Cormac McCarthy - The Road on Naxos AudioBooks
"Consistently brilliant in its imagining of the posthumous condition of nature and civilization." - The New York Times Book Review However bleak the subject of "The Road", Cormac McCarthys searing portrait of a post-apocalyptic world, it was immediately hailed by critics as a masterpiece and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2007 and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. In a land where no hope remains, a man and his son walk alone towards the coast. "The Road" is the moving story of their journey, but also an unflinching exploration of human behaviour from ultimate destructiveness to extreme tenderness. Cormac McCarthy has written ten novels, including "No Country for Old Men", "Blood Meridian" and the "Border Trilogy" series. He has previously won the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The movie of "The Road" starring Viggo Mortensen is now on US release, and many will want to read the original work before or after seeing it. "The Road" is read for Naxos AudioBooks by Audie/Earphone award winner Rupert Degas. www.naxosaudiobooks.com

Jonathan Franzen: 2011 Heartland Prize for Fiction
chicagohumanities.org - See more Chicago Humanities Festival events. Beginning with his 2001 novel, The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen has been celebrated as one of the most perceptive and talented chroniclers of contemporary American life. In Freedom, Franzen delves into the heart of one complicated Minnesota family. Walter and Patty Berglund's middle-aged growing pains—the messiness of love found and lost, roads taken and not—is, in the words of one critic, an "indelible portrait of our times" and earned him a nomination for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. The winner of the National Book Award and James Tait Black Memorial Prize in fiction for The Corrections, Franzen is also the author of The Discomfort Zone (memoir), How to Be Alone (essays), and the novels Strong Motion and The Twenty-Seventh City.

Christopher Hitchens (1989) on Rushdie
Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) on 19 June 1947. He went to school in Bombay and at Rugby in England, and read History at King's College, Cambridge, where he joined the Cambridge Footlights theatre company. After graduating, he lived with his family who had moved to Pakistan in 1964, and worked briefly in television before returning to England, beginning work as a copywriter for an advertising agency. His first novel, Grimus, was published in 1975. His second novel, the acclaimed Midnight's Children, was published in 1981. It won the Booker Prize for Fiction, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for fiction), an Arts Council Writers' Award and the English-Speaking Union Award, and in 1993 was judged to have been the 'Booker of Bookers', the best novel to have won the Booker Prize for Fiction in the award's 25-year history. The novel narrates key events in the history of India through the story of pickle-factory worker Saleem Sinai, one of 1001 children born as India won independence from Britain in 1947. The critic Malcolm Bradbury acclaimed the novel's achievement in The Modern British Novel (Penguin, 1994): 'a new start for the late-twentieth-century novel.' Rushdie's third novel, Shame (1983), which many critics saw as an allegory of the political situation in Pakistan, won the Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Fiction. The publication in 1988 of his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, lead to accusations of ...

John Berger "Ways of Seeing" all 4
John Peter Berger (born 5 November 1926) is an English art critic, novelist, painter, poet and author. His novel G. won the 1972 Booker Prize, and his essay on art criticism Ways of Seeing, written as an accompaniment to a BBC series, is often used as a university text. Berger began his career as a painter and exhibited work at a number of London galleries in the late 1940s.[2] His art has been exhibited at the Wildenstein, Redfern and Leicester galleries in London. Berger has continued to paint throughout his career.[3] While teaching drawing (from 1948 to 1955), Berger became an art critic, publishing many essays and reviews in the New Statesman. His Marxist humanism and his strongly stated opinions on modern art made him a controversial figure early in his career. He titled an early collection of essays Permanent Red, in part as a statement of political commitment, and later wrote that before the Soviet Union achieved nuclear parity with the United States he had felt constrained not to criticize the former's policies; afterwards his attitude toward the Soviet state became considerably more critical. After a childless first marriage, Berger has three children: Jacob, a film director; Katya, a writer and film critic; and Yves, an artist. In 1958 Berger published his first novel, A Painter of Our Time, which tells the story of the disappearance of Janos Lavin, a fictional exiled Hungarian painter, and his diary's discovery by an art critic friend called John. The book's ...

Three intertwining storylines see the Quartet's central themes of corruption and the perversion of justice come to a head. BJ, the rent boy from 1974; the lawyer Big John Piggott, who's as near as you get to a hero in Peace's world; and Maurice Jobson, the senior cop whose career of corruption and brutality has set all this in motion, find themselves on a collision course that can only end in a terrible vengeance. David Peace (born 1967) is an English author. He was named one of the Best of Young British Novelists by Granta in 2003 and won the 2004 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. He is also known for his novels GB84 and The Damned United, with the latter made into a feature film starring Michael Sheen.

Robert Graves - A Dead Boche
Robert von Ranke Graves (also known as Robert Ranke Graves and most commonly Robert Graves) (24 July 1895 -- 7 December 1985) was an English poet, scholar/translator/writer of antiquity specializing in Classical Greece and Rome, and novelist. During his long life he produced more than 140 works. Graves's poems—together with his translations and innovative analysis and interpretations of the Greek myths, his memoir of his early life, including his role in the First World War, Good-Bye to All That, and his speculative study of poetic inspiration, The White Goddess—have never been out of print. He earned his living from writing, particularly popular historical novels such as I, Claudius, King Jesus, The Golden Fleece, and Count Belisarius. He also was a prominent translator of Classical Latin and Ancient Greek texts; his versions of The Twelve Caesars and The Golden Ass remain popular today for their clarity and entertaining style. Graves was awarded the 1934 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for both I, Claudius and Claudius the God. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hair-whip heartbreak
Naomi is 16, and works with us at photography factory when she is off school pretty much as an equal member. Lets be honest age is irrelevant in a great picture, plus she has a sense of the social media space to rival the best new media agency analysts. All the newest trends are always playing out as only she predicts. Her detailed clear and analysis of youth culture on the internet is worth a million dollars to us and she is a key member of our team. More importantly her simple black and white photographic portraits are utterly brilliant, an evocation of sub suburban teenage life as seen though the eyes of a 15 (now 16) year old girl. But on the day of this slow motion test Naomi was not her normal beautiful smiling dry sarcastic self (think Juno with a camera). Recently she had a relationship with a Hollister lookalike boy end in an unfair way (what was ever fair about being 16?) and have to get it all dragged around the internet as the aftermath played out on FaceBook in a very modern and very public way. So in other words she was putting on a brave face. We all involved setting up the high speed camera and needed someone to stand in as a lighting dummy, When shooter one had the idea to getting someone to shake their hair around... and see how it might look at 2000 fps. Naomi stepped up to the plate and quite shocked us by the force and passion she used to whip. The beguiling result is here... if you look at here closely you can see something else:
Something about that action and the air swishing though her hair just seemed to change her mood, as if she had just tossed away the weight of an the old nightmare, something thick and heavy that had been clinging to her, but suddenly it was gone. As she was hair whipping for the camera, shooter one quietly said to himself:
"Go girl, shake that boy right out of your hair..."

THE INSPIRATION
The initial inspiration was to take graphic pixelated light sequencing and integrate it into a live-action modern dance piece. This ultimately translated into building a unique LED light grid that would serve as the primary light source for the talent below. Immediately, A narrative evolved: a creative soul searches for inspiration as he faces manifestations of his inner ghosts. The LED grid provided a captivating device to parallel the emotion while the dancers ultimately led the viewer through this unforgettable journey.
THE TREATMENT
The Creative Process: Our hero is going through an inner turmoil that manifests in a dramatic interaction with his demons and muses. This is ultimately a personification of the creative process - the dire search for inspiration and the clarity to propel. The three seductresses that descend upon him represent the various stages of his awakening. The first is doubt and indecision - represented by the REAPER. She challenges him and he is eventually is forced into submission as she envelopes him, enabling his insecurity. The second set of seductresses are twin GAZELLES who play a back and forth. They are the conflicting ideas that float in a the head of an artist as he tries to manifest his turmoil into inspired focus. The last seductress is the FIREBALL. She is the spark that lights the fire in the artist to create something beautiful. It is pure passion, a coming together of the artist and his muse.. Throughout this awakening process his clouded vision is purified by the lights above to usher in the physical and mental clarity of his inspired self.
THE LED GRID
LED Grid Build: Faced with the daunting task of building a unique LED light grid, the Black Swan team, along with lighting design team Embrace the Void, took to the skies in lifts to rig 169 LED lights to a grid. Every four to six bulbs were linked to a distro and decoder box that transmitted data to the LEDS corresponding the the lights.
Each Decoder needed to be properly linked, then run through a master box that was wired to an MBOX interface to run original LED sequences created by Munkowitz. The arduous process took two full days to wire properly and set up, but in the end was worth the effort.
LED Grid Illumination: The story, though abstract, is still an emotional one for our hero. In order to translate the movements of the dancers with the lights of the LED grid, original patterns were created by munko to parallel the movements. Over the course of weeks each individual light bulb was programmed, from color to luminosity, to create a visual tapestry that matched both the ebb and flow of the music.
Additionally, it added to the tension and release of the dancers and they explored the space and each other. Essentially LIGHT was the production design for our characters to explore, and their l

DJ Cheeba - Revenge of The Nerd
In 2010, DJ Cheeba's first audio visual mix 'The Reels of Solid Steel' set a new level of progression for DJs. Now in 2011 he returns with the next episode... 'Revenge Of The Nerd'. A quick fire, attention frying, mash of sure fire club hits, stone cold classics, countless acapellas and turntable tricknology, all set to a visual feast of music videos, pop culture cameos, kung fu interludes and cinematic delights. Mixed with incredible flair and imagination, this is another bench mark in contemporary DJ culture. As Cheeba puts it... "It's cut and paste sound and pictures for people with open minds and short attention spans."

Caryl Phillips: o eterno estrangeiro
