented toughening of the drug-testing regimen. Pound was an especially harsh critic of the Americans, arguing that there is widespread doping, especially amongst their track and field team. He also worked to expand WADA beyond the Olympics, calling on the major sports leagues to agree to WADA scrutiny. His allegations of widespread doping in professional bicycle racing at times brought WADA into fierce public conflict with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Pound's term as WADA president ended at the end of 2007; he chose not to run for another term.

In 1992, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and in 1993 was made an Officer of the National Order of Quebec.

Pound was awarded the Gold and Silver Star of the Order of the Sacred Treasure by the government of Japan in 1998.^[1]

Controversies[link]

NHL[link]

Discussing the National Hockey League in November 2005, Pound said, “you wouldn’t be far wrong if you said a third of hockey players are gaining some pharmaceutical assistance."^[3] Pound would later admit that he completely invented the figure.^[4] Both the NHL and NHLPA have denied the claims, demanding Pound provide evidence rather than make what they term unsubstantiated claims. Since his comments were made, some NHL players have tested positive for banned substances, including Bryan Berard, José Théodore, and two of 250 players involved in Olympic testing. As of June 2006, there had been 1,406 tests in the program jointly administered by the league and the union, and none has come up with banned substances under NHL rules. Pound remained skeptical, claiming the NHL rules were too lax and unclear, as they do not test for some banned substance, including certain stimulants.^[5] In an interview with hockey blogger, B. D. Gallof, of Hockeybuzz on December 19, 2007, Pound was asked to expand on the 30% comment and subsequent reaction, expounded that stimulants was "the NHL's drug of choice". He also cited that the NHL will have no credibility on a drug policy if it, and other sports, continue to run things "in-house".^[6]

Lance Armstrong[link]

In January 2004, Le Monde quoted Pound as saying that "the public knows that the riders in the Tour de France and the others are doping." This prompted a strongly worded rebuke from Lance Armstrong, who called Pound's comments "careless and unacceptable."^[7] Pound said he was surprised by the personal nature of Armstrong's response because he had never mentioned the cyclist by name.

Around the same time, scientists at a French lab were using frozen urine samples from the 1999 Tour de France to find a new way of detecting erythropoietin (EPO), an oxygen-boosting agent. The samples did not have names attached to them, only numbers, and were provided for research purposes only. But an article in the August 23, 2005 edition of L'Équipe reported finding documentation linking the numbers with the riders, with the findings from the research with samples linked to Armstrong, claiming that six of his 15 samples showed traces of EPO. Pound told the media that there was "now an onus on Lance Armstrong and the others to explain how it is EPO got into their systems."^[8]

The Union Cycliste Internationale launched an enquiry, led by lawyer Emile Vrijman, former head of the Netherlands’ antidoping agency (and later defense lawyer of athletes accused of doping). In his 132-page report,^[9] leaked to the media on May 31, 2006, Vrijman said no proper records were kept of the samples and that there had been no chain of custody and no process to ensure that the samples had not been spiked with banned substances at the laboratory. The report was highly critical of WADA and Pound, concluding that they had specifically targeted Armstrong and the UCI. The report also called for an investigation to "focus on the communications between Dick Pound and the media" and recommended that no disciplinary action be taken against any athletes.

In response, Pound dismissed the Vrijman report as “so lacking in professionalism and objectivity that it borders on farcical.”^[10] WADA released an official statement, criticising the Vrijman report as biased, ill-informed, speculative, and "fallacious in many aspects."^[11]

On June 9, 2006, Armstrong sent an eight-page letter to Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, demanding that action be taken against Pound. He wrote that Pound was guilty of “reprehensible and indefensible” behaviour and "must be suspended or expelled from the Olympic movement." In February 2007, the IOC ethics committee recommended that Pound exercise greater prudence in his public pronouncements. It declined to move toward removing Pound as an IOC member, and found it had no jurisdiction over WADA. In response, Pound said he was accountable to WADA, not to the IOC.^[12]

Walter Mayer[link]

Based on information supplied by WADA, Italian police raided the rooms of Austria’s cross-country and Nordic skiing team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Pound told reporters that blood-doping gear had been confiscated from the home of Austrian coach, Walter Mayer, a month earlier. Mayer brought defamation charges against Pound—and against IOC president Jacques Rogge—claiming that he had been slandered by their comments. Mayer withdrew his lawsuits in February 2007.

Floyd Landis[link]

In January 2007, Pound responded to Floyd Landis' testosterone test following stage 17 of the Tour of France, an event (and a stage) which Landis initially won, but of which he was stripped after failing a dope case and losing at arbitration. Pound declared "I mean, it was 11 to 1!" referring to the testosterone-to-epitestosterone level. "You’d think he’d be violating every virgin within 100 miles. How does he even get on his bicycle?"^[4]

In July 2007 former champion Gary Player went public with his views about drug taking in golf, a view endorsed by Pound.^[13]

"Player has no particular axe to grind, other than to try and maintain the integrity of his sport. It is a wake-up call and the PGA need to act now while they still have the initiative, rather than being forced into it as a result of a scandal."

On August 9, 2008, during a conversation in French, when asked about whether the IOC was embarrassed to be affiliated with China's recent political history, he was quoted as replying: "We must not forget that 400 years ago, Canada was a land of savages, with scarcely 10,000 inhabitants of European origin, while in China, we're talking about a 5,000-year-old civilization."^[14]

Two months later, the Aboriginal advocacy group LandInSights asked for him to be suspended from the International Olympic Committee for the remark. Pound responded that it was a clumsy remark that was taken out of context and that in the particular French expression used, "un pays de sauvages", the French sauvages was not equivalent to English "savages".^[15]

Richard Peter Gaughan usually known as Dick Gaughan (born 17 May 1948, Glasgow) is a Scottish musician, singer, and songwriter, particularly of folk and social protest songs.

Early years[link]

Gaughan was born in Glasgow's Rottenrow Maternity Hospital, when his father was working in Glasgow as an engine driver. He spent the first year-and-a-half of his life in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, after which the whole family moved to Leith, a port on the outskirts of Edinburgh. He has never returned to Rutherglen, and is proud to be a Leither. His mother was a Macdonald from Lochaber, and was a native speaker of Gaelic. As a child in the 1930s she won a silver medal at the Gaelic Mod. His father was born in Leith, and his paternal grandfather was an Irish speaker from Mayo, who played the fiddle. The three children, of whom Dick was the eldest, grew up surrounded by the music of both Scotland and Ireland. The family experienced considerable poverty, which had a very strong influence on Gaughan's chosen path in life and his political views.^[1]

Gaughan took up the guitar at the age of seven. Although he later sang in Scottish Gaelic, he is not fluent in that language; he does, however, have a powerful command of Scots. Gaughan sang in Edinburgh folk clubs and became a professional musician in 1970, playing mainly traditional songs on an acoustic guitar. He now writes his own songs as well as performing those of others. Although his approach to performing focuses on the words to the songs, Gaughan is also known as a master of the acoustic guitar. An example of his purely instrumental work is Coppers and Brass (1977).

1970s[link]

He made one solo album, No More Forever, before joining The Boys of the Lough, singing and playing guitar on their debut album in 1972. After leaving, he was a guest of the High Level Ranters when they recorded The Bonnie Pit Laddie in 1975, performing on two tracks. From 1976 to 1978 there then followed a hectic period of his life pursuing two careers, one as a member of Five Hand Reel and one as a soloist. It was a time of hard drinking, travelling continental Europe in vans, and seeing very little of his wife and daughter. The crisis came when his daughter was struck by a car while he was away. The daughter survived, but Gaughan had to take stock of his life and re-prioritise things.

He taught himself to read and write music, and in the late 1970s he began to write reviews for what was at the time the only national folk music paper, Folk Review. He also saw more of his family. He joined the agitprop theatre group 7:84. In this, he appeared to be following in the footsteps of another socialist theatre-director-singer Ewan MacColl, even recording a tribute album to him in 1978. (Gaughan has also taken part in a tribute to Woody Guthrie).

1980s[link]

At the beginning of 1982, Gaughan proposed and oversaw the organisation of a conference, held at Cecil Sharp House, which set up an organisation in the UK called "Performance of Folk and Other Related Music", which was intended to be an umbrella body of people involved in "Folk and Other Related Music" in any capacity - performers, promoters, record companies, journalists, broadcasters, etc. - to facilitate greater communication and cooperation. One of the achievements in its short life was the coordinating of fundraising events to support Nic Jones and his family after his serious road accident. Gaughan served two years as chair with Susie Stockton as secretary and Matt Armour as vice-chair. Following Gaughan's stepping down as chair due to his voice problems at the beginning of 1984, he was succeeded by Matt Armour.

Gaughan's solo albums of the 1980s returned to the acoustic style in which he had begun, containing both traditional ballads ("The Muckle Sangs") as well as his own songs, and using acoustic guitar (although he can play electric guitar and in fact most fretted instruments). His decision to concentrate on songs that convey political messages, rather than those more attractive to the mainstream, is clear in the important albums Handful of Earth (1981) and A Different Kind of Love Song (1983). Handful of Earth was Melody Maker's album of the year in 1981, and in 1989 was also voted album of the decade by Folk Roots (now fRoots) magazine in both readers' and critics' polls.

1990s[link]

In 1991, Gaughan invited seven other well-established Scots musicians to take part in a band project called Clan Alba.^[2] The original lineup was Gaughan, Mary MacMaster (Sprangeen, The Poozies, Sileas), Brian McNeill (Battlefield Band), Patsy Seddon (Sprangeen, The Poozies, Sileas), Davy Steel (Drinker's Drouth, Ceolbeg), Mike Travis (Wildcat, Cauld Blast Orchestra), Dave Tulloch (Spencer's Feat, Five Hand Reel) and Gary West (Ceolbeg). The first performance of Clan Alba was at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh as part of the 1992 Edinburgh Folk Festival, and over the next two years, Clan Alba performed at numerous festivals across the UK and Europe including Glastonbury, Cambridge, WDR Festival in Bonn, Brugge, Tønder and Stainsby. In 1993, Gary West departed and was replaced by Fred Morrison. In 1994 Clan Alba recorded an eponymous double CD at Redesdale Studios with Gaughan producer before disbanding in 1995. Since then, Gaughan has continued to pursue his solo career. In 1983 Gaughan was the subject of a BBC Spectrum documentary entitled Gaughan, and in 2005 a further television documentary entitled A Different Kind of Love Song formed part of the BBC Four Sessions series.

Style and interests[link]

Gaughan has many and various influences. In his guitar playing one can detect the influence of Doc Watson, Davy Graham and Bert Jansch, but he also claims to have been influenced by musicians as diverse as Hank Williams and Seán Ó Riada. His songs have been recorded by Billy Bragg, Mary Black, Jessica Haines & Mark Kaiser and Capercaillie amongst many others. He has also recorded extensively as a session musician.

Gaughan's interest in composition and orchestration has led to two orchestral commissions from the prestigious Celtic Connections festival: Timewaves (Lovesong to a People's Music) in 2004 and, in 2007, his first symphonic work, Treaty 300; a musical examination of the effects of the Treaty of Union of 1707 on Scottish culture) composed for the inaugural concert of the Celtic Connections Youth Orchestra.

One of Gaughan's strong interests is the Internet, and he has a particular love for Usenet in which he has been an active participant for many years. While recovering from voice problems in 1984 he took a course on computing. He designs and maintains his own extensive website and is strongly in favour of web accessibility.

In 2002 Gaughan released Prentice Piece, a self-selected thirty-year retrospective of his career (although some material could not be included owing to copyright disputes), and a studio album, Lucky for Some, was released in April 2006. A live CD (the first since 1985) entitled Gaughan Live! at the Trades Club, recorded at the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, was released on 1 April 2008.

Percy Robert Miller (born April 29, 1967), better known by his stage name Master P or his business name P. Miller, is an American rapper, actor, entrepreneur, investor, and producer. He is the founder of the popular label No Limit Records, which went bankrupt and was relaunched as New No Limit Records through Koch Records. followed by Guttar Music Entertainment, Take A Stand Records and No Limit Forever Records. He is the founder and CEO of P. Miller Enterprises, an entertainment and financial conglomerate and Better Black Television.

Miller gained fame in the late 1990s with the success of his group TRU and his fifth album Ice Cream Man, which contained his first single "Mr. Ice Cream Man". In 1997, after the success of one his biggest singles to date, "Make 'Em Say Uhh!," went platinum, Miller grew further in popularity. Then Miller released his second platinum album Ghetto D. Miller also starred in his own street film, mostly based on his life, I'm Bout It.

In 1998, P. Miller released his most successful album to date MP Da Last Don. The album was also based on a film that Miller produced, which came out earlier that year with the same name. The album hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 charts, selling over 400,000 copies in its first week. The album was certified 4x platinum, with over four million copies sold, making it Miller's best-selling album. In 1999, Miller released his eighth album, Only God Can Judge Me. It was not as successful as his previous album, though it still managed to reach a gold certification. Miller also starred in the movie, I Got the Hook Up, with A.J. Johnson.

In the 2000s, as No Limit Records' popularity was declining, Miller's was as well. P. Miller re-launched No Limit Records as New No Limit Records. On November 28, 2000, he released his ninth studio album, Ghetto Postage; with relatively little success compared to earlier releases, selling 500,000 copies; critics ravaged the album. In 2003, Miller starred in the film Lockdown. In 2004, Miller released his eleventh album, Good Side, Bad Side it charted number 1 on the Independent Billboards and sold 300,000 copies. The same year Miller released his first independent album Living Legend: Certified D-Boy on his new label Guttar Music, and the album only sold 75,000 copies.

In 2011, Miller and Gucci Mane are producing and starring in a new soundtrack entitled Get Money which will be produced by Drumma Boy.

On February 7, 1995 Miller released his fourth studio album 99 Ways to Die. Also In 1995 Master P & TRU released their third collaboration album True it was the group's first major released after two independent albums and it managed to make it to #25 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #14 on the Top Heatseekers. The album was known for its first single and P. Miller's best known song "I'm Bout' It, Bout It".

Master P & 504 Boyz released their last album for the victims of New Orleans of Hurricane Katrina the album was entitled Hurricane Katrina: We Gon Bounce Back. In 2007, Miller released a collaboration album with his son Romeo Miller titled Hip Hop History it sold 32,000 copies worldwide.

On December 6, 2010, it was announced that P. Miller was going on a new tour with his brother Silkk The Shocker & his son Romeo entitled No Limit Forever International.^[1] On February 8, 2011, P. Miller was featured on his managed artist Gucci Mane track entitled "Brinks" it is his first recorded song in over 4 years.^{[2][dead link]} There are also rumors that P. Miller is recording a new album & it is the sequel to his Platinum album Ghetto D. He is also working on the soundtrack to Get Money, his new movie with Gucci Mane which will be produced by Drumma Boy.

Miller's filmography includes Uncle P (New Line), Uncle Willy's Family, Soccer Mom, Repos, Lockdown, Black Supaman, Down and Distance, Toxic, Foolish, and The Pig People (currently in production.)^[3] Miller recently teamed up with his son Romeo to develop a children's cartoon, titled Gee Gee The Giraffe. The show is true to the duo's mission to produce positive, educational and entertaining content for African-American children. Animation has been employed by the Millers on prior occasions such as their February 2008 cartoon version of their music video for the song "Black History."^{[4][unreliable source?]}

Miller has also made history as the first hip-hop entrepreneur to own a cable television network, Better Black Television, (BBTV) whose aim is to promote positive messages and content to the African American culture. The network was launched in 2009. Executives include Denzel Washington, Derek Anderson of the Charlotte Bobcats, DJ Kool Herc and Bo Derek. P. Miller is starring in a new film with his protege Gucci Mane entitled Get Money which is based on his book of the same name.^{[5][dead link]}

He also starred on Romeo! featuring his son Lil Romeo on the kids network Nickelodeon.

As founder and CEO of No Limit Entertainment, Miller at one time presided over a business empire that included No Limit Records, Bout It Inc., No Limit Clothing, No Limit Communications, No Limit Films, No Limit Sports Management, P. M. Properties and Advantage Travel. Miller ranked 10th on Forbes magazine's 1998 list of America's 40 highest paid entertainers with an estimated income of $56.5 million.^[6] Miller represented running back Ricky Williams when he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints. Williams' rookie deal has been used in law schools and business schools as a model for bad contracts.^[6] Miller also manages the music, film and television career of his son, rap star Romeo Miller, pop star Forrest Lipton & rap star Gucci Mane.

Miller had a contract with two different NBA teams – with the Charlotte Hornets during the 1998/01 season and the Toronto Raptors in 1999 pre-season.^[7][8] Despite this, he was never actually on the regular season roster for an NBA team. He also played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for the Fort Wayne Fury. In 2004, he played for the ABA's Las Vegas Rattlers. He joined the 2008 McDonald's NBA All-Star Celebrity Game and scored 17 points in total.^[9]

Miller has dedicated his time to communities through P. Miller Youth Centers^{[10][not in citation given]} and his P. Miller Food Foundation for the Homeless.^[11] On July 28, 2007, Willie W. Herenton, the mayor of Memphis, Tennessee presented Miller with the key to the city.^{[12][dead link]}

Miller's financial status has been brought to light as the rapper and his ex-wife are engaged in a heated battle over child support. Though his net worth was once estimated at $600 million, he has been ordered to pay just $271 a month in child support for his four minor children.

He has a daughter named Cymphonique Miller and a son named Romeo Miller. He is also the brother of rappers Silkk the Shocker & C-Murder.

Mia Young (born January 9, 1970), better known by her stage name Mia X, was the first female emcee to sign with No Limit Records.^[1] In 1992, she released a single titled “Ask Them Niggas.” From 1995 to 1998, Mia X released three albums for No Limit: Good Girl Gone Bad, Unlady Like, and Mama Drama. The second was certified gold by the RIAA for sales exceeding 500,000 copies.

Although born in New Orleans, Mia began her rhyming career in Queens, New York, as part of New York Incorporated, which disbanded after only four years. She then returned to New Orleans and met with Master P, an aspiring emcee and producer who signed her to his record label, No Limit.

Mia X reappeared on the hip hop scene in late 1996 with a track called "Verbal Assault" that was produced by Donald XL Robertson on the Southern Smoke mixtape series. The song included a refrain with the words "Guess Who's Back?" which lead to some speculation that she might be working on a new album.

Mia X is currently at work as the executive producer on the release of her son Sean's (aka Fly Guy Sean) debut album The future is in my hands... Also she is working very closely with her nephew Skrill-Dilly and his release on Mike Dean's List production label set to be released in 2009 via an unsaid major distribution deal.^{[citation needed]}

In 2008, she appeared on C-Murder's album Screamin' 4 Vengeance, on tracks titled "Mihita" and "Posted on tha Block (Remix)."

Mia recently released an interview about her hiatus and comeback, revealing that she is working on a mixtape and a new album called Betty Rocka Locksmith due out in 2011.^[2] She has shot a video for a song from her upcoming mixtape called I Get The Paper^[3] and is releasing a song called "Hush" on December 8 through her own label Musiclife Recordings/XL Productionz^[4] (digitally on iTunes, Amazon MP3, etc.). Through Twitter Mia has stated she does not want to rap again and has been retired for 12 years, which means that the mixtape and album she worked on after her 'retirement' will not be released.
