Michael David Fuller (December 18, 1949 – February 1, 1989), better known under the stage name Blaze Foley, was an American singer-songwriter.
Foley was born Michael David Fuller in Malvern, Arkansas, but grew up in Texas. He performed in a gospel band called The Singing Fuller Family with his mother, brother and sisters. After leaving home, he performed in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and finally Austin, Texas. He was close friends with Townes Van Zandt.
His song "If I Could Only Fly" became a hit in the interpretation of Merle Haggard. His song "Election Day" was covered by Lyle Lovett on his 2003 album My Baby Don't Tolerate and his song "Clay Pigeons" was covered by John Prine on his Grammy Award winning 2005 album Fair and Square. Joe Nichols paid tribute to "If I Could Only Fly" by recording it for his album Real Things released in 2007.
In 1989, Foley was shot in the chest and killed by Carey January, the son of Foley's friend Concho January. Carey January was acquitted of murder in the first degree by reason of self-defense. He and his father presented completely different versions of the shooting at trial.

Clay Pigeons is a 1998 crime-comedy film written by Matt Healy and directed by David Dobkin. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Vince Vaughn, and Janeane Garofalo.
Clay Bidwell is a young man in a small town who witnesses his friend, Earl, kill himself because of the ongoing affair that Clay was having with the man's wife, Amanda. Feeling guilty, Clay now resists the widow when she presses him to continue with their affair as if nothing has happened.
Clay's problems worsen when he inadvertently befriends a serial killer named Lester Long, who murders the nagging widow in an attempt to "help" his "fishing buddy". Clay is horrified, but does not go to the police for fear of his role in his friend's suicide coming to light. But that doesn't matter for the police, as well as for savvy female FBI agent Dale Shelby and her partner Reynard, who see Clay as their prime suspect. Yet Clay doesn't tell them of his "friend," who has confessed his crimes to him.

From 'The Dawg Years" One of the most beautiful songs I ever heard. I have over 100 videos on my channel and no one gets more love than Blaze. If you're interested, I have pasted liner notes below: "When Blaze, who was still Depty Dawg to us, sang at our dining table back in ’76 and ’78, he would be of a temper that was still juicy and ripe from his time in Whitesburg, Ga., when he fell in love with his muse Sybil Rosen, and they had lived in a tree in the woods. To me, these songs you have here are the summary of his time of rediscovering a happy innocence in Sybil’s arms. Our baby son is lovingly included at the table. Here, also, you find his innocent curiosity taking him to the threshold of the Dark World that he was beginning to discover and would soon get lost in. Our portable Uher...
(The alternate opening for the documentary Blaze Foley: Duct Tape Messiah.) In creating the documentary about Blaze Foley, we considered many different openings. A good opening is hard to create, because it has to work hard: set up the theme, establish expectation for what the film is about, build anticipation and set the hook, making the viewer want to watch the rest of the film. Although this particular opening works well, by showing Blaze and establishing him as a quirky character, it's not a good first impression and it's not his best performance. But I love his jokes and banter with the audience, which people tell me was one of the fun parts of his show, his talking with the audience. Movie website at http://www.blazefoleymovie.com

From a public access show in Austin TX. back in the 80's. This is the man that Lucinda Williams is singing about in the song Drunkin Angel. This song was written about Ronald Reagan but works even better today for George Bush. RIP Blaze. Hope there's plenty of duct tape and cold beer where ever you are....................... Segment from the third season of Between the Scenes, a program on Austin public access television that covers the independent film community in central Texas. "The Duct Tape Messiah" was produced and edited by Kevin Triplett and covers the life of Texas songwriter Blaze Foley.
The first time, Blaze was asleep under a pool table. Here, he talks about Townes Van Zandt and the second time he saw Blaze. A great story we filmed for the Blaze Foley documentary.
Deluxe Edition DVD now available -- http://lostartrecords.com/albums/ducttapefilm_de.html Born in a tree house, killed in a friend's living room, 86'd from his own funeral, Blaze Foley is now a bona fide Texas legend. out Blaze's name anywhere in the title. But I think the fact that he changed his name is one of the many mysteries of Blaze. This clip is for Blaze fans who want to know more about his various stage names and is just raw video, it is not from the documentary. This is a good example of an "assembly" -- a collection of clips assembled together into a clip that we studied and then took bits and pieces from to construct the documentary. So this gives a bit of a peek into the process of making a documentary. An assembly is much longer than any scene should be and is only used to guide the editor in selecting the best parts. This assembly is interesting, but it will probably have more meaning once you've seen the film. It shows how there is much more information about Blaze than could ever...

On special interviews, like Mandy's, we would ask to hear a Blaze Foley song. Mandy has been performing Blaze's songs for many years and this is my favorite of hers. While we don't have any of these performances in the movie, I'd like to include them on a DVD special features disc with the artist's kind permission.

Hey Mr. Policeman, please don't take my stuff
It cost me too much money, and it probably ain't enough
To get me through Election Day
Didn't I hear you say
That it's alright, it's alright, it's alright?
Wouldn't even pay a thing, it's hardly worth your time
My luck's been bad, the telephone just kept my only dime
And it might be a burden to me
Why don't you just go and see
If it'll be alright, be alright, be alright?
Hey Mr. Policeman, please don't take my stuff
It cost me too much money, and it probably ain't enough
To get me through Election Day
Didn't I hear you say
