Kanwarjit Paintal, better known as Paintal, born in a Sikh family, started off as an Indian comic actor and moved on to teaching the art of acting. He has extensively worked not only in numerous movies but also television.

He lived his early life with his family members in Sadar Bazaar, Delhi. Paintal learnt acting at the Film and Television Institute of India and in 2008 was the Head of the Acting Department of FTII. He came to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1969. His son Hiten Paintal is also an actor, who worked in movies Dil Maange More (2004) and Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). .^[1]

Tina Munim (born on 11 February 1957) is an Indian film actress who had a successful Bollywood career during the late seventies and early eighties. She is married to Anil Ambani. She is involved in a number of philanthropic and charity activities and is currently running an NGO and a hospital.

Early life and background[link]

Munim was born in Mumbai in a Gujarati-speaking family. She belongs to the Svetambara sect of Jainism. Her forefathers were royal merchants in the service of the Burmese kings under British rule.

Career[link]

Munim was discovered by Dev Anand after she represented India at the International Teen Princess contest in Aruba, and won the Miss Photogenic and Miss Bikini awards. Tina aspired to become a Paris-trained couturier and was poised to travel there for her studies in design when approached with a cinematic offer.^{[citation needed]}

In 1978, Dev Anand cast her in his film Des Pardes, which launched her film career. He would repeatedly cast her in several other films with him in the lead role, such as Lootmaar and Man Pasand.

Sunil Dutt launched his son Sanjay Dutt in his film debut Rocky. Tina was chosen as Sanjay's heroine.

Tina Munim fell in love with Rajesh Khanna, when they were paired together in Fiffty Fiffty, Souten, Bewafai, Suraag, Insaaf Main Karoonga and Adhikar and films where she was not heroine of Rajesh like Rajput, Akhir Kyun and Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai.^[1] Khanna formed popular on-screen and off screen pair with Tina in the eighties^[2] but the relation ended when Tina decided to go to California to graduate.^[3] In 1985 Rajesh Khanna turned into a film producer and cast Tina Munim as his female lead in the film Alag Alag.^[4] In 1992, Ram Awatar Agnihotri wrote that it was in the films Alag Alag and Adhikar, both opposite Rajesh Khanna that Tina Munim showed the "first sparks" of the dedicated actress she would become. Tina regards her performance in the film Adhikar as the best performance of her career.^[5]

Apart from Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna, she also made a popular screen team with actor Rishi Kapoor, since they were paired romantically in six films, of which two were hits Subhash Ghai's Karz and Katilon Ke Kaatil. Director Basu Chatterjee repeatedly cast her in his films, such as Baaton Baaton Mein and Man Pasand.

Tina's nephew Karan Shah tried to follow in her footsteps by starring in the teen love story Jawani (1984) opposite Neelam, but Karan's film career fizzled.^[6]

In the year 1987, Munim made the conscious decision to put her Bollywood career on a hiatus. She moved to California and attended college.

Tina Munim had an affair with Rajesh Khanna from 1981-87 but the relation broke off in 1987.^[7] Later Munim married Anil Ambani, brother of Mukesh Ambani, now one of the richest men in the world. She has three children including Zahir and Anshul. Today she is involved in a number of charity, arts, and talent endeavours and hasn't appeared in any film since 1991.^[8]

Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati(Telugu: విజయలక్ష్మి వడ్లపతి), known popularly as Silk Smitha was an Indian film artiste who worked predominantly in the South Indian languages. She entered the film industry as an extra^[1] actress, and first got noticed for her role as "Silk" in the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram. She became a sought-after 'erotic actress' in the 1980s and in a career spanning 17 years, she appeared in over 450 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. On September 23, 1996, she was found dead in her apartment in Chennai, apparently having committed suicide.

Vadlapati Vijayalakshmi was born in a poor family in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. She left school after her fourth standard (in India, at about 8 years of age) due to the family's financial constraints. Her striking looks burdened her with uninvited attention, and her family married her off at a very young age. When she was ill-treated by her husband and in-laws, she ran away to Madras (now known as Chennai) and started living with an aunt.^[2][3]

Vijayalakshmi started as a touch-up artist for a B-grade actor, and soon got a break in small character roles.^[2] Later she was discovered by Tamil director Vinu Chakravarthy at a flour mill. He renamed her Smitha, and took her under his wing: his wife taught her English, and arranged for her to learn dancing from another teacher.^[4] Smitha made her debut in the Malayalam film Inaye Thedi in 1979,^[5] though soon, due to her marked sex appeal, she switched to roles of cabaret dancers and vamps and inevitably found herself type casted.^[2] After garnering much notice and acclaim with her first major role in the Tamil film Vandichakkaram, in 1979, Smitha assumed the screen name "Silk", after her character's name in the movie.^[6][7] However after it became a big hit, she could not escape typecasting, severely limiting her range throughout her career.^[2]

Silk Smitha went on to star in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and a few Hindi films. Her dance numbers, semi-nude scenes and bold performances in films like Moondru Mugam made her the ultimate symbol of sensuality in South Indian cinema. Her item numbers in films like Amaran, Hallimeshtru Kannada were also celebrated at the box office. Some film critics, historians and journalists have referred to her as a "soft porn" actress.^[8] A vast majority of her movies are considered 'softcore' by Indian standards and a common theme is her playing a freakishly strong agent in skimpy bikinis beating up huge thugs. Her acting prowess did not go completely unnoticed and in her rare non-sexual roles, she impressed critics and audiences, such as her portrayal of a wife hurt by her husband's infidelity in Alaigal Oivathillai (1981).^[2] One of her films, Layanam (1989), has earned a cult status in the Indian adult film industry, and was dubbed in numerous languages including, Hindi as Reshma Ki Jawani (2002), which too acquired cult status.^[2][9] Her most respected film is Moondram Pirai by Balu Mahendra, remade in Hindi as Sadma, with much of the top-drawer cast, including Sridevi, Kamal Hassan, and Silk Smitha reprising their roles.^[10]

Such was her audience-drawing power that, at the peak of her career, according to Tamil film historian, Randor Guy, "Films that had lain in cans for years were sold by the simple addition of a Silk Smitha song.”.^[2]

In 1996, Smitha was found dead in her Chennai apartment. In the prior year she had been trying to move her career to become a film producer. Financial problems, a disillusionment in love and an alcohol dependency apparently led to depression. It is suspected that Smitha committed suicide by poisoning herself.

Legacy[link]

In 2011, a biopic on Silk Smitha's life, titled The Dirty Picture, was produced in Hindi by Ekta Kapoor. The movie was directed by Milan Luthria ^[11] and starred Vidya Balan (who later won Best Actress) as Smitha along with Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor. The movie was released on Smitha's birthday on December 2, 2011 and received favourable reviews.^[2][12] The same day, The Times of India published her top 10 movie scenes in its Top 10 videos.^[13]The Dirty Picture's Telugu dubbed version released in theatres across Andhra Pradesh has broken a 25-year record in box office collections (in dubbed films category). Reports suggest that the family of Silk Smitha, on whom the film is based, is not happy with the movie. Silk Smitha's brother V Naga Vara Prasad claimed the film was made without the family's consent.^[14]

Sanjeev Kumar (Hindi: संजीव कुमार; 9 July 1938 – 6 November 1985) was one of the most prominent Indian actors in Bollywood.

Personal life and background[link]

Sanjeev Kumar was born as Haribhai Jariwala in Gujarat to a Gujarati family. His first home was in Surat and family based in Mumbai. A stint in the film school took him to Bollywood, where he eventually became a movie star. He remained a bachelor all his life and died of a massive heart attack in 1985.^[1] He has two younger brothers and a sister.

Sanjeev Kumar made his debut in the film Hum Hindustani in 1960. Sanjeev's first film as a hero was the 1965 Nishan. In 1968, he played opposite the famous actor Dilip Kumar in Sangharsh. In 1970, Khilona made him a star. He went on to star in the hits Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) and Manchali (1973). He started working with the well-known director Gulzar in the early 1970s. He did nine films with Gulzar, including Aandhi (1975), Mausam (1975), Angoor (1981) and Namkeen (1982). Many of his fans believe that these are some of the best films that he did.

He was always ready to take unconventional roles that challenged him as an actor. He played Mirza, a chess-obsessed Lucknowi (citizen of Lucknow), in Satyajit Ray's classic Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977). Perhaps his best-remembered roles were in the blockbuster films Sholay (1975) and Trishul (1978). In Naya Din Nayi Raat (1974) Sanjeev Kumar reprised the nine-role epic performance by Sivaji Ganesan in Navarathiri (1964), which was also previously reprised by Akkineni Nageswara Rao in Navarathri (Telugu; 1966). This film has enhanced his status and reputation as a serious actor in Hindi cinema.

During the early 1980s, Sanjeev Kumar did more supporting roles than playing the lead. In 1980, he starred in a Punjabi movie Fauji Chacha. .

Personal Life[link]

Sanjeev Kumar never married but was involved with actress Sulakshana Pandit, whom he did not marry, having been turned down by Hema Malini, with whom he was in love at the time. Hema Malini went on to marry her frequent co-star Dharmendra.^[2]

In 1985 at the age of 47 Sanjeev Kumar had a massive heart attack, resulting in his death.^[3] Ironically for an actor who played many elderly roles, he did not live to the age of 50.

Ten of his already completed films were released after his death, with his final film Professor Ki Padosan being released in 1993. At the time of his death only three-fourths of this film was complete, and it was decided to alter the story in the second half of the film to explain the absence of Sanjeev Kumar's character
