Inside Story - Is the Nobel Peace Prize losing its prestige?
It has been described as the most prestigious award in the world - the Nobel Peace Prize, whose past winners include Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela. But this year's award to the European Union is adding to growing criticism over the choice of winners - and the politics behind the decisions. So, is the Nobel Peace Prize losing its prestige? And is the Nobel Peace Prize still contributing to world peace in the way Alfred Nobel envisioned?

"Radical Idea" Reversed: Author Says Nobel Committee Betrays Founder's Anti-Military Intent
Visit www.democracynow.org for the complete transcript, additional reports on this topic, and more information. Watch the independent, global news hour live weekdays 8-9am ET. For years the Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee has faced criticism over its secrecy and selections, perhaps most notably in 1973 when Henry Kissinger won the award. Leading the critique of the committee has been Norwegian lawyer Fredrik Heffermehl. "Since [the committee is] very devoted to the NATO alliance and to the United States foreign policy," Heffermehl says, "the prize has come to serve the exact opposite of what it was intended to serve ... to support the work for breaking the military tradition and creating global peace or demilitarized global peace order. It's a very radical idea." Heffermehl is past president of Norwegian Peace Council and a member of the board of the International Peace Bureau, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1910. He is author of the book, "The Nobel Peace Prize What Nobel Really Wanted." Before Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, died on Dec. 10, 1896, he wrote in his will that his fortune was to be used to give out annual prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. Heffermehl argues the Norwegian Nobel Committee has illegally ignored Nobel's will. Nobel Prize: Alfred Nobel, the Man P1
Alfred Nobel was born on 21 October 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden into a family of engineers. He was a chemist, engineer, and inventor. In 1895 he purchased the Bofors iron and steel mill, which he converted into a major armaments manufacturer. Nobel amassed a sizeable personal fortune during his lifetime, most of it from his 355 different inventions, of which dynamite is the most famous. In 1888 Alfred had the unpleasant surprise of discovering and reading his own obituary, titled The merchant of death is dead, in a Swedish newspaper. The obituary was eight years premature as it was actually Alfred's brother Ludvig who had died. Nevertheless, Alfred was disappointed with what he read and with how he would be remembered, inspiring him to change his will. On the 10th of December 1896 Alfred Nobel died in his villa in San Remo, Italy at the age of sixty-three after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage. The Nobel Prize (Swedish: Nobelpriset) is an annual, international award originating in Sweden. The award was established in 1895 by the Swedish chemist and inventor of dynamite Alfred Bernhard Nobel. It was first awarded in 1901 for achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. An associated prize, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, was instituted by Sweden's central bank in 1968 and first awarded in 1969. Although the Nobel Prize in Economics is not technically a Nobel Prize, its winners are announced with the Nobel Prize recipients ...

Great Moments in Science and Technology here: www.youtube.com The viewer gains an insight into both the scientific and the socio-political background to an invention or discovery. Pioneers of science are portrayed, and the nature of their research and its further development through to the present are reconstructed. Computer animations are used to make certain processes easier to understand and to show how various systems function. Re-enacted scenes illustrate the conditions under which the scientists worked and the approach they took. Particularly impressive are the historical film sequences, some of which date back to the early days of cinematography.

Muffin Stories - Alfred Nobel | Children's Tales, Stories and Fables
Alfred Nobel Alfred Nobel, founder of the well-known Nobel Prizes, was an excellent student in his childhood. 'That's it. Nitroglycerine!' One day Nobel shouted suddenly during his research. He thought of highly explosive nitroglycerine, which he had heard about from Professor Cynin perviously. Nobel's invention was used at mines and for construction of roads. His father thought highly of Nobel. But nitroglycerine was very dangerous. It exploded when it was managed even a little carelessly. One day Nobel's sister Emil lost her life when a bomb exploded in the laboratory. Nobel was very sad over her death. When the danger of explosives became known, people began to criticize Nobel. "There must not be a factory of such dreadful explosives in the middle of the city." At last Nobel set up a new factory on a ship floating in the middle of a lake. But the accidents of explosion did not cease. Nobel often consulted with his father about problems, but when his father had died of an apoplectic stroke, he was in great distress. 'Ah! What can I do to keep explosives safe?' Nobel continued his researches in his laboratory. At last he successfully invented a new explosive called dynamite. He conducted an open experiment with dynamite in Germany and get its stability and explosive power recognized. Nobel earned a lot of money through dynamite. But he was deeply distressed by the thought that the explosives he had made could be weapons that would kill people. He thought about what was ...
