Miguel Altieri: Why is agroecology the solution to hunger and food security?
Public lecture: Food movements, agroecology, and the future of food and farming. Today, a billion people live in hunger. Peak oil and environmental degradation threaten the food security of billions more, particularly with half the world's population living in urban environments where they are dependent on industrially produced and imported food. A transition is urgently needed, but how? What alternative policies can enable communities to realise their own food security in the face of environmental challenges, while also improving livelihoods, building resilience, and conserving ecosystems? Many food-related movements have already emerged around the world, but what ongoing challenges do they face? Miguel Altieri gave this talk at the University of Amersterdam in the Netherlands, on Tuesday 13 December 2011. The event brought together three prominent radical thinkers each with a long background of experience in activism and academic research on transdisplinary but interconnected themes such as conservation, agro-ecology and sustainable farming, political economy and the social sciences: Tony Weis, (Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Western Ontario and author of The Global Food Economy: The Battle for the Future of Farming), who addressed the economic and environmental problems of the dominant chemical-industrial food system; Miguel Altieri (Professor of Agroecology at the University of California, Berkeley and author of Agroecology: The Science of ...

Madagascar - Agroecology
Absorbing 80% of the labour force, agriculture is the mainstay of the Malagasy economy. Today, however, this sector is in peril. Deforestation, unsustainable farming methods, low productivity and insecure land tenure are all fuelling diminishing soil yields and threatening the island's food security. To check this land degradation, the Agence française de développement (AFD) is developing, with support from CIRAD, the use of agroecological techniques with Malagasy farmers. This approach involves protecting the soil with a green cover crop, as a way of avoiding ploughing and restricting the use of fertilisers. This helps to restore soil fertility, limit watershed erosion and reduce CO2 emissions. Developing agroecology is a long-haul undertaking. The key to its success is multi-pronged approach: bolster training schemes, secure land tenure and ensure farmers have access to credit.

Olivier de Schutter: What is agroecological farming? And why should it be upscaled?
Hunger, Food and (Agroecological) Alternatives. Today, a billion people live in hunger. Can we feed the world and achieve economic development while conserving ecosystems and improving the livelihoods of peasants and the rural poor? We talked to Olivier de Schutter (UN Rapporteur for the Right to Food) about hunger, food and agroecological alternatives, during a day-long colloquium at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague, The Netherlands, on Monday 12 December 2011. The event brought together some of the world's leading radical thinkers and activists working on the issues of food and the future of farming. Speakers included Olivier de Schutter, Frances Moore Lappé, Miguel Altieri, Jan Douwe van der Ploeg, Eric Holt-Giménez, Robin Broad and Tony Weis. Presentations addressed the following questions: How do we understand and tackle the interlinked agrarian and environmental crises? What types of policies create sustainable development that guarantees justice, equality and autonomy for poor and marginalized communities? What types of food movements have emerged and why, and with what challenges? Miguel Altieri - Agroecology talk at Cornell April 2009
Dr. Altieri is an internationally recognized pioneer in the field of agroecology. His research program focuses on understanding the role of biodiversity in the control of plant pests. Working extensively with small farmers in Latin America, he has shown that many traditional agricultural practices can serve as models for modern science-based sustainable agriculture. Dr. Altieri has done extensive international development work in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
