A church cantata by German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), with the cantata chorale based on the Lutheran hymn "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" ("Sleepers awake, the voice is calling") by Philipp Nicolai. The text is based on the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13, the reading of which is scheduled for the 27th Sunday after Trinity in the Lutheran lectionary. This cantata was first performed in Leipzig on November 25, 1731. Bach later transcribed the fourth movement chorale for organ (BWV 645) and published it along with the Schübler Chorales.

Wake ye maids! hard, strikes the hour,
The watchman calls high on the tower,
Awake, awake, Jerusalem.
Midnight strikes, hear, hear it sounding,
Loud cries the watch, with call resounding:
Where are ye, o wise virgins, where?
Good cheer, the Bridegroom come,
Arise and take your lamps!

The feast prepare,
So go ye forth to meet Him there.

And Zion's daughter shall rejoice,

But at midnight there was a cry, "Behold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!" Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, "Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out." But the wise answered, saying, "What if there isn't enough for us and you? You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves." While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Some comments about this Cantata.
Bach Cantata BWV 30 has an unusual history. It began life as a secular cantata in honor of a Leipzig town official. It would seem that Bach had in mind from its conception that it would be converted into a cantata. Few of Bach's parody works fit as naturally and well in both of their sets of words. The work begins with an animated and lively chorus. A bass recitative leads us into the dazzling and brilliant aria with strings. The roulades shared by both the strings and the singer are so natural seeming that their difficulty isn't apparent. The high point of the cantata is the haunting and inward aria for alto with flute and strings. The key word here is "grace". Indeed one can hardly think of another Bach aria that so profoundly illustrates a state of grace. The gentle dance rhythms are celestial and heavenly in their inexorable progress. A setting of the chorale Freu dich Sehr ends the first half of the cantata. A bass recitative with oboes introduces the gallant and pointed aria. Stylistically this is the one movement that is typical of Bach's interest in the 1730s with the gallant style. The big rolling arpeggios that accompany the soprano aria not only illustrate the running of the sinner but also the smoke rising from the altars in the tents of Kedar . The opening chorus is repeated at the end of this cantata instead of a chorale.

Esta obra, versión religiosa de la cantata profana "Placentera Wiederau" (BWV 30a) de septiembre de 1737, la destinó Bach a la Fiesta de San Juan Bautista de 1738. El centro de la lectura evangélica es el canto de alabanza de Juan a su padre Zacarías. Esta evocación, tema del libreto, se refleja en el carácter jubiloso de la música.
Observa Alfred Dürr que el Bach de aquellos años no era tan inmune como se supone a las influencias estilísticas de la joven generación. Estas influencias se reflejan en el ritmo sincopado de los coros y en el aria de la contralto de la primera parte ("Venid, pecadores, acudid, hijos de Adán"), en donde una milagrosa melodía pinta el cuadro de la paz ofrecida por el Salvador. También son notorias en el aria del bajo de la segunda parte, poético monólogo en el que Zacarías le promete a Dios "odiar y abandonar todo lo que pueda repugnarle". Y se advierte igualmente en el carácter de danza de la mayor parte de los movimientos. El décimo, por ejemplo, es una jiga donde la soprano, apoyada en las cuerdas, expresa el deseo vehemente de entonar el eterno canto de gratitud al Señor. En la realización de este proyecto religioso, Bach no se siente condicionado por el tema inicialmente profano del texto. Por el contrario, vemos en ello la prueba de que estaba dispuesto, incluso a una edad avanzada, a hacer suyas las particularidades estilísticas de otros cuando le parecieron valiosas y adecuadas para la expresión musical.
